Title: Video to Time ratio
Post by: AlbinoClock on December 04, 2009, 09:41:00 AM
The universe is a bit less than 14 billion years old. The motion picture camera is somewhere in its 130s. A massive amount of video is recorded every day. How long until time recorded exceeds actual time?

Well, I know new security cameras are popping up all the time. I don't know where I'd find statistics on anything like that though.

Wouldn't the recording devices be recording the same time? Seeing as there is only 1 time, so the recorded time would never exceed actual time. Someone on the other side of the world would just be recording the same time from a different angle.

he means there is always more then 1 camera rolling so it would exceed the actual time.

If there is a visual recording device for each person in the world, and it has recorded for an average of one year, that would only be around 7 billion years.

I'm pretty sure the amount of porn footage alone would beat 14 billion years.

If that's a reasonable estimate then we're already half-way there and I'm willing to bet that the vast bulk of the video has been produced within the last 5-10 years. So, depending on the acceleration, we could be talking like 3-6 years.

I was thinking this. Between porn, closed circuit cameras, and advertisements I feel like we're well over it already.

Does this also include film that has been destroyed?

THE QUESTION IS TOO VAGUE TO BE ANSWERED

consider how massive the universe is. i guarantee an alien race has done this already.

also if you count all types of records (audio, chat logs, historical records, etc) we're probably already there.

I'm going to interpret the question as "Is the total length of all recorded video longer than how long the universe has existed?"

It's hard to tell because there's no way to know for sure how many cameras are running at any given time. Regardless, I think it's safe to say we'll pass the universe age in at least a decade.

So the answer is either "I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION" or "relatively soon". Ok.

Now, which I suppose I left out.

Those are the only answers that were answers. People said that it depends on the amount of video that's being recorded, which is obvious.

I'm sort of assuming that the few places with a TON of cameras (like banks, government facilities, some rich people's homes, ect) and the large amount of chain stores that have a few cameras (every walmart, most gas stations, most fast food chains) make up for the large amount of people who DON'T ever use recording devices.

Regardless, if you had an infinite lifespan to watch all video sequentially and video-producing races were around forever as well, you would never stop.

I'm not sure what the point of the question is, though. I mean, yeah, there's a lot, but that doesn't have any deep ramnifications or anything.

How would you define "deep ramifications"? Deep is subjective, and keep in mind that this thread was made by an (apparent) discordian.
