Title: Mass Effect 2
Post by: SwirlberryClock on January 23, 2010, 10:35:26 AM
Yeah, so this game looks incredible. I loved the original and this one looks way better. IGN agrees too, they gave it a 9.6. Here's their review:

So is anybody else pretty pumped for this? I wasn't planning to buy it on Tuesday, but now I have to.

I pre ordered the collectors edition and I'm starting a new character in Mass Effect 1 now to make all the right decisions so my Mass Effect 2 experience will be the best.

Yeah. It's great how it does a cross-over like that between your ME1 and ME2 character.

Also, PC owners of the game, you can download save files from people that have already completed the game if you don't wish to start new on ME2.

If you start a new game without importing a save file from ME you will still get to make the big choices like if Wrex is still alive etc. Do your research noob. I think they actually said that in the link in the OP...

Reading that article, I'm kind of frustrated that they got rid of the planet exploring. I found that to be lots of fun.

Some yeah, not the major ones like Wrex/Ashley/Kaidan dying. If you import someone else's save it would be the same as having the game decide only you won't get to choose who lived etc.

If you look at the page I liked to they give many different save games with male paragon/ renegade, female paragon/ renegade, and then go into description on who they saved, who they killed, and other important choices they made. That was the entire reason I thought it would be worth linking to.

I have 3 level 60s ready to go.

lvl 60 Biotic Paragon
lvl 60 Vanguard (neutral choices/basically what I'd really do in that situation)
lvl 60 Infiltrator Renegade

I played ME1 so damn much... I've been dying for this sequel for the past 2 years. I cant fucking wait!!!!

Also why the fuck did IGN have to spoil punching the reporter in the face pt2.. I didnt need to know that she was gonna come back... I've been trying to skip out on any and every spoiler I possibly can and then I watch that review and bam, a spoiler. Albeit a very minor one...

Mass Effect = Win
Star Trek = Nice

I would not try to compare them since I have not experienced Star Trek to the point of obtaining a full fledged view of their universe, but I have with Mass Effect and I loved it.

Waiting for this game of the year to come out and rape the competition.

Eh, dont even bother with the newest dlc (cant remember what its called but its awful. Cerberus station maybe? iunno its something like that..)

Bring Down the Sky isnt too terrible but its also nothing special.. I'd check it out if you REALLY need some new content... Otherwise just wait for ME2.

Well Bioware is a bunch of dicks. They made it so every file without an extension launches Mass Effect 2 and due to Windows being shitty with restricting you from doing things to your computer, I can't seem to change it back. I tried altering the registry but I haven't restarted yet.

Also scanning for resources is boring as fuck. Literally pixel hunting with no visual clues. This kind of thing was unbearable 20 years ago, so why haven't they learnt? I ended up just using cheat engine to get all my resources to like 1,000,000. For some reason the memory locations pretty much constantly change all the time.

Can someone tell me what happens when you run out of fuel?

This is what console players actually think.

OK to elaborate the controls for the PC mako were not butt-fucking terrible like they were for the 360 and it handled much better. I played about halfway through the 360 version of ME and all the way through the PC version by the way.

You could provide a well-constructed counterpoint to my argument but why do that when you can just call me a gaynoob since that is clearly the best way to win arguments with unenlightened people such as myself.

Ok so 2 hours in so far, just got done talking to the illusive man or whatever. Martin sheen is my hero and the illusive man is probably the best new character so far.

Everything feels alot more polished then it was in the first and I actually like the new ammo system. I thought itd piss me off but its actually rather decent. The guns project a little holographic icon that allows you to view what specific type of ammo you're using and the character transfer has been really well done so far. Lots of references to ME1 and a great continuation of the story.. So far..

My biggest gripe before the game came out was that they were going to get rid of all the great squad members from the first.. They did do this but in a very interesting and plausible fashion. I'm still looking forward to seeing whats happened to them however..

Something tells me im going to be playing this for a looooong time.

Also I'm pretty sure Miranda wants my space cock.

started playing again aswell, it's actually better than i remembered TBH. I mostly remembered the bad parts such as the shitty controls, autosave not saving often enough (had to redo Feros cause i drove my I'm a edgy teen car of the bridge due to shitty controls) and repetitive side quests. But everything else is actually really really good. This has made me more hyped about ME2, although i get a bigger boner for Bioshock 2, which IMO was the best FPS since HL2.

