Title: Watches (the clock on the wrist, you know)
Post by: SpongeClock SquarePants on October 23, 2009, 02:10:48 PM
Hello clockfolk,

Its been ages since i had a watch and i kinda miss it. (plus a watch is the only piece of "jewelry" for men, if you disagree you must leave this thread)
I recently investigated some of the available watches on the market, and i must say i have no clue whatsoever to buy.

What watch(es) do you own? What watches do you like? Do you even like watches? What brands are affordable and still offer good en reliable quality?

At the moment my wishlist is composed of these two:

(but with different colored plate, white that is)

(cool chrono stuff)

This is the watch I have right now:

I've had it for damn near twelve years. It still works great, but I'm going to need a cooler one soon.

Why does this sound kinky to me?

I'm not sure what image people are trying to convey with expensive watches in this day and age when you can get an exacting time piece for $10, but if I met somebody who had a really expensive watch I would just think they're stupid for wasting money like that.

same, except with my iPod.
There was a time when I wanted to get myself a pocket but all the ones that I came across are either too small or have a dumb design on them. Needlessly poncy or just for sissies. There is a watch from one of the wars in our possession that is exactly the kind I would like to have. Solid, durable works and fits in my palm perfectly but that is not a watch to use.

A watch is one of those unique items were the cost and brand make the difference in determining the quality or significance. A Rolex or BOSS carries more weight and clout than say something plastic and or digital.

Quality? Maybe 50 years ago. You can buy a piece of shit and it's going to keep time as well as your nuclear powered diamond crafted uberwatch. The only reason people buy expensive watches is because they actually believe what Clam was using as trollbait a second ago; if something costs more it is automatically better. Even if it's worse and looks like shit, if it costs more it makes you cooler to have it.

On a related note, that is the main business strategy of Apple and the only reason anybody bought an iPhone.

edit: You can still have a nice looking watch that doesn't cost a ton. I'm not saying to go buy a plastic pokemon watch or something, but a rolex is just stupid unless you're a multimillionaire who loves to throw away money on frivolous crap to keep up with the multimillionaire Joneses.

e (to your edit):  A watch, one you plan on keeping, should be of some cost. A good watch can stand the tests of time. Especially if maintainable.

A Rolex or BOSS may be overdoing it but they aren't all that expensive either.

Quote from: GingeraleClock;1683696So, in comparison to something digital and plastic - a ROLEX or BOSS is not better, in the slightest? I never said aesthetics were meaningless, either.

A watch, one you plan on keeping, should be of some cost. A good watch can stand the tests of time. Especially if maintainable.

See my "edit". A rolex is functionally not going to be any better than other more reasonably priced watches in any noticeable way. The differences in actual time keeping are going to be so minute that you'll never notice and if a cheap watch brakes you can get them fixed too, or just replace them if you're REALLY going dirt cheap.

The only major upside is that you have the name brand. That's what you're paying for, really. Not the watch, or the looks, or any of that. You're paying to have the word "rolex" printed on it.

hurp a durp editing over each other
Alright I think it's worth getting a watch that looks nice but I think it's kind of petty to pay through the teeth for name brand stuff that's artificially expensive. That is all.

Nice pocketwatch, where is it from?
Reason I posted mine is because all watches are pretty much redundant due to mobile/other hardware attires which serve the same purpose. So it might aswell be "Watches".

Also have a smaller Breil watch with a metal band and a Seiko watch with a black plate and a metallic band (the Fossil posted above has a dark brown leather band incase you didn't notice) Might take a pic later.

And i agree with clam that people who bitch about people wanted to look good suck. I'm currently doing a masters degree in Communication and Marketing, this means i got to give allot of presentations and act presentable. If i show up with long uncut hair, cheap clothes and a fucking digital casio watch nobody (important) is going to take me seriously. Plus you know, chicks dig expensive shit, i dig chicks, ergo i dig expensive shit.

When you interview, you're selling yourself. You are the product for the employer. If you go and buy something, you don't want something that is obviously a piece of shit and won't be worth the money you put into it. Having a very nice watch, along with a nice suit and fresh haircut, presents you in much better packaging than you are. Because if you're on .cc, you're a piece of shit to begin with. I have a $3000 suit, which sounds stupid expensive and a waste of money. I have yet to not land a job where I interviewed in that suit. Not only does it look good, it gives you added confidence. The amount of money I've made by presenting myself in a professional manner has more than paid for that suit and put plenty in my pocket because of it. I have other suits I wear as well, but I didn't spend more than $400 on those because they're for business meetings that aren't as special. The point is people DO judge you based on how you look, so you should probably look good as to not miss any opportunities.

You can usually get Fossil watches on sale, as long as you stick to something classic you're safe. If you want a watch to stay in style for a while, stay relatively conservative in style and stick with the classics.

I used to have a watch that played "daisy, daisy.." like the HAL-9000 the novelty wore off after a few hours, if I need to know the time I use my phone.

i got it for myself for christmas two years ago because i needed something nicer than normal that didn't put me down more than a hundred bucks, i had a very lengthy watch conversation with clammo that christmas about it i think

and WOW WHAT A SURPRISE i agree with everything clam said in this thread

i don't know what i'd do without a nice watch

I'm a really big fan of Movado watches:

Course' i don't have the extra dough to shell out for one.

I was going to take a shitty webcam picture when I realised I might as well type in the serial number on google and get you a decent pic. This is what I'm currently wearing and I'm really happy with it:

Edit: People saying watches are redundant because cellphones and iPods have a clock built in are like people that say "why have sex when you can just masturbate in a cup".

It's a lot more satisfying to read the time from an actual, analogue thing instead of that eternal LCD screen I spend most of my fucking life staring at.
