This is the website. (http://iwl.me/)
Basically you past any piece of writing you've done into the text box and it somehow tells you that you write like so-and-so.
I inserted this little ditty I wrote a while ago (http://www.destructoid.com/something-about-sex-if-you-build-it-they-will-make-a-nude-mod-166182.phtml) and it told me I write like Cory Doctorow, who is some Canadian I've never heard of but apparently he writes stuff (but who cares, he's Canadian).
To test out the site to see how good it was, I posted a bit of the chapter where Boxer the horse gets killed from Animal Farm and pasted it into the box, and it told me I write like George Orwell.
I also typed in a page worth of "ad;ajopijo;znhio;nhio;zn;hioejgh" etc. and was told I write like William Gibson, so...
I copied my reply to SoBe's Medal of Honor thread into it and it told me im like:
David Foster Wallace. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&keywords=David+Foster+Wallace&tag=blogjetblog-20&index=books&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325)
Who is he? I don't particularly care.
Me and my GF both got "Cory Doctorow." Some Canadian blogger or somesuch.
EDIT: Oh fuck the whole gurlfrund thing. What the Hell do you want me to say. Anyways I did another story and got H.P. Lovecraft, which is way more badass and cool.
ajajajajaja Vladimir Nabokov!!! holy crap I can actually totally see that
my flowery elaborate prose practically screams lolita and pale fire I don't know how I never noticed this
oh christ I'm gonna be self-conscious about this for the rest of my life
I got George Orwell.
Oscar Wilde.
i really hope i dont actually write like this insufferable looking douche
(https://clockcrew.net/talk/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2Fa%2Fa9%2FCory_Doctorow_portrait_by_Jonathan_Worth_2.jpg%2F240px-Cory_Doctorow_portrait_by_Jonathan_Worth_2.jpg&hash=5e457d6218a85680ba75a2ce68fa0938a3ca5a14)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cory_Doctorow
I put in part of a noir short story I've been working on and got Raymond Chandler, a detective noir writer. Figures
Copied another piece of text and it said Chuck Palahniuk this time.
So I guess I'm a cross between Oscar and Chuck.

I got this guy too. :wiebel:
doctorow reads like a goosebumps book hopped up on the screenplay for "Hackers" (http://books.google.com/books?id=r1zne2mZDW8C&printsec=frontcover&dq=cory+doctorow&hl=en&ei=uYFDTIKxB5HWtQOywq2EDA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCkQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false) and it's weird that they'd even include him in the sorting algorithm.
he's slightly insufferable but he's done important things for Creative Commons imho.
something I wrote returned James Joyce, which is kind of insulting because without context Joyce reads like the inscrutable ramblings of a mad man. not exactly the kind of thing you want to be told you're doing on accident.
the story i put in was about a contemporary north dakota farming village and i got a science fiction writer/blogger fuck this thing
Quote from: SilverCherryClock;1769441the story i put in was about a contemporary north dakota farming village and i got a science fiction writer/blogger fuck this thing
I think it examines diction, not content.
if anything
I write like Vladmir Nabokov, Stephen King, Cory Doctrow, David Foster Wallace, Edgar Allen Poe, Dan Brown, and I'm tired of inserting blocks of text. Mostly Cory Doctrow, David Foster Wallace, and Dan Brown, though.

I liked Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. Whuffie is a cool concept.
This image is fake but it would be so great if it weren't.

I got Daniel Defoe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Defoe).
This produced Stephen King.Quotet8u745y94nu5yn945muy3495yuv39y4u5my-4059ymv305y34u5yv3v5y3n4y09n934yv97n754-4nv35. p9845v43n9643n99n-973f7394m36f6fv3f33m936m4v35mc65hy4gh5c5iffklgclhgtits. jerigvjherngvejrneirnbioreioenbwinrbpij j rbjnbbernbijenbernbpiaba erbaeibajerbiaeb a rbaeirbae rae rba erbiarbaerb.