ME2 sidequests are really really impressing me at this point. Compared to the side quests of the original this is like ME2 plus an expansion in terms of content.

I'm reading complaints about RPG elements not being as strong as they were in the original. I find this true but I dont seem to care.. The game is shitballs fun.

Here's hoping the DLC is just as good.

It's Mass Effect 2 day in Sweden.

What I do fear is that the lack of Mako and space exploration will make me sad... I loved the concept of lonely exploring a planet, treading it's untouched grounds. The freedome and loneliness but most of all serenity that could only be achieved by the grandness of space.

It will probably be a great game. Will see what I think later.

And whats this about no loot?

Theres loot but not the way it was in ME1. You do find new guns along the way but alot slower then in the first. You also find new upgrades and resources to produce new weapons in each location you visit.

You wont care too much. Trust me. If you played the first as much as me, it'll take a bit to get used to it however..

People are dropping F-bombs in ME2 hehehe! I don't understand the new weapon system or powers system yet though. I'm sure it will start to make sense when I play longer. Everything else is better than in ME1 so far though.

The new cover system also has gotten me killed more than it's saved me.

Ok I'm guessing I'm either the most refined or most I'm a edgy teen gamer ever but I do not find this to be an immense uppgrade from Mass Effect 1 at the moment.

Yes the overall feeling is way more polished.
But I do miss Mako exploring (probing planets feels like a flashgame and a waste of my time)
I miss real loot (no real feeling of accomplishment at most times or when shopping)
I hate the new leveling system (you gain a level after each mission.)

Only played about 3-4 hours so things might get better but I still don't see a reason on why to make this game a shooter...
It feels more like a shooter with RPG elements than an RPG with shooter combat.

I do agree with this but honestly, I'm having fun with the game and that's all that really matters at this point. I never really played  ME for the micro managing and loot searching and shit.. I'm never going to miss having to turn half my inventory into omni-gel just because i've found 34098394038 stilleto IV pistols.

I dont see why people are complaining about the lack of exploration in this one. Yeah you cant drop down in the mako and drive on random planets anymore... But all those planets were rather bleak and dull to begin with. Not to mention all the copy/pasting they did with the side quests, Salarian medallions, turian insignias, break apart this satellite wreckage and find a pistol you've had for half the game...

eh... I'm glad they got rid of all that shit.

The side missions are definitely a step up from ME1. These ones have more weight and actually story on them, making it worth while to go out and do them, as well as having some decent "loot". This new "loot" system is kind of odd and hard to get used to. Call me weird, but I like the probing game. Maybe it's because I thought the Mako was the worst element of ME1.

I kind of like it since that is what makes an RPG. Right now I feel no sentimentallity towards my gear, weapons or armour.
The cheer prospect of having to grind (grinding in singleplayer games is always hugely I'm a edgy teen) resources to buy uppgrades for everything just makes me a sad panda.

Also they pretty much removed half the skills of the leveling system and replaced it with a very weak one which I disaprove of.

It's still a great game but I think Mass Effect 1 was a better game for its time than Mass Effect 2 is. Though I have not finished the game yet so the nerd ranting will probably continue.

Well I am biased since I am a huge lover of the grandness of space, see we call it SPACE because it's pretty godamn empty not because there is Salarian pirates behind every godamn rock.
I found it canon, finding 1 corpse and 3 probes on one planet was great fun for me. I admit everyone might not be like I am but that is how I felt.
HOWEVER! My friend watched me play and agreed that Mako might've been empty and boring as fuck for most people... but scanning for resources is a step backwards. It's the same godamn idea of wasting time and you can't even shoot things.

I'm about 28 hours in right now and I'm finding loot all over the place. Most of the time its just resources and credits but I'm finding upgrades and new pieces of armor pretty regularly.

Also how the hell do I view dammage difference inbetween weapons?
It's aggrivating not to, alot of numbers that are just lost in space here... "20% more weapon dammage" yeah but what the hell is my weapon dammage?

Also, do you really have to travel back and forth inbetween the Mass Relay solar system and the others to probe their planets? Seeming as you need atleast 15 probes on some planets and you can't buy new ones unless it's in the Mass Relay solar system... If there is no uppgrade or feature to remove this later I'll go mad.

