Title: The Official Alien Swarm Thread
Post by: SoBe Clock on July 19, 2010, 10:13:08 AM
The game gets released in four hours, so I figured I'd make a discussion thread for it.

This thread is for discussion of all things related to Valve's new free game, Alien Swarm.

Here are both of the trailers for the game.
http://store.steampowered.com/video/630

I'm going to start downloading it the minute it gets released. Who's up for playing with me today?

EDIT: System Requirements-
Minimum:

OS: Windows® 7 / Vista / Vista64 / XP
Processor: Pentium 4 3.0GHz
Memory: 1 GB for XP / 2GB for Vista
Graphics: DirectX 9 compatible video card with 128 MB, Shader model 2.0. ATI X800, NVidia 6600 or better
Hard Drive: At least 2.5 GB of free space
Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

Recommended:

OS: Windows® 7 / Vista / Vista64 / XP
Processor: Intel core 2 duo 2.4GHz
Memory: 1 GB for XP / 2GB for Vista
Graphics: DirectX 9 compatible video card with Shader model 3.0. NVidia 7600, ATI X1600 or better
Hard Drive: At least 2.5 GB of free space
Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

Also you need Steam.

Don't worry if you don't quite meet the recommended requirements. Source games run on most computers out there, so you probably can run it.

Then I will tell you if I join.

You're going to have to download it through steam, so I assume you'd need it.

Yes, you need Steam, and the minimum requirements on hard drive space are at least 2.5 GB free.

I might as well add the system requirements to the first post.

We don't have an event because only 4 people can play together. If we had something like a 16-32 player server to fill I'd make it an event, but not 4.

4 people you can organize without making it an event.

Since there are some of you just getting Steam for the first time just for this game, I'll post my Steam name here so you guys can add me and we can play together.

Steam name = sobeclock
My name will comer up as GameGuruTB(<) in the friends list.

Also, I just noticed something in the game's description on Steam.
- Tile-based map generation tool
If this game has an easy to use in-game map editor I will be quite pleased.

It can take a while, just let it sit. It will eventually move past 0% and once it does it doesn't take long.

Zen's quest for a slurpee is epic indeed
He dashes off to the store in our time of great need
First the warning bells said no, Zen did heed
But then an extra 2 hours were decreed.

An alien swarm is coming, must get an icy treat
A slurpee in Zen's belly would be ever so neat
The taste of a slurpee, it can't be beat
The syrup so sugar you'll hear your heart beat.

My unca died from a slurpee, you know
Had a heart-attack and hypothermia in the snow
But the slurpee was too hard to resist
So now my unca has ceased to exist.

I once, for a slurpee, killed 7 samurai
They burst into my room and told me "YOU DIE"
I looked at my slurpee and breathed with a sigh
Now they are but spirit dragons roaming the sky

A slurpee saved my life one day
My car was dying and acting really gay
So I poured slurpee in my car like antifreeze
And then it started working again and I drove with ease.

A slurpee stole my virginity
Came across one in an alley
I fell unconscious when it punched me
Afterward my anus hurt and was cold as can be.

I eventually filed a police report
The slurpee threatened to kill me, what a bad sport
He was easy to pick out in the line-up, he was so short
I was gonna have a baby but I had to abort.

Zen should soon be back with his ice drink
It's been at least 10 minutes, I think
And it's still 2 hours until Alien Swarm
Here's hoping Zen drinks that slurpee before it gets warm.

I'll do that in a bit. now.

Some things I've learned while playing the first level.

You need at least a medic and a tech and one of the other two classes. Reason being is that the tech needs to interact with things like control panels in the environment, the medic needs to keep the team alive, and the other soldier needs to carry deployable ammo. You will run out of ammo fast in this game, if you reload before your clip is empty, you will lose all the ammo in that clip permanently, so having one guy carry ammo is pretty necessary. The medic needs to carry the heal beacons.
EDIT: Also use melee attack to conserve ammo

Game is over for now but we had some fun times and I drew a penis on the map over and over as Sobe died 5 feet from me.  That was pretty fun.

I also welded a door that kept about 8 enemies on the other side.  I thought that was fine and dandy until we got rid of most of the swarm that I checked the door again to find that the doors break so, with a second to think, as soon as the door bust open I shot a stun grenade and we wiped them out.  Awesome.

Shit, that's what happened for you?  For the rest of us it was we all got to the elevator (well, except Marlin) and then the server dropped.

If you look 2 pages back, i had this exact same problem yesterday. play the game in offline practice mode for awhile then wait. I went on steam this morning and it informed me that Sobe and Zenmicro had added me to their friends list.

As of this iteration, my computer can no longer run the source engine. Which means no Alien Swarm, and no Portal 2

This is a sad day for YoYoClock. =(

Are you sure you can't just turn the quality down? This game has the same requirements as Left 4 Dead 1.

Also, sorry I didn't sign back on last night guys. After playing borderlands with my friend I just got ridiculously tired and had to go to sleep.

EDIT: I'll be playing a lot today though.

According the steam site, the source engine in this game is at a version between l4d2 and portal2. The game doesnt even open, I just get an error message, so I can't change the settings.

Everyone on the steam forums with the same problem have similar old rigs to me.

Hmmm, maybe it's not counting Alien Swarm as a game since it's free.
You could try playing Trackmania Nations Forever (another free Steam game) and see if it makes a difference. If that doesn't work you may just have to buy a $5 game or something to use the friends list.

EDIT: Or you could submit a support ticket to valve's tech support and see if they can sort it out for you.

Rob, I clicked on your profile and got this:

This user has not yet set up their Steam Community profile.
If you know them encourage him/her to set up their profile and join in on the gaming!

So if you set up your profile the problems might be solved. I don't think steam tracks gameplay unless your profile is set up, so set up your profile and play a game for a while and then see if you can add friends.

I wish there was more than one campaign.

Although, to its credit, the one campaign is much longer than one Left 4 Dead campaign. Also this game is supposed to be really easy to create maps for, so we will likely see a bunch of user generated missions, and on top of that I'm sure Valve will add more campaigns of their own later on.

This is what I love about it. They had the balls to go through with an arcade-style game and they actually did a really good job with it. Fucking Valve.

It seems source games have been going a bit crazy fro me lately, too. I'm getting weird spikes and pings I never used to get, and Sourcemod radio doesn't work for me anymore. It will load the page and everything, but when I select a genre to play, the little media player thing in the browser that pops up just isn't there. Jukebox also does not work, it does everything except actually play the songs.

I have tried everything I can think of to remedy these things, but nothing works. I believe it all started after the Engie update.

I'm actually gonna have to disagree there.  It usually takes about 30 minutes to beat a map in Left 4 Dead, assuming everything goes right, and there are five maps in a campaign.  Generally a Left 4 Dead campaign takes around 2 to 2 and a half hours to complete.

Meanwhile, Alien Swarm has 7 maps on it, but one can beat the maps in around 5-10 minutes, with barely any match going on longer than then.  Assuming all goes well, like we're assuming with the Left 4 Dead campaign, and assuming every map takes 10 minutes to beat, that's only an hour and 10 minutes to finish the campaign.  That's a lot shorter than Left 4 Dead, even if we added another 10 minutes to compensate for choosing weapons in the loadout screen.

Game's still fun as hell, though.

There's an SDK for it under the tools tab in steam and there's a basic map editor in game. I'm using that first, then exporting the VMF file and editing it in Hammer.

What issues were you having? I'm only having issues when I load it into Hammer and that's most likely because I don't know what I'm doing in there. I'll learn eventually though.
