Title: Retro Game Begin
Post by: Topcatyo on January 23, 2010, 12:25:32 PM
So I haven't really told the forum this yet, but I've been working on two albums simultaneously.  I do the one album when I get bored of working on the other...

The other album I'll keep secret for now, but I have been working on one I call Retro Game Begin.  The album will consist of around 58 songs (I'm not expecting to finish this any time soon...) and will be the soundtrack for a game that doesn't actually exist.  So it's technically a fake soundtrack.

The music will be made only with the sounds NES used to make songs for their games (though I took liberties with how any tracks I was able to put on at once.  That is, I said "fuck only having three tracks I'm doing as many as I want).  That's why I can switch between these two albums to ease boredom, as the other one is not old chiptune songs, so the whole process is very different.

My plan is to make torrents of the albums when I'm done and then put them on some bigass torrent websites, seed them for a long-ass time, and then see what happens.  I'm not really planning to make money from these, they're are just for fun.  The torrent file will also include images I'll draw up especially for the album.  Every song will have its own picture, and I'll even pepper extra artwork in there just for the hell of it.

ANYWAY THAT'S ENOUGH EXPOSITION

I figure I'll use this thread to post a song or two when they get made.  Posts will be sporadic because, hey, I don't make a song every day.

However, I did make both these songs in the last three days.  These are not the final songs, though they are pretty damn close.  As work continues on the album I'll keep modifying every song as I think of new things in the work that need to be fixed.

Start Screen (http://www.zshare.net/audio/71591856d71595f2/)
(Starts loudly abruptly, be ready).

This song is one of my favorite works from this whole thing I've made so far.  I really had no idea what to do after I did the first little bit in the beginning so I sat on it for several months.  I came back to it a couple of days ago and found I still didn't know what to do.  Then, the next day at around 8 o'clock when I was extremely bored, I watched a movie and, immediately afterward, I went to town on this thing and got most of it done.  The next day I worked on it for a long time and finally got it finished.  In the end, I'm very happy with how it came out.  The ending needs some fixing, I'll do that sometime.

I'll put up the artwork for this song when I get it finished.

The other song, which I made entirely last night from 2 AM to 3 AM:

Nightmare 1 (http://www.zshare.net/audio/71592806ae157fac/)

This one I made last night at around 2 AM.  I had just gotten back from playing NERF with my friends only to find that a fellow student of my school go the shit beat out of him (he's fine, no worry) by a complete stranger.  That didn't influence this song, but I thought it'd make an interesting story.
Anyway, so I worked on this from 2 AM until around 3 AM, and I think for the most part it's done.  I may very well add more to this song.  Either way, I'm also very happy with how this came out.
Parts of it sound ugly and indecipherable on purpose.  In fact, the whole thing was meant to sound like that since it's supposed to be part of a nightmare sequence in the "game", but then I ended up with this which I found to be so much cooler.

This goes without saying and I trust this really doesn't need to be said, but don't steal this shit, yo.

Topcat this is such a fucking cool idea

Can't wait to hear the inevitable Boss Fight music. remember to make Bonus Stage musica fucking crazy and sound tropically themed.

Haha I can vividly picture the games the game the songs go along to. I imagine Nightmare starting with the room shaking and a giant monster/robot stepping on screen.

Just started listening to Start Screen. It's great, makes me feel sad that there isn't actually going to be a game to play this to.

Thanks a bunch :D
Well, what you're picturing is not far off from the image that's going to go with the song, so that's make me really glad and tingly :D

Yeah, Fruity Loops.  Zen Micro Clock pointed me toward a plugin that I use to make all these instruments.  Before that I was just using knock-off sounds.

Updating because I finished a new song last night.

I think I may have gone overboard with this one, it wasn't really supposed to end up sounding so grandoise or fancy.  Whatever, I like it.

Listening to Start Screen. Pretty sweet stuff you got going here.
Care to point me in the direction of that plug-in for FLStudio you were talking about?

You know who else makes music that sounds like it would be good in a video game? Digital Lemon Clock (http://www.clockcrew.cc/talk/showthread.php?t=87396), it would be totally rad if you got him in on this too.

Imagining the soundtrack to a radically original video game is a pretty effective premise and pretense for writing music, I find.