Edit: Fuck that, I pasted the "I immediately came and started farting" story and it gave me Stephanie Meyer.
I put in that horrifying yugioh fanfic I wrote a while back and got Chuck Palahniuk.
I copy and pasted Topcatyo's first post.
Cory Doctorow again.
Quote from: FloundermanClock;1769472I put in that horrifying yugioh fanfic I wrote a while back and got Chuck Palahniuk.
ahahaha
Oh fucking christ, i put in an little paragraph i did a while back about continuity in the Terminator franchise and it told me i wrote like that Twilight bitch. :(

I also got Vladimir Nabokov so relax.
yeah I guess if you got it it's completely meaningless or possibly is actually a bad thing
I uploaded a little snippet from something in my spare time. Apparently i got Neil Gaiman.
I put in the word "penis" a hundred times and got Anne Rice. Then I tried "vagina" a hundred times and got her again.
I typed "Herp derp herp derp" etc. for about 20 lines and got Cory Doctorow again.
I typed the word "Vampire" about 50 times and got Bram Stoker.
I typed all 50 United States in alphabetical order and got Chuck Palahniuk.
Quote from: topcatyo;1769499I typed "Herp derp herp derp" etc. for about 20 lines and got Cory Doctorow again.
I got him after typing "hello I am a big fat gaydad with a gay face who's mom is gay and dad is gay lets all get gay"
I typed the n word about 50 times and got Mark Twain.
Quote from: topcatyo;1769502I typed the n word about 50 times and got Mark Twain.
That's brilliant
I typed the song that never ends 50 times and got Margaret Atwood.
Put in exceprts from various papers of mine, I got Isaac Asimov, then Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen King, Raymond Chandler, Neil Gaiman, Dan Brown (this was a bit from the same paper as what I got Asimov on), HP Lovecraft and finally Vladimir Nabokov.
Also I copy and pasted the word poop like a hundred times and got P.G. Wodehouse who apparently writes stories about a guy named Jeeves
Hahahaha, I inputted this one paper I made with bible quotes in it and it said I write like H.P. Lovecraft.
Quote from: topcatyo;1769502I typed the n word about 50 times and got Mark Twain.
I gotta admit, I laughed.
Pasted in a piece of creative writing i did a while ago. it came out with Raymond Chandler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Chandler).
I put in a small thing i did on the James Bond series and it told me i write like Ian Fleming. Hmm...
I wonder if it's based on how many times that writer uses a given word in the text. Thus Anne Rice for genitals (more like A. N. Roquelaure) and Mark Twain because of nigger jim.
Quote from: Albino;1769771I wonder if it's based on how many times that writer uses a given word in the text. Thus Anne Rice for genitals (more like A. N. Roquelaure) and Mark Twain because of norwegian jim.
I think you're right. At the top of the page it says
Quotewhich analyzes your word choice and writing style and compares them with those of the famous writers.
But I hardly believe that a program can actually analyze writing style (unless it picks out words that are adjectives and adverbs and counts their frequency or whatever, but that's still pretty bare-bones), so it probably just compares word choice.

It could be monitoring occurrences of punctuation as well.
cory doctorow
I entered a poem of mine and got H.P. Lovecraft.
I put in a satirical piece I did on TV and got Ian Flemming.
Then put in an essay I did for a class annnnd got Arthur Conan Doyle.
So, apparently I write like the guys that wrote James Bond and Sherlock Holmes.
fuck yessssssssss
(http://iwl.me/w/f2fcfd6c)
I got Vonnegut, Lovecraft, Dan Brown, and James Joyce. Dan Brown's not that great but the other three are pretty cool.
Copy-pasted the lyrics to the long version of Rapper's Delight and still got Cory Doctorow.
I pasted a few big posts I made and got Cory Doctorow.
Quote from: Cowboy Bebop;1769508I typed the song that never ends 50 times and got Margaret Atwood.
if you've ever read any atwood, that's actually very apt
i pasted some entire stories and sections i've written years ago and recently and mostly got cory doctorow and chuck palahniuk
i pasted in the entire body of a 21 page legal research paper i did junior year and got david foster wallace
i pasted the story i wrote based on snapple's
oregon trail diaries and i got dan brown and i'm not sure what to make of that
Put a chapter of something I worked on and it said I write like David Foster Wallace.
But that's bullshit, that chapter is nothing like his writing as far as I can tell.
Closest writer to it is actually probably (early) Terry Pratchett.
i got james joyce
(because i like farts i guess idk)
Quote from: topcatyo;1769830But I hardly believe that a program can actually analyze writing style (unless it picks out words that are adjectives and adverbs and counts their frequency or whatever, but that's still pretty bare-bones), so it probably just compares word choice.
i'm pretty sure i kept getting james joyce because i was using emails (things like 'hello' 'i've missed you' 'i love you' etc,) or atleast i hope it was because of that
Awww yeeee

