Since the old thread was deleted. I've got three badges now and I'm about to catch myself a sudowoodo, I love that thing.

I pretty much finished it already, all I have to do is catch a couple of legendaries and defeat Red, and perhaps raise a team for the battle frontier, I was thinking of Snorlax or slaking, Shuckle and some special sweeper.

Also I just want to say that Parasect is and awesome pokemon for catching other pokemon, so you might be interested in getting one.

The only Pokemon I've been training are Typlosion, Ampheros, Togetic, Ariados, Parasect, Manectric, Weavile, shuckle and Butterfree.

I've also trained Gyrados a little even though it's main role is HM slave, despite that it helped out in the E4.

A Pokemon with Compound Eyes and Thief is great, I just got 2 Lucky Eggs.

Oh mannn I hate buying remakes of games I already own, but I fucking love Gold and Silver. I might have to pick up a copy. Is Kanto significantly improved?

Plus my save battery in Silver is dead and I'm too lazy to replace it D:

I hate how much these games depend on luck though.
Streaks of getting hit by yourself due to confusion are way too common, causing you to lose even though the battle would normally be a sure win for you.

Catching legendaries can be a pain too, you can maximize your chances of catching them but may still end up using over 30 ultra balls.

Rollout can be bothersome, but when it fails a turn it'll lose it's power, so you can consider to paralyze the opponent or put it to sleep.
Making it lose it's accuracy works fine too or just choose a Pokemon which resists Rollout, like Geodude or Onix

I assume you're talking about Whitney's Miltank so it's also a good idea to use female pokemon, putting it to sleep also prevents it from using Milkdrink.

Yeah, you can trade a Drowzee for a Machop, Why would you want to trade an Abra for a Machop anyway?
Abra gets much stronger and is much harder to catch.
Drowsee for Machop is a fine trade though.

To my use able Pokemon I've added Snorlax, another Shuckle, Gardevoir, Gallade, Umbreon, Dragonite, Shiftree, Blissey and Absol.

I also finally got my Togetic to evolve

I've also managed to get a shiny Goldeen and Dodrio

Soul Silver. Got it a few days ago. Named my dude Ammat-2 (Ammat II took up too many spaces), because my FireRed dude was named Ammat. Just beat Faulkner, my Cyndaquil evolved into a Quilava, and got the egg. Also I caught a super cool Weedle, named it Lagann. I'm going to raise it into a Beedrill, of course. Got an Ekans, named it Jormungand, and soon I'm gonna catch a Slowpoke I can name Mr.Slow

I got Soul silver a while ago.
My active team consists of
Ninetails, Honchcrow, Lickylicky, Tangrowth, Yanmega and Garchomp.

So yeah, I choose a team of pokemon which was pretty much useless before they got their new evolutions.
Ninetails is in there just because it's a neat pokemon and I hadn't had the chance to use Garchomp in any of the previous games.

Exeggutor - Yggdrasil
Gyarados - Jörmungandr
Houndoom - Fenrir
Magnezone - Mjolnir
Alakazam/gengar - Loki
Abomasnow - Ymir

Thor isn't on the team because I'm the trainer.

I don't see any glaring weaknesses in this team. These aren't exactly the strongest pokemon but at the level I play that doesn't really matter.

That's understandable, but even back when I was a kid I used to make teams with varied Pokemon.
From the poisons you have I'd say Crobat is the best, followed by Weezing/Muk

You should use the Pokemon which you like best though, after all it's a game and In-game It can't hurt much.
But having a team with a common weakness is quite difficult to use successfully in competitive battles.

Using the right status effect along with the right Pokemon can actually work quite well, even if you're not doing it just to troll people
I had a Shuckle with Rest,Dig,Toxic and Sandstorm.
Dig is a two turn move allowing Bad poison to take effect twice while dodging one attack, sandstorm will also chip some health away from the opponent and boost you sp.Def 1.5 times, and rest removes all status effects on Shuckle and will heal him as well so you can kill your opponent in your sleep.

Too bad Paralyze and Poison don't go hand in hand with each other, but confusion and parallelization will.
A Togekiss with Airslash (30% chance of flinch) a paralyzation move, confusing move and Serene Grace ability (doubles secondary effects like flinching) can be devastating.
Blissey can do this too, but with Rockslide instead of Airslash, and perhaps thunder instead of thunderwave if you're feeling lucky.

