Hey this game is pretty neat. You guys heard of it?
That the one with the cowboy or some shit?
I'd imagine it goes something like this
"Hey i'm the protagonist who has a single minded goal, whats up"
"Hey I might know something that'll lead you to another something which will help you reach your goal but first you must do *insert pointless task/fetch quest #49849038 here*"

Quote from: Boy George;1758161That's how all games that use any form of quests work.
yeah but the quests are usually more interesting then "Pick up person A and bring them here" or "Go get this and bring it here" or "Go here and kill X amount of people and come back" or "Drive around an obstacle course in a specific vehicle".
Alot of open world/Sandbox games seem to have similiar problems. Assasins Creed 1 for instance...
Also, not every game that uses quests recycles the same quests over and over. Rockstar is by far the most notorious when it comes to this.

I shot a ton of bitches right in the face.
At one point a guy was holding some other guy's daughter hostage, so I snuck up and hid around the corner, and then just popped out and shot him in the face. It wouldn't have been nearly as satisfying had the game not made it that shooting people in the face blows a huge fucking hole in their head.
It was fucking awesome. I paused the game and masturbated to car parts after that.
posting again here to also say that's how formulas in adventure games are, but obviously what makes them fun is HOW you do it. This industry would have died decades ago if we all cared about the basic structure.
and 1983 doesn't count.

Quote from: Nightmare Clock;1758177ITT: Nintendo complains about the formula 75% of video games have had since they existed
There are so many different things wrong with this statement I don't even know where to start.
All i'm saying is RDR is just another GTA clone thats bound to get repetitive in a matter of days.
Sure games like Fallout, Diablo, Zelda, System Shock 2, KotOR, ME, have the same "quest formula" but you missed my point entirely. Most games dont get repetitive where as I have yet to play a Rockstar game that wasnt repetitive. Can any of you honestly sit here and say you haven't gotten bored with GTA after playing it for a few weeks?
Quote from: topcatyo;1758185ITT Nintendo complains about every video game ever made including Half-Life, Zelda, Mario, Diablo, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid...
I dont remember driving from point a to point b in any of those games.
And since when does Half-life, Mario, and Metal Gear Solid have a quest system? I mean I guess you could count "The princess is in another console" but come on that was like 1985.
I didn't disagree, I'm just saying - Fallout, Zelda, KotOR, ME, etc. also get boring in a few weeks. That's kinda how it works.
Also how come you didn't yell at topcat >:C
Edit:
just kidding about yelling at topcat
Now see, I knew you were gonna say that.
I played ME from start to finish doing every side quest and multiple playthroughs to see its different endings, outcomes, and plot lines. Bioware manages to make their games REPLAYABLE as opposed to repetitive.
All together I put over 200 hours into the original ME just on multiple playthroughs. I made a 15 hour game last for more then just a couple weeks.
I cant do this in say, GTAIV. Why? Because its all the same shit. Nothing I do effects anything else other then advancing a linear story that I hardly care about. Oh sure I can blow shit up and beat up hookers but thats only fun for so long.
[u2]FESOPPP5YEQ[/u2]
to me, discovering this for the first time was infinitely more entertaining and rewarding then beating up a hooker and stealing money.

No, you walked instead.
QuoteAnd since when does Half-life, Mario, and Metal Gear Solid have a quest system? I mean I guess you could count "The princess is in another console" but come on that was like 1985.
I'm not talking quests specifically, but every game basically consisted of a ton of deviations from your main goal. I have repurposed your dialogue to fit Half-Life, Mario, and Metal Gear Solid.
Quote from: Half-Life"..."
"Oh hey, Gordon, I know you want to get out of this science lab, but can you go and do an emergency shutdown of the station?"
"..."
"Oh, hey, Gordon, now that you've done an emergency shutdown of the station can you go and destroy some blind tentacle monster?"
"..."
"Oh, hey, Gordon, I know you want to destroy some blind tentacle monster but can you go down three separate routes and activate three different"
I've stopped that one there.
Quote from: Super Mario 64"It's-a me! Mario! I'ma gonna get you, Bowser!"
"Oh, hey Mario, before you get bowser can you get 70 stars in several different levels."
"Um, sure, let me just go in this world here..."
"Oh, hey Mario! I'm that Koopa guy let's race mothafucka!"
Some time passes.
"Oh, hey Mario! I'm that Koopa guy let's race in a different level mothafucka!"
I'd do Metal Gear Solid but honestly you get the point.
I'll be honest Nintendo from what I've played of Red Dead I have haven't done the same thing in two different missions yet. You haven't even played the game (I don't expect you to) but it sounds to me like you're getting angry because...
Actually, I don't have a reason, why are you being so angry? Stop getting mad at video games, Jesus.
Also you are totally being dumb every single one of Mass Effect's missions were the same thing, especially the side missions.
Quote from: Mass Effect side missionStep 1: Go to planet where you have received a distress call.
Step 2: Drive around on a barren planet for five minutes to your destination
Step 3: Exit vehicle
Step 4: Go in building
Step 5: Talk to some guy or, more than likely, kill a group of enemies in the same exact building/cave from the other side missions
Step 6: Maybe talk to some guy, but, more than likely, you won't
Step 7: Exit building
Step 8: Press "N" to go back to the Normandy
Step 9: Go to the Galaxy Map to talk to that guy with the weird voice.
Step 10: Get experience and gold
Step 11: Bang some blue chick
Nintendo, seriously, stop being such a butt.
You are being a butt. Stop it.

