think of all that junk data out there failing to lower the net utility of information and then just floating there in digital space indefinitely
You don't need that much space for anything.
Quote from: RibsClock;1713334Google sure does.
Yeah yeah smart guy. I mean one person, what's the point in selling petabyte hard drives to the average Joe? It doesn't even seem that efficient in offices.

got a point, I always considered a terabyte more than i'll need in my lifetime
Quote from: RibsClock;1713327What I think of is generally why in three days Google alone processes enough data to record everything ever written and yet we can't do little things like feed people.
Well it's mostly because all that's required to make google do that is for people to sit in a room typing the right things
World hunger's a bit trickier but ya I completely see your point, it does feel like a priority imbalance

Bill Gates: "I've said some stupid things and some wrong things, but not that. No one involved in computers would ever say that a certain amount of memory is enough for all time."
I'll be seeing you in a few decades when the latest pokemon game takes a terabyte of space to install.
I got my tb hdd last year and i thought id never fill it up. One year later i have expanded to 1,5 tb and have 60gig of free space remaining.

My computer had 8mb of disk space in 1987.

I would be surprised if games increased in size too terribly passed no longer having effective limitations in scope or requiring compression. I feel like we're approaching a point where if games look any better they'll just take too much work to justify it.

All it needs to justify it is a market, which it has. Games are still on screens and don't look flawlessly real, so we've got a long way to go. I will be surprised if there aren't games that require at least a tb in the next 5 years or so.

New technologies are going to spring up that make it much easier to fill up that space with less actual human labor. I'm positive that we'll be seeing action games where the enemies have complete anatomy down to blood veins and organs that'll be made with the help of procedural programs that mimic the function of DNA in building bodies. Just think of how badass a game would be where you can cut a guy in half with a sword at any angle and you'll be able to see a bisection of his insides realistically and have realistic blood spatter and brains oozing. That'd take a lot of data but the people want it!
That's just one example, too. There are many places games these days cut corners that could be improved with more intuitive authoring programs that would eat up space.
Yeah the organ thing is something I've put some thought into, I mean not in the way Thor put it (sick boy) but in a way that if you shoot him in the kidney he dies, if you shoot him in the shoulder he gets to stand up and stuff.

Shooting someone in the kidney alone isn't exactly a deathshot. It would make difficulty harder if you had to shoot directly for the heart, arteries, or brain to get quick kills, and it'd be interesting to allow you to shoot arteries like the femoral.

I'd need to upgrade my entire computer system before I need more than the 1.75 terabytes of hard drive space I have now
I have about a terabyte of space. (320 internal 750 external) and I only have less than 100 gigs left combined. So yeah, a terabyte isn't that hard to fill. I can definitely see needing a petabyte of space in the future with how much more space things take up every year.
Well, I guess I mean death-on-shot kind of killshot, I bet someone could live for a minute or two before death by bloodloss even from a shot like that, and even live if they actually got medical care.

I don't understand how the hell anyone could possible come up with that statistic without completely making it up.
Quote from: Sinister Clock;1713464I don't understand how the hell anyone could possible come up with that statistic without completely making it up.
I imagine they just went to a high number that would be at least somewhat feasible for their statistic. Like, it's probably a ballpark average or something like that.

We can go back and forth like this forever. If we're going to figure this out somebody has to man up and get shot in the kidney. Any volunteers?
My 320GB main drive and 320GB external drive are getting pretty cramped. Between them, I've got 150GB left, and I just know I'm going to hit that ceiling soon. Need to upgrade before long.
1 character = 1 byte
1024 characters in a kilobyte
1048576 characters in a megabyte
1073741824 characters in a gigabyte
1099511627776 characters in a terabyte
1125899910000000 characters in a petabyte
If we assume an average (English) word takes 6 letters:
18764998500000 words in a petabyte
If we assume an average sentence has 16 words:
1172812406250 sentences in a petabyte
If we assume an average paragraph has 5 sentences:
234562481250 paragraphs in a petabyte
If we assume an average page has 5 paragraphs:
46912496250 pages in a petabyte
If we assume an average book has 200 pages:
234562481 books in a petabyte
So 50 petabytes holds about 11,728,124,050 books.
What the hell do you guys store all that space with ?
Quote from: Asshatclock;1713594What the hell do you guys store all that space with ?
Music, art I've done, art I look at from other people for inspiration. Those take up a considerable chunk of space.
Plus my "har har I found these funny pictures on the internets" folder is fairly sizable as well.
I don't have nearly enough music on my harddrive for how much I love it. I guess it's because usually I just go to youtube or something if I want to hear some orchestral stuff.
The original .psd's for my comics and artwork and stuff take up a lot of space because I draw my pictures four times their size and then I shrink them down to the size they're intended to be seen.

This, and it makes my lineart looks extra crisp. For some reason, if I look at a drawing done in Photoshop as is, I can see that the lines are just a tad blurry, and it bothers me. So, it helps to have them be bigger (plus I can go in and really add detail to a picture should I choose to).
Also, I made my own SUPER SPECIAL set of Photoshop brushes to get crisper lines as well.

Yeah, I imagine soon enough we won't even bother with bytes or filesizes. We'll be like "Hey man what's the filesize of the thing you're sending me" and they'll be like "What?"
