Title: xbox 360 red ringed question time yooo
Post by: PirateClock on September 23, 2009, 05:26:03 AM
considering there are like 5 people online i'm just going to post this here and move it once i got the answers i require!

So anyhow my xbox red ringed (again) and im pretty sure my warranty has expired..in which case it's cheaper to just buy a new one. Butttt does anyone have any experience recovering their accounts on a new xbox? And where the fuck can you check what your password was, i logged into that fucker like 3 years ago. Also what about my harddrive? I mean when i buy a new one im probably going for an Elite.. but does that mean i have to pay for all dlc again or how does that work? Or do i have to switch harddrives when i play games with dlc content or something. Save games i don't care for much considering i was planning to play most games over from start regardless.

I got a red ring one time.

I'm not going anywhere with this, I'm just saying I got one once. I also got ringworm when I was a kid.

DLC is stored both on your hard drive AND on the actual console, in the form of a license. So while your hard drive might have the whole game on it, without the license you can only play the game.

You can call their customer support, but the last time I did the lady told me there wasn't a way to switch licenses between consoles. Luckily, I kept digging after she told me that and found a way to. I don't have time to look up exactly where it is, but you should be able to find Microsoft's site for it by searching for license switching or something. Basically you're allowed to do it like once per year, and the web site transfers the license to your new console. It's a bitchin' good time.

I think if you delete dlc you purchased that you can re download it at any time you want without having to pay or something

I'm going to take the opportunity here to ask why the elite is a better choice than the arcade (besides that it looks bitchin in black).

I know there's a harddisk in there, but for what do you use it? To store videos and mp3's in or something? Or is there actual practical use to it?

I was considering buying an xbox so I might as well ask here.

Yes you actually use the HD. I'm currently using 30 GB of my 360's 60GB HD. You use it for updates for games/xbox, DLC, savegames, demos.

So if you need it, how do you do that on the arcade?

If you want to play arcade games, get the arcade. If you want to play AAA titles, I would get the new PS3 Slim or the old 80 gig, depending on if backwards compatibility matters to you or not. Seriously, the Elite has the same HD space as the Slim, but at this point in the game they get almost all the same games and with the Elite you have to pay 50$ a year for XBLGold for the same service you get in the PSN.

Let the fact that I own a PS3 color that argument biased.

No one wants to play PS3, the 360 has better games.

I'm considering getting a new console. Xbox or playstation

Xbox has better games, but the failure rate is terrible. What to do.

Eh, I'll just buy a new gaming PC

I usually play for a LONG time when I sit down to play a game, and that's a source of a bit of my fear. I don't know if you spend hours in a row playing a game from start to finish

Xbox's have over a 50% failure rate, which is fucking terrible.

I like my 360 (which has RRoD'd on me, as well as my friend Aaron's, my brother's, oh, Hell, everyone I know who has a box), but I also like my PS3. I think the libraries match pretty well, and for every good 360 exclusive I say there's an equally good PS3 exclusive (MGS4, Uncharted, Ratchet + Clank, Killzone 2, Resistence, LBP, etc.).

I own both, so I'm not taking sides here, buuut yeah Gears of War is pretty mediocre, and I notice no quality difference between Playstation and 360.

buying a ps3 means you can't wait for the juicy climax of the xbox and you blow your load at the first sign of 1080p and horrible gameplay.

You can redownload any content you have previously purchased off Xbox Live for no charge. Thought for arcade games you will have to be signed on to Xbox Live if you want to play them. This is because all arcade games are saved to that one certain console so anytime you switched consoles any older games will need to be connected to the internet to play. Any games bought with the new console will not require an internet connection.

Get an elite and just transfer all your information to your new harddrive. That's what I did last time my xbox redringed. You can get a free harddrive cable from Microsoft for free to transfer your crap.

I would also like to add as a owner of both a PS3 and a 360. The 360 is superior. Yeah, PSN is free, but they charge you for every single thing possible to make up for it. Pay for a PSN arcade title, pay again to use characters in the game, pay some more for more levels. Bah!

Im not buying a ps3 cause i have 25 360 games and not a working 360 to play it on!

Also ill look into the data transfer thingy! The guy in the store told me there's also a way to let your computer think it's an external hd or something but im not qualified to do stuff like that. I can only press shiny button and plug in the proper cables as long as they are color coded.

Holy shit thankx!

Ok problem solved! Ill just buy an elite, order the free cable, transfer my shit, use the license tool online, done.

Neato, who knew this would be so easy. In a way this isn't such a bad scenario considering my old xbox is 4 years old (or more) and it's HD is full, no HDMI port and still the old dvddrive that's apparently shit.

If you have the harddrive that the DLC is on, all you do is use the site to transfer the license to your new console, and bam.

You don't really need the license to re-download or use DLC on a new console. Once you re-download DLC you can use it no matter what. Licenses only really effect XBLA titles. If you dont have the proper title it will show up as a trial game until you sign into Xbox Live.

Word of caution: Microsoft gives a disclaimer that there may be some problems with using the transfer cable, but from first hand experience all my saved data was transferred successfully without incident. I really enjoy my new Xbox elite now.

Or I would if I didn't have a KICKAZZ gaming pc.