Damn, I feel so nerd right now.

I would be weary of using dig to stall because earthquake, an extremely common and powerful move, does double damage and always hits if you're underground, and hits your slightly weaker normal defense.

Also, this guy would be REALLY annoying if you already had Stealth Rock out when you sent him out... I might need to train up a good troll shuckle

Yeah, you have to watch out for earthquake, so it takes a little bit of prediction.
The main reason it has dig is to do at least a little bit of damage while stalling for time.

I did some research on those two pokemon you mentioned, and they are no match for my typhlosion, so my team is still pretty good to stall time.

Also is catching a chansey still batshit insane difficult ? since having a blissey would be perfect.

Did you notice that brozong has an ability that makes it take half damage from fire, and they almost always have earthquake? (fire is weak to ground)

Actually Bronzong can have the Heatproof ability, which halves the power of fire attacks, And now you're assuming that Thyplosion will be alive until Bronzong/Metang make their entrance.

Haha, No not at all, I got 6 Lucky eggs on two games and it didn't take me more time to gather them than one hour, even though the chance of them carrying lucky egg is 5%
I used a Pokemon with Compound Eyes yo increase that 5% into something like 25%.

You have to wait until they swarm in route 13, then the chance of meeting one becomes about 30% instead of 1%

That's not really the point, there are also alternatives to Bronzong like Torterra and Rhyphor, who are neat and are more common.

Gaddam Stantler's are a bitch to capture, it killed four of my pokemon and went through three pokeballs and two greatballs. Also my Magikarp evolved into a Gyarados, then I went back to Goldenrod and had it nicknamed "Magikarp."

Yes man that's how I used to do it when I played pokemon. Paralysis, sleep, confusion and toxic. I liked all the cheese moves like guillotine as well.

Well if you have Diamond/Pearl/Platinum it's not hard to get Magnezone, but yeah, a lot of the new evolution requirements are silly. I especially hate how only female Combees can evolve, but most Combees are male

Also Magnemite and co. should all have Levitate. I don't care if it breaks the game, it just makes sense.

Also having the ability Levitate should make you stronger against Ground and Fighting but weak against Electricity and Rock as if you were Flying-type (but you don't get STAB). It just makes sense!

Okay, that jaw would not be suited to eat anything other than plant material. the things he calls "omnivorous teeth" look like molars, and those are only good for crushing and grinding.

I'm also interested in how its skull is that of a synapsid, although I guess Bulbasaur is more reminiscent of a dimetrodon than a dinosaur.

If you want a powerful Unown you'll have to get one with Hidden power[psychic] and give it a choice scarf... and it'll still suck, it's not surprising that you're stuck at the shit gym.

You can also have rematches against all gym leaders and the E4.
The gymleader rematches are pretty good for training because you can choose a leader who is weak against the pokemon you're trying to train.
Like when you're training Thyplosion you fight Erika.

I suggest you stock up on Lucky eggs as soon as you get the chance to.
Those things will halve the amount of time required.
one will do too but you'll have to switch it around.

Fly and surf are the only important ones though, all the others are hardly used.
As attacks those two aren't even that bad.

Waterfall Is an HM which you'll only use about 3 times, and after that you'll never have to use it again, one to get in Kanto, one for Tyrogue and one for Moltress.
It can potentially be better than surf though on a Pokemon with a higher attack than sp.attack.

Aqua tail is an slightly more powerful, but less accurate alternative for waterfall.

But I think it's possible to do something like it to the DS, at least I assume the DS has some kind of internal clock or anything like it.

This is the first time I am raising Pokemon just because I love their types and designs, rather than power and ease to pass through the gyms.

I am currently training a second party.

The first main one consists in

Typhlosion
Pidgeot
Ampharos
Beedrill
Slowbro
Primeape

The second one so far is

Scizor
Zangoose
Medicham
Lanturn (might replace him)

I am also avoiding to use legendaries like Lugia.

I want to find the way to cover as many types as possible in my second party. (though Zangoose is just there because he is my favorite Normal-type) Maybe I will include Dragonite in it.