RDR Is essentially, nothing more then a GTAIV clone. It uses many (if not all) of the same systems, quests, gameplay from GTA, the only difference being you're in a western setting as opposed to a city.
Open world - Check
Linear quests that follow a linear story - Check
Wanted level - Check
Beat up hookers and blow shit up without any consequences on the over all world - check
Meet a bunch of uninteresting stereotypical characters who have little to do with the main objective - Check
Do the same mission over and over with a few minor changes to the setup - Check
ME isnt a GTAIV clone
Zelda isnt a GTAIV clone
Mario isnt a GTAIV clone
Saying that they follow the "Same formula" as 75% of the games that have ever existed ever is seriously nothing more then comparing apples and oranges. You are correct in certain respect but you are wrong in many others. You cant seriously sit here and say Shadow of the Collosus is anything like The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind but you can say they follow the "same formula". Where as RDR and GTA IV are so similar its practically the same game with a new paint job.
Now lets completely ignore my point entirely for the 19580983 time.
Let me reiterate
QuoteI played ME from start to finish doing every side quest and multiple playthroughs to see its different endings, outcomes, and plot lines. Bioware manages to make their games REPLAYABLE as opposed to repetitive.

There's plenty of shit different than Grand Theft Auto. The western setting changes things quite a bit, mind you. Horses sure don't control like cars and some mechanics have been changed quite a bit.
QuoteOpen world - Check This is a bad thing.