However the first one is one of the best games I've ever played with a great storyline that you'll miss if you play ME2 first. So I suggest playing the first one before playing the second one.

Quote from: DWARFINATOR;1723553I like the new skills. Especially shock wave. It great to see everyone just getting blasted away.
I find being a full mage to be quite weak and envoirmental-dependant, like when I went to get the Krogan I was throwing people of ledges everywere but on the ground every second enemy has shields and whatnot making most of my spells worthless.
I like the challange, it's just silly that I know how playing a soldier and just having soldiers in the party would steamroll the levels.

Quote from: DWARFINATOR;1723553When a character becomes loyal to you you unlock an extra outfit for them.

Thanks

You would be selling yourself short if you don't play the first one first.

That being said I just beat ME2 and I'm starting a new character. Female adept renegade on insanity. Yep this is gonna be hard.

Iunno, influence systems make you "grind" friendship with certain allies but the current system of letting you do whatever you want with them aslong as you accept their mission is quite one dimensionall...

I like the story missions alot and Mordin is an epic character. Still hate the scanning and wish they'd choosen a better solution.
Also what idiot game developer makes a Solar Systems with only 1 planet what does not have any side missions on it? I mean, if the system is already mapped and the planet has already been explored or noted as godamn "uninteresting" why the fuck would Shepard travel there just to scan a "Poor" quality planet for what meagre resources there is?
Yeah I'm nitpicking but it has happend like three times... paying for fuel just to go and probe 1 shitty planet is not progress.

Also the lack of ammo types in contrast to the first game makes me sad; Why the fuck would you ever go backwards and remove content? So far only seen melt, ice and fire effects. Miss the radioactive/acid/posion/fusion types of melting etc.

Still enjoying it though

You're nitpicking so damn much its intolerable. Everything has been streamlined. Thus you dont have to micro manage ammo, weapons, armor, upgrades, etc etc etc. These are the things bioware received a lot of flack on because it was, for the most part, tedious and annoying.

And btw, they didnt exactly get rid of the micromanaging all together. You still choose different armors, ammos, upgrades, and weapons. Its just alot quicker and more convenient. ME2 has about 10x more content then ME1 ever had so i'm having a hard time seeing how this is a bad thing at all.

They rehashed enough things from ME1. They dont/shouldnt have to rehash everything. Ask yourself, "Am I having fun?".

I can probably guess the answer. Besides, if you really miss all that shit from the first game so damn much, go back and play ME1. ME2 has actually made me want to go back to ME1 just to redo a few things here and there... Even though I have 3 different lvl 60's to choose from, the possibilities are endless. Plus I never ever killed off Wrex and I kinda want too now just to see what happens in ME2.

If you find choice to be annoying then I guess you could say yes, I find it lacking and dull to only have flame, cryo and plasma ammo types.

No see there is still not alot of ammo types, weapons seem to be an obvious choice of uppgrading or just keeping with the old and bad. I might be wrong but I DON'T KNOW BECAUSE THEY DON'T WRITE OUT THE STATS OF THE WEAPONS.
I'm 18 hours in and I find a huge lack of micromanaging :( I only choose my armour based on what I want to look like because even though I'm a mage and playing on hard it's easy if you just stand behind boxes every third second (albiet this is not a bad thing, it's a good thing. Though the cover system is not good imo.)

Not being able to customize your teammates is not defendable in an RPG, it's pure bullshit plain and simple.
If you present the game as a shooter then it is OK. But present it as an RPG and I expect godamned RPG elements like depth when talking to my teammates or the option to custimize them.
Also I'm not angry at you at all just the game and what I felt was promised but not presented. Also I'm unsober.
Quote from: Illusive Man;1723705They rehashed enough things from ME1. They dont/shouldnt have to rehash everything. Ask yourself, "Am I having fun?".

Killing Wrex does not seem to change anything expect the text. Yeah his brother says Wrex was more for blablabla and he's more for blablabla but it won't effect what you do in the base other than some few dialogues.

If you looked at the weapon description you would see something like [This weapon is an upgrade of ] That's how you know what weapon is better. It also tells you which weapon is better for taking out armor/barriers/shields.

But I'm talking about ways to melt their corpses :( Piercing ammo or whatnot doesn't do that. I just don't understand why they removed some of the melt features.