Yeah or if you go to Bill's house in Cerulean Cape you can show pokemon to his grandpa to get stones. Oddish for leaf, Vulpix/Growlithe for Fire, etc..

High defense, low attack, and it has a lot of annoyer  attacks like confuse ray and hypnosis, additionally it only has 1 weakness and that is either fire or ground so there is no way of knowing which one it is.

All around it looks pretty lame, and pretty much is useless when you're using it in-game until it finally evolves into an even uglier, even lamer Pokemon.
By that time you've had plenty of time to catch more useful and likable Pokemon

I got HG about a few weeks ago, borrowed my friends DS with it to boot. Just managed to take out the fourth gym leader, on my way to Olivine now. Currently running with Bayleef, Magmar, Ghastly, Sudowoodo, Togetic, and Sandshrew. Im gonna swap out Sudowoodo and Ghastly soon, just because having three pokemon week against water is a dumb idea, and ghastly dies too damn easilly once I get a horsey.

You need a dragon Scale to evolve kingdra though.
It can be found on wild Horseas, but it's rare.
You can also get one in Mt. Mortar and buy them at the pokeathlon.

True. Same general idea: While I'm not one of the fans who freaks out about how much Gen. IV supposedly has the worst designs, I can say that probably most of my least favorite designs come out of Gen. IV and I'm hoping they don't make the fire starter lame because he looks promising.

That being said I do not like Spoink's family or Swinub's family (yes I know not from Gen IV), simply from a design perspective. As pokemon I never used Spoink's family but I had a Mamoswine for a while and they're alright as a pokemon

I've not really liked the Gen IV designs too much either. However Gible, Gabite and Garchomp look awesome. All in all I think Gen II was my favourite, with Totodile being my favourite starter.

However my all time favourite Pokemon is still and will always be Haunter.

I've always had this idea for two legendaries. The games would be set in a large island archipellago, with the two legendaries being a sperm whale and a giant squid who have fought for centuries under the depths, only to be brought out by Team Whateverwe'recallingthegangstersthistime.

Whale would be Water/Dragon cause I feel like it. Let's say maybe it can fly like the Wind Fish or something?

Squid would be Water/Dark obviously.

I'd like a game where you get a pretty common pokemon as a starter, the team rocket or whatever bad guys are much more aggressive, the story line leaves you as more of an average joe, and you couldn't catch ANY of the legendaries in the game. They're a hardcore fight that requires all the skill possible to beat, but you're left with a pokedex entry. If you want them you have to get their gimped ass in an event.

I had an idea for a non-traditional group of starter evos revolving around rock/flying/fighting type weaknessess.

Every starter would start out normal, as to allow normal attacks to effect every starter.

First evolutions are (names made up by me)

Phageria:Normal-Virus pokemon, looks like a bacteriophage(thus the name) except is about three feet tall. White except for a purple protein case at its top. Learns Leech Life and Rock Throw

Fledge:Normal:Fledgling pokemon(yeah my naiming's a little lazy), looks like a chick with white down plumage and grey wings. Learns Gust and Aerial Ace.

Blancanol-Normal: Lizard pokemon akin to an anole, it is white except for a red dewlap(sort of a frill under the jaw). Learns Break Break.

Second evolutions:

Prokarian-Rock:Looks like an E. Coli bacterium, except brown. It has cillia all around its body which allow it to move around even with its rock-hard cell wall. Learns Rollout, Rock Slide, and Recover.

Carrioptera-Flying(there's really no reason for there not to be a pure flying type): Vulture pokemon(name is a pun on carrion and the suffix optera, which means wing) Black with a pink head, basically like a stereotypical vulture. It can learn the moves Bite, Chatter and Air Slash before evolving

Kinechro-Fighting: Upright lizard, still retains anole characteristics. Has strong hind legs, so learns double kick, rolling kick and jump kick here.(name combination of Kinetics i.e. motion and part of the anole's family)

Third evolutions:

Psyeukar-Rock/Psychic: Looks like a giant eukaryotic cell that can levitate with a glowing purple nucleus. Learns Psybeam on evolution, Psychic, Stone Edge, and Rock Wrecker.

It doesn't learn roost I guess?

