And no I don't mean new Sonic games. I'm talking about from day one.
Thing is, tons of people love Sonic. I even think it's fun at times, but I think people by and large are infatuated with it because... I don't know, you play a blue hedgehog who can occasionally do things like run around a loop-di-loop.
I recently played through these games wif ma' ladyfriend who played them a lot as a kid - I consider myself to be a fairly good gamer, and while I was fine playing these games, I felt like the entire time I was getting hurt/killed it was by complete cheap shots. Your typical Sonic enemy is a slow, if not at all moving, possibly I'm a edgy teen critter that's purpose is mostly to just stand in your way while you blaze through the level at super-Sonic (ha!) speeds, which the game and level design fully intend you to do, and then WHAM you run into a bad guy who's just there in the middle of the fucking runway. My problem with Sonic is that I don't know what type of game it wants to be.
Does it want to be a game where you just have fun by running through the levels as fast as possible doing "cool" things like using ziplines and jumping on trampolines? Because if so they should throw less lame, cheap shit in your way that makes you wonder why you're moving so fast in the first place. Plus, while that seems to be the aim of the first few levels, eventually they all just transform into weird labyrinthine stages where the main challenge is the time limit because you can't figure out where the fuck you're supposed to go.
Or maybe the game wants you to move slowly and deliberately. If that's the case, then it fails pretty hard as a platformer. The enemies are, as previously mentioned, I'm a edgy teen and not a problem to kill unless you're blazing at 100mph. But the physics engine is frustrating as fuck when you're walking incredibly slowly uphill and jumping sends you careening backwards.
The point is Sonic blows.
I enjoyed Sonic CD if that matters
In a sense, I agree.
But like the Angry Video Game Nerd you fail to put them in context of how much all games mostly blew at the current time and how Sonic was not a great game, just less worse than most others.
Golden Axe if probably my favorite console game of all time so get that if you can.
A lot of old games suck if you didn't play them back when they were released. So do a lot of cartoons and movies.
I never found sonic fun.

But I mean I played a bit of Sonic back then and I don't think I got it at the time. And through my whole life I've picked up Sonic titles (I have one for GBA) and I've just never really gotten it... And I think only recently have I had the balls to conclude that it's not me, it's Sonic.
I agree. I liked Sonic CD, but never really got into his other old games. Sure, they have nice music, but are riddled with tons of other flaws. Mostly I find them rather boring to be honest.
Oddly enough I enjoyed one of his 3D games, SAB: 2, the most.
some things just don't age well.
This article (http://www.gamesradar.com/f/are-old-school-sonic-and-mario-really-that-good/a-2009120411137418002) looks at that pretty well
I never really got them either. When you got going it seemed like you were just supposed to sit back and enjoy the ride but when you did that something stupid would happen. Running really really fast round loops while also trying to watch out for shit in the way that you can never stop soon enough for isn't very fun.
On top of that, Mario is a much cooler guy than Sonic.
I never was a Sega kid so ummm yeah.

I had a Sega Genesis AND a Super Nintendo. You peasants and your "console wars."

I'd say that there probably weren't fanboys back then but then I realize I'm very probably wrong.

The Sega vs Nintendo thing was the first huge console war. People got in
fights over Mario and Sonic. I sat back and laughed at their petty squabbles.

Because you had experienced both and knew it was Mario.
My neighbour had a sega and every time i would go over there i would play sonic. It was great back then because I was young and stupid. I recently tried it on my xbox and it was a horrible experience. The same goes for most old games, like tombi for the ps1 etc.. Nostalgia is a bitch
I've only ever really enjoyed the first Sonic game and as of now it fucking pisses me off.
sonic R was the worst sonic game IMO, sonic in 3D is fucking gay
Say what you will about old games, but there are tons of NES classics I'll go back to play and love. All Mario games hold up great, along with Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden (albeit some of them being hard as piss). I just... I feel like the more you understand the difference between actual difficulty and cheap, bad level design, you understand that Sonic is bullshit.
Sonic was okay back in the day when it was just about simple 2d linear gameplay with little to no story. Sonic became shit when they tried to take a shitty 2d character into the modern world of gaming and give him some sort of story and horrible 3d gameplay. Plus Sonic has the gayest fanboys ever.