Yeah but then my point is furthured by the fact that there IS no micromanaging since units change their weapons to the newest per automatic and thus there is no real gear progression to speak of other than the better choice; Making it be no choice at all since anything but the newest and better would be redundant.

Quote from: DWARFINATOR;1724039Right. Start from level 1 on insanity with an adept, I can assure you that it isn't easy at all.

I really like how they've evolved Tali and Mordin, I don't know about Subject Zero... maybe because I said it was all about sex at the start she won't open up to me or something... Not like it feels as if its a big loss but still kind of dull.

Oh and Grunt is cool aswell, he actually feels like he's evolving etc.
Man I wish they had half the character progression in Avatar as the characters in Mass Effect.
There is less talking to be had with the characters compared to the first game but the talking does feel as if it is pushing the character forward which is nice.

Still kind of hard at times to roleplay Renegade, "Shoot the man! Shoot the wife! Shoot the children! Shoot the dog!" And apperently it was the worlds most evil dog and as such you gain 4 paragorn. Choosing Bastion instead of Nemesis as my final skill adds enough Paragorn to remove 1/3 of my scarring even though my renegade goes up much higher... meh.

How many of you finished the game yet?

How many of you think that was the stupidest finale mission you have ever be through?

Really? A 50-story terminator torso? That shoots lasers out of its chest? That you can easily beat by taking cover and popping out to shoot it ever minute? What the hell happened?!

Or the fact that the final mission is just two phases of "choose-people-for-tasks-and-hope-they-do-not-die-randomly" with the only influential factors to mission success being "loyalty" which doesn't really show up in the game as more of a "are they gonna die or not" and the ship upgrades?

I actually thought the Human reaper was a stupid idea at first aswell. After reading some things on it about the internet I guess its really not that bad of an idea after all. If there's a human reaper chances are there's reapers for every advanced space faring species that ever existed.. Theres a whole thread about it on Biowares forums. Go check it out its interesting.

I do agree that the final mission was kinda eh.. I mean it had its moments but I'll take the final mission from ME1 over ME2 any day. That Prothean city was just too cool.

Another thing to note is that the protheans may or may not be extinct. I'm assuming they are now but I think Bioware is leaving the door open to the possibility. When Harbinger releases control of the collectors the Prothean seems to regain conciousness before quickly being blown up. I was like oh cool the protheans arent completely gone after all and then BAM they're all dead again.

And on another note, Saren was an even lamer boss then the giant human reaper. Saren was probably more interesting but all he did was climb around like a geth or float around on his hover board.. Both fights were pretty lame to be honest.

Hopefully ME3 ties everything together nicely and puts everything into better perspective. In the meantime I need to go through this on Insanity and choose renegade on everything.

Way to fast main story progression :( 4 main story quests or something

Love some of the characters though, but the hidden mechanics kind of ruin character progression (saying you want to have sex with Subject zero just for the sex, hasn't talked to me since.)

The scaling mechanic with renegade/paragorn is immensly I'm a edgy teen.

Still withold that the loot system and uppgrade system is a huge downturn and even though I like how some characters are more fleshed out, they are much linier. You can say what you want to them without reprecusion aslong as you do their loyalty quest and don't say "no" to sex. Shops/city exploration feels somewhat redundant due lack of loot.

And scanning. I withold that removing the mako for scanning sucks and the missions I find are way to godamn short. I've had three 3-5 minute quests (they're timed).

A great game but ME1 was better for it's time.

Hmmm true, although it is optional to recruit some, my friend completed it in 7 hours, skipping everything uneccery. I played it for 44 hours.

I don't mind if the levels were copy paste in ME1 atleast there was some conversation or feeling of some achievement, I got the choice to destroy a city/factory and neither gave me paragorn/renegade or a responce from any character.
One mission was killing 3 mechs who stood right there at the spawn. Sure the envoirment was spectacular but that was the only thing about it.
Quote from: DWARFINATOR;1727283Also Kelly warned you not to tell Jack that you want to fuck her, I guess you should have played the game better if you wanted to be able to talk to Jack more.
I get burning bridges, but back in the day it took more than 1-2 answers.
It was just, iunno, hollow, to not be able to atleast hear some of her stories etc afterwards.
Same with garrus, had like 1-2 talks with him after his quest.