I could also make it immediately a Flying/Dark type at evo 2.

Yeah, I'm going to eventually give up Kingdra thought. I think my final pokemon team isn't going to have a rainy day move, so swift swim's going to be useless, and Kingdra's stats's aren't really that great to begin with. Kingdra's a great Pokemon. High, well rounded stats and only one weakness. Teach it Rain Dance if it has Swift Swim. It'll be worth it, not just for the Speed increase but for the boost of Water-type moves. It wouldn't be a bad idea even if it didn't have Swift Swim. You can get one with Sniper if you want, that's a decent ability. Teach it Surf and Dragon Pulse if its Special Attack is higher than its Attack (the base stats are the same) or Waterfall or Dive and Outrage if its Attack is higher than its Special Attack, and you'll have a pretty fucking good Pokemon.

I don't see why you say that its stats suck, or why Dragonite's attack power is lacking. If I had to take a wild guess I'd say that you're holding them to the standard of a Pokemon with a very high Base-stat total and especially high Attack and/or Special Attack, e.g. almost every single legendary with a base stat total of 670 or more, but that would be ridiculous.

Anyway, yes, I'll try to get you that Gible, if someone else doesn't first.

Dragonite's attack power isn't as much as it is lacking as much as it is dull compared to the other two dragon's I'm aiming for. Kingdra's stats are pretty well rounded, but really doesn't exceed in any other stat. I'm not trying to hold it to a legendary pokemon's stat pool, but on the OU tier, there's just better choices.

That said I'd like to get a Gible because Garchomp looks pretty badass (also I can name it GARLOCK). I've always thought Salamence and its evolutions were the lamest looking pseudo-legendaries.

Also I'm gonna evolve my Seadra as soon as I can be arsed to get on GTS.

Using Pokemon SOLELY based on stats is lame. I don't use Pokemon I think are ugly, but I'm not going to use Pokemon whose stats would make them too difficult to use, such as Smeargle.

The way I use Pokemon is situational, though. I train what Pokemon I need when I need them.

Bellossom's stats aren't that bad btw.

Yeah, they can be pretty hard to train, mostly because they're a rare type that's filled with legendaries and pseudo-legendaries and the pre-evolved forms of pseudo-legendaries. Legendaries are almost always in the slow experience group (all Dragon-type legendaries are in the slow experience group) and the lines of pseudo-legendaries are always in the slow experience group, and take a long ass time to get to their final form. Dragonair evolves into Dragonite at level 55.

I like the gear based pokemon, the horse and the alligator. The pink thing might grow on me, the fire thing might grow on me and I hate the cutesy little mouse-squirrel thing. Also, I like the bird. The female professor is a nice idea but I don't like her hair, too mavericky.

Also the new region looks pretty cool, being split up the way it is. Also I like drawbridges.

Also the pokedex totally reminds me of a calculator

All in all looks like a good(?) new game, maybe not the series overhaul I've been hoping for but w/e

I think tiers are pretty dumb and I really shouldn't pay much attention to them, but one thing that bugs me whole lot about them is that more than half of all fully evolved Pokemon are in the "Never Used" tier. (http://www.smogon.com/dp/tiers/) It's not that there are so many Pokemon in that tier, it's the name. It gives the impression that these Pokemon aren't supposed to be used. "Oh!" an aspiring new player might say, "these Pokemon are shit! I should use the same damn higher tier Pokemon that everyone else uses and record incredibly boring battles that no one will want to watch because they've seen battles with the same damn Pokemon and the same damn strategies a million times before." But truth be told, there are plenty of fine Pokemon in there, some of them actually quite awesome. Even more unfortunate, the name has some truth to it: because people are discouraged from using Pokemon in this tier, they are indeed almost never used. It's a cycle.

"Never Used" should be renamed "Average" or "Decent", "Under Used" should be renamed "Good", "Borderline" should be renamed "Even Better", "Over Used" should be renamed "Really Good", and "Uber" should be renamed "Annoying bastards who are so OP that even the most metagame-obsessed, munchkining, play-to-win teenage assholes avoid using them for the sake of humanity". Although Wobbuffet and Wynaut are exempt from from being subject to such a title, because they are hilarious and lovable. I don't care how "uber" they are