I dunno there's some pretty bad fanbases out there. Sonic is definitely in the top 3-5 though.
Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were amazing and SA1 basically revolutionized 3d gaming at the time since it was a launch title for the dreamcast (September 9th, i believe). Those ones were really well done and had a lot of depth to them. The original games also include an amazing amount of secrets and different unlockables. They are a bit of a pain at times, but most people i've ever met have enjoyed the original series on Genesis immensely.

I though the point of the game was to have quick knee-jerk reactions to sudden danger while going as fast as you can and I had fun playing Sonic and Knuckles but I quit when I got to the hard levels. IDK what all the hate is for, it's a pretty solid platformer. Not the best ever but pretty okay.

That's also an underrated game btw
I share Slurpee's sympathies. Also, the music was kick-ass.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why Sonic 2 was the greatest Sega game of the early nineties.

Deviantart search anything sonic related and there will be porn.
Sonic 2 had my favorite music of pretty much the entire 16 bit era.

You know nothing of the world of Sonichu. This is a good thing, there are some dimensions of reality not meant for mortal minds to comprehend.
Sonichu is really just... Sad or something.
can we just not discuss sonichu
he's really just a horrible person and the people that mess with him are also horrible and the sperging chronicling of everything he's done in the last 15 years is really sickening and shitty and stupid and bad
I agree with Slurpee

I love this song so much. I was so happy when I saw it in Sonic Advance, you get to fight a bunch of classic bosses at that part.

Fine with me, nobody ever shuts up about it on the other forums I go to so I'm a tad sick of the whole thing. Plus I feel bad for him in spite of all his glaring faults.
[U2]xm2mjHHVM8k[/U2]
Not to say Sonic 3 and Knuckles didn't have it's own share of great songs.

It's like no one ever told him that it's not an acceptable way to live. It's really a a shame.
I still find the fact that people like that actually exist hilarious though.
Hey flounderman, did you know that Micheal Jackson helped make the soundtrack for Sonic 2?
He didn't have himself put in the credits because he was unhappy with how the limited power of the sound chips in the system distorted his music.
Also, sweet avatar buttplug
I thought that was for Sonic 3?
Quote from: Brak's Dad;1716282I thought that was for Sonic 3?

Yeah, but Mich
ael Jackson didn't.
Hoho!
It was actually Sonic 3.
I have to say, back in the early nineties we didn't get very many games, Sonic 2 was my only Sonic game, so that's mostly why I focused on Sonic 2 songs.
E:Also: I've only vaguely heard of this Sonichu person recently and I really am glad that's so.
in the early nineties i had a snes and a bunch of games from hong kong
In the early ninties I was being born.

I read some of his Encyclopedia Dramatica page and it was really just sad. I felt really bad for him. Isn't he disabled anyway? I don't see the sport in picking on a disabled person.

This has been floating around for a while now, I'm not sure how true it is. There are a bunch of song comparions on youtube though which seem to suggest it's true.
I read that sonichu guy's page and whoah man, is that guy for real ?
Slurpee gon ban yall fer talkin bout da c dubya c
since apparently not everybody's familiar, christian weston chandler, the creator of sonichu, is a real person, and he's autistic. peripheral to that, he's also a self-centered racist sexist homophobic pathological liar with wild delusions of grandeur.
he's like a stupid mean old dog that's dying of cancer that the internet thinks it's funny to poke because when you do it he growls and shits himself. they've been picking on him for three years, and since he's autistic and self-deluded, he continues to make a more and more ridiculous spectacle of himself while apparently convinced that there's something else entirely going on.
there's no positive side to the subject at all. he's unpleasant, they're unpleasant, and every prospective future for either of them is equally mired in unpleasantness. it's just a sad fucked up subject and the situation's not going to get any better. which is why I'd rather we not linger on it.
can we please agree that I've just said all there is that needs to be said about sonichu and stop talking about pretty please with sugar on top ffs
CWC thinks a black man in a pickle costume is e-stalking him