Grunt had great, Tali had great, Morith/Samara has some interesting stuff as does Legion.

I loved Legion.

Anyway just finished, it was nice. Though with that many ships why don't they just rape the galaxy.
Also I feel sad for the Prothean king :(

See this is why I can give Half Life 2 huge street credit.

It might've kept us waiting for long, so long, to long.
BUT! They did not compromise, they released a game that probably had everything they ever planned to include or found fitting.

Mass Effect 1 felt like that somewhat apart from the copy paste dungeons (but spending so much time making custom dungeons for a first time game would've been a to big a risk.)

Mass Effect 2 does not feel like that.
Scanning is obviously a last resort when they didn't have time to input the Hammerhead MAKO (which preordering description says would've been available at release) and the lacking loot system (3 helmets, apart from the preorder ones).
Which is somewhat sad since they could've polished this game much more than the first one could've (was).

Hope they really take time to make the third installment what it should be.

Infiltrator is probably the best class for Insanity as you can go vis in a tight spot plus the sniper specialty and incinerate. I hear Soldier is good too.

Overload and warp are pretty handy as well. Keep your head down and watch out for the giant security mechs and their rockets.. They can still hit even if you're in cover, which is bullshit, but whatever.

The soldier can use any weapon which means you have yourself covered in most situations, It helps if you can get the research which allows you to use a biotic/tech power with it. Hardened adrenaline rush also severely helped me, after dying so many times from a random enemy I hadn't quite killed, that helped quite a lot to stop the damage and shoot them a few times.

I think soldier is worthless in Insane, can't fire behind walls, no shields and no tanking abilities.

If you have a cerberus network code that comes with the game all the DLC is free. If your copy doesn't come with a copy then a cerberus code costs like 1200 points.

On the subject of DLC. Zaeed rules. No faggy backstory, just help him kill a dude and then he shuts the fuck up and does his job for the rest of the game.

He is pretty talkative when killing dudes though. His loyalty power is pretty powerful btw. And from what I've read not all DLC will be free.

They'll probably start charging for stuff they didnt have planned for the original game. Like a new "Bring down the sky" or something gay like that.

All the DLC they've released so far shouldve just been in the original game.

There still seems to be an open spot for an extra recruitable character, I hope they don't plan on charging for that.

Now all that is left is to wait for ME3.
If they mimic the Halo series in anyway ME3 will be way to short and unsatesfying but I really hope they stuff it full with content and most of all lore.

I find myself lacking huge amounts of Lore in the second one, no big revelations (apart from Collector/Prothean and the thought that all Reapers might be the result from a harvested species.) and yeah those are actually big but they were not presented in a awe inspiring way.

The prothean AI left in the prothean city in ME1 was really epic and foreboding, the talk with Sovereign aswell.
Me2 was more like an action movie.

Zaeed is kind of dull IMO though. Hard to understand why he's really helping you or even to care why (credits I know but still)

No I like it, but loving the concept of it and wishing it to be all that it can be is better than blind acceptance of its flaws and only pointing to its pros. I could do that but I'd rather talk about what should've been improved.

Oh and did you guys try and kill all your teammates and yourself in the final mission?
Actually the most powerfull ending.

Also Garrus/Tali romance are superbly done. Poor Garrus :(

There is no such thing as a flawless video game. Even pong had a flaw. It got boring quickly.

It's on Pc and 360 actually.  Plus you are obviously trolling, continue to do so and you'll have some more time to play flawed games.

I was just joking. But anyway, from what I've played at other peoples houses, Mass Effect 2 is a pretty cool game.

The story is a definite improvement.

When I heard about the second one coming out I bought the first.  I loved KOTOR and I'm liking Dragon Age from what I've played so far so I figured I'd like it.  I honestly didn't.  The whole Sci-Fi RPG thing didn't appeal to me as much as I thought.  I may rent the second to give it a second chance, but I found the first one frustrating and repetitive.

just played trough the Firewalker free dlc, I like the hammerhead allot. Controls remind me of the Manta in UT3 and 4.  Huge improvement over the Mako.

Also got Thane, Jack and Garrus some new kick ass outfits.

Also next week the second DLC character will be released (first being Zaeed) only she won't be free.
