Title: PS2/Dreamcast games coming to the Playstation Store?
Post by: Topcatyo on September 22, 2009, 01:43:04 PM
So, apparently someone at SEGA has (http://www.gamespot.com/news/blogs/rumor-control/909119209/27046772/ps2-dreamcast-games-coming-to-psn.html) fucked (http://www.destructoid.com/leaked-sega-doc-discusses-ps2-dreamcast-on-ps3-149474.phtml) up (http://gizmodo.com/5364945/playstation-3-motion-controller-slated-for-march-dreamcast-titles-inbound) and accidentally leaked a document explaining certain plans SEGA has.  Some of these plans include putting Dreamcast games (and PS2 games) on the Playstation Store.

Dreamcast games?  Fuck yes!

The Playstation 2 games part is also pretty awesome because a while ago it was revealed that all PS3 systems have backwards compatibility capabilities, but they just didn't bother to make them work.  Then Sony said backwards compatibility (http://www.destructoid.com/sony-backwards-compatibility-will-not-be-returning-145086.phtml) wouldn't be coming back.  Are they going back on their word?  I hope so.

The whole backwards compatibility thing didn't bother me because I got one of the early PS3s that could play PS2 games, but it really sucked for my one friend who bought a couple Playstation 2 games so he could play them on his PS3, only to find out they didn't work.  Maybe now he can play Resi 4, and with PS2 games coming to the Playstation Store maybe now I can finally play Silent Hill 3.

The Dreamcast part is awesome, though.  Let's hope these rumors are true.  I want to play me some Dreamcast games.
And Silent Hill 3.

They are not really going back on their word. Backward compatibility means it is fully compatible with software from previous systems, and being able to download the game doesn't fully qualify. They are doing this to prevent people buying used games. Most PS2 games aren't sold new in stores anymore, so when people (like your friend) want to take advantage of backward compatibility, where do they go? EB, GameStop, etc. So why should Sony give up that money when they can just charge people to download the game instead?

Sure, it's good for people who may not have had a PS2, or didn't buy games for one if they had it. But what about the people that had PS2s and extensive libraries? They either have to keep their PS2 out and hope it doesn't break, or pay for the game again. I was lucky enough to get one of the fully backward compatible PS3s, but I can see some people being pissed at the idea of this.

All Playstation 3's are fully backwards compatible with PS1 games.

I hadn't considered that and, if this is true, those are some nasty business tactics by Sony.

Yeah the PS1 downloads are pretty shit, but I think they'll put a bit more effort into these because there's a higher demand for them and they can probably make more money off of these.

Oh boy now I can play my other games that I have in larger quantity without having to unplug all the cables from the back of my PS3, reaching behind the cabinet my TV is on and unplugging the cables from there, putting the PS3 in some space, bringing out my dusty and possibly broken PS2 from my closet, putting it where my PS3 was, reaching behind my cabinet to plug some stuff in and snaking that up to where my PS2 is!

But in all honesty you don't re-buy your old games to replay them on a smaller screen do you?

I know I'm coming of as pessimistic (at best) and I apologize for it but I just never enjoy when progress is turned into a circle so that money can be made.

If anyone enjoys their handheld console I am glad it brings someone joy.

Huh?  Who said anything about a smaller screen?  If anything, a person playing PS2 games on a PS3 will be playing it on at least a larger screen if there's any different in size at all, considering the PS3 is an HD console and a lot of games (pretty much all the ones I have... bastards) usually have shit you can't see without an HD television.  It's why I never knew how concealed I was in MGS4.

How is progress being turned into a circle?  There are still tons of new games coming out for the PS3, but now you get to play Dreamcast and PS2 games, ones you may not have gotten a chance to play.  You may even be able to catch up on the storyline of a series or something.

Who's talking about handhelds?

Well I was talking about importing old games into handhelds and then having to pay money for them, I am not sure about the system of the PS3 but I guess it works like Xbox arcade and in that case there is no harm.

Simple plut; I'm just opposed when old games are portraid as new and milked.

I fail at this topic and I apologize for my blunt statements.

S'coo, bro.

Also, they're not going to portray the old games as new.  This isn't like that God of War set that's coming out, they're just releasing classics on the Playstation Store.

I really do hope they bring back backwards compatibility.  That'd be nice.

What makes me sad is that they don't use the good parts to it's fullest.

I mean the greatest part in the game in my opinion is when you're going upwards in the circular elevator and there are hordes of enemies spawming and hjumping in BUT, and this is a very important but, they are ALL the kind of enemies that do NOT block nor COUNTER your attacks.

Now I call sham on anyone who goes "But Propaganda, without frustrating mechanics like Block and Counters there is no challange!" That's a big fat lie. Dubble the amount of enemies, dubble the monsters health, make them do dubble as much dammage. Whatever you do, do not give them attacks that stun you nor give them blocking capabilities that break the awesome combat pacing.

The guys with scythes for weapons and the ones that burrow+whirlwind are perfect examples; However they learned from their mistakes since they are not used alot of times in the second compared to the first.

Simple put; I wish they'd have more sequences where you just got to battle a huge horde of enemies, wrecking havoc. As I recall you only did such three times.
However it was still a great game and I'm looking forward to the third.

I was a big fan of the boss battles.  They were so epic that when I played the one my skull grew arms, ripped my head in half and then crawled out of my skin and curb stomped itself.