You know what I don't think it is that far off either. Obviously not quality wise but by how I describe things and sentence/paragraph structure.
I put in:
QuoteJim, a writer from a small town in New England, is being terrorized by an inanimate object that has mysteriously come to life.
and got H. P. Lovecraft.
Then I put in:
QuoteJim, a writer from a small town in New England, is being terrorized by an inanimate object that has mysteriously come to life and kills the only black guy in a hundred-mile radius.
and got Stephen King.
Quote from: SchnozzberryClock;1771281I put in:

Hahaha
Anne Rice? Who is Anne Rice?
Got Stephen King, James Joyce and Vladimir Nabokov from different excerpts of the same poopoo i wrote in november
I don't see any resemblance
Quote from: TequilaClock;1771286Anne Rice? Who is Anne Rice?
A good writer, even if you don't like Jesus.
Entered in the latest Destructoid thing I wrote (http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/topcatyo/review-the-silver-lining-episode-1-what-is-decreed-must-be-179717.phtml) and got David Foster Wallace.

She writes erotica about vampires and sleeping beauty.
Quote from: Albino;1771451She writes erotica about vampires and sleeping beauty.
Fuck, what is it with women and their woman boners for vampires lately.
edit: wait they were into it ages ago too?
Another Cory
apparently the clock crew is full of canadian bloggers.

Anne Rice
way predates those shitty Twilight novels.

Long, long ago.
I remember being like 12 and reading Anne Rice.
Vampires used to be cool. Until vampire romance was created.
Quote from: Ram.;1771509Vampires used to be cool. Until vampire romance was created.
So for 0.8 of a second?
About that. The only cool thing vampires have done was that time that Vlad impaled a bunch of people
Are you trying to say Blade isn't awesome? Because that is just false.

Watch True Blood and tell me that vampires aren't cool.
Quote from: topcatyo;1769502I typed the n word about 50 times and got Mark Twain.
I read this post right after I tried it myself.
i got stephen king
I'm fairly convinced this doesn't work. I punched in a novel I wrote and got Dan Brown. When I took off the epilogue, it said I write like Raymond Chandler, who wrote noir detective stories. When I took off the prologue, it said I write like HP Lovecraft.
Baffling, really.

Do you use a different voice in your prologue and epilogue?
Quote from: Albino;1772907Do you use a different voice in your prologue and epilogue?
Actually, I wrote them very much alike. The first paragraphs even matched.
Well, it's obviously based on usage of particular words and sets of punctuation. It's not like it's not based on anything at all, it's just that what it's based on isn't that complex or significant. It's just another "what serial killer are you?" test and we're going "omg i took it twice and i'm bundy and gacy how did this happen".

Mm, I didn't say it was bogus, I just said it didn't work.
I tried punching in "For sale, baby shoes, never worn." and I got Margaret Mitchell, who wrote
Gone With the Wind. It's fun to see how you can trick this thing. :D
Quote from: clammo;1772920eg: i got douglas adams as one, but that doesnt mean i could write a continuation of the hitchhikers series

Margaret Atwood.

i can see the point you're trying to make here with that particular hemingway short short, but you're being intentionally obtuse in using that as an example
Quote from: a sack of baby dicks;1772943i can see the point you're trying to make here with that particular hemingway short short, but you're being intentionally obtuse in using that as an example
I punched in Chuck Palahniuk's "Choke", and it said he writes like Stephen King. I wanted to punch in "Fight Club" as well, but I can't find a PDF that would let me copy its text. I also tried punching in The Eye of Argon, and it said that the guy writes like David Foster Wallace. ^___^
So far the only accurate thing is that I punched in "Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman, and it said he writes like Neil Gaiman. Either he's very distinct, or tends to write the same way. I doubt it, though, since they said American Gods is written like William Gibson. :wut:
What would you suggest that's less obtuse?