Do the same mission over and over with a few minor changes to the setup - Check I've already said I've so far found plenty of variation in the missions with this game.
ME isnt a GTAIV clone No, it's a KOTOR clone
Zelda isnt a GTAIV clone Zelda features the open world, linear quests following linear story. It also has horses, one can make comparisons between Zelda and Red Dead Redemption if one wants to (I won't bother)
Mario isnt a GTAIV clone Mario is about as close to being a GTA clone as Starcraft, so what's the point in bringing it up?
Saying that they follow the "Same formula" as 75% of the games that have ever existed ever is seriously nothing more then comparing apples and oranges. Then why did you bring up Mario? You are correct in certain respect but you are wrong in many others. You cant seriously sit here and say Shadow of the Collosus is anything like The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind but you can say they follow the "same formula". We were discussing the story formula, dipshit, not gameplay. You know, how you start off doing one thing and then do other things before getting back to finally doing that one thing? Don't you remember that? Where as RDR and GTA IV are so similar its practically the same game with a new paint job. Again, there are quite a few differences but you're not going to hear it so I don't see why I'm even bothering.
Now lets completely ignore my point entirely for the 19580983 time. I've addressed your arguments.
Sorry I dont suck Rockstars dick guys. Clearly I am a fanboy because I genuinely enjoy their games and am not baselessly angry at a game I haven't played like you are. I'll stfu now. Please do.
God, when did someone merge my thread with a Gamespot thread?
Not to mention RDR has an honor system so if you do bad things good people will avoid you and bad people will chill with you and stuff like that.
Quote from: topcatyoOpen world - Check This is a bad thing.
No, but its the same premise as GTAIV. Put the player in an open world with the same repetitive shit to do over and over
QuoteLinear quests that follow a linear story - Check Stories are bad things
Of course stories aren't bad things. When did I ever say they were? I'm merely pointing out that the stories Rockstar usually comes up with usually involve some sort of typical macho man protagonist who has some sort of revenge/rescue story. Its the same shit only with a different setting or different poorly thought out circumstances.
QuoteWanted level - Check It works more like Morrowind in this game than in Grand Theft Auto
The point is, its there which only helps support my claim that RDR is esentially a GTA clone with a western setting.
QuoteBeat up hookers and blow shit up without any consequences on the over all world - check Again, this is bad
Never said it was bad, but it gets repetitive just like everything else.. You can only beat up so many hookers before it looses its initial LOL/WTF factor.
QuoteMeet a bunch of uninteresting stereotypical characters who have little to do with the main objective - Check I think the characters are pretty cool, but, hey, your opinion is clearly fact so yeah they totally suck
Difference of opinion. I'm not saying i'm 100% right, everyones going to have different opinions but the characters I met were usually used in a way that tried to get a cheap laugh out of the player. Uninteresting, typical, BORING dialogue that i've heard in countless westerns and characters with stupid accents and other bullshit does not interest me. I'm sorry if it does you.
QuoteDo the same mission over and over with a few minor changes to the setup - Check I've already said I've so far found plenty of variation in the missions with this game.
Really? Cause every mission I played usually involved some boring dialogue, a boring cutscene, go here, shoot this, come back, another boring cutscene, claim reward. the end.
QuoteME isnt a GTAIV clone No, it's a KOTOR clone
The only, (and I stress only) comparison that can be made between KotOR is the dialogue system. Nothing else is even remotely similar.
QuoteZelda isnt a GTAIV clone Zelda features the open world, linear quests following linear story. It also has horses,
I wasnt a fan of Twilight princess. OoT is pretty much this but that was 13 years ago.
Quoteone can make comparisons between Zelda and Red Dead Redemption if one wants to (I won't bother)
You cant.
QuoteWe were discussing the story formula, dipshit,
I'm getting mad at video games? I havent even attempted to personally insult you once.
Quotenot gameplay. You know, how you start off doing one thing and then do other things before getting back to finally doing that one thing? Don't you remember that?
Once again missing my original point. Most story formulas are infinitely more interesting then anything Rockstar manages to put out. (Example = Metal Gear Solid) I was never talking about story formula, my main issue from the beginning of this thread is
how you go about advancing through the story. Strictly gameplay. Nothing more. And, as usual, its all repetitive garbage. RDR/GTAIV/GTA3/San andreas/Vice city all of it. Same shit, different setting.
QuoteAgain, there are quite a few differences but you're not going to hear it so I don't see why I'm even bothering.
Theres MINOR differences at best. Its still esentially a GTA clone thats bound to get repetitive and boring.
QuoteI've addressed your arguments.
Uh...
QuoteAgain, there are quite a few differences but you're not going to hear it so I don't see why I'm even bothering.
Oh ok...
QuoteClearly I am a fanboy because I genuinely enjoy their games and am not baselessly angry at a game I haven't played like you are.
I'm not angry. I'm just pointing out overrated SHIT when I see it.
Its not a HORRIBLE game by any means. Its just nothing new or interesting. Been there done that. Lemme know when Rockstar is being innovative for once.
Oh and also, the shooting needs work.
I can argue this for days but honestly this thread stopped being fun a long time ago so I'm going to say this:
Quote from: Patches O'Houlihan;1758341I'm getting mad at video games? I havent even attempted to personally insult you once.

It is true that Red Dead Redemption is a lot like GTA in many ways, you are using the similarities to extrapolate that Red Dead must also have the bad features of GTA when this is not the case.
One of your main complaints seems to be mission variety. This is ridiculous as red dead has a vast range of missions, and generally you're only going to see repeats in missions when you do the side missions (all the bounty hunter missions are pretty much the same but they're optional, same with herbalism, hunting ect).
As an example of the variety, (spoilers incoming so skip this if you haven't beat the main plot yet), there is a grand total of ONE mission each that feature the following: Steal knife assassination, minigun combat from a fixed location, minigun combat on a train, minigun combat from a car, breaking in a horse, herding cattle (there are actually 2 quests where you do this but the second one is much later and much more difficult), having a duel, placing and detonating explosives to stop a supply caravan, teaching your son how to hunt elk, killing a giant bear, tricking police into leaving their post so you can save a prisoner, sneaking into a fort undetected and then killing everybody with precision sniping, blah blah blah. Pretty much the only mission that is repeated is "attack a place and kill a lot of people" but even then the locations vary wildly and greatly effect gameplay. And here I haven't even gotten into the side quests such as hunting that add a lot of extra playtime to the game. I'd go so far as to say that Red Dead has some of the most varied gameplay of any game I've ever played.
damn it I made a big post and the shitstorm is already over
