Title: Vanessa Saint-Pierre Delacroix & Her Nightmareht
Post by: AnimeClock on August 01, 2010, 07:49:45 PM
This is a puzzle/platforming game I've been interning on this summer. My developer guy describes it as Super Mario meets Rubik's cube

I came on late in the project so I didn't really have anything to do with the concept or programming. I animated all of the sprites though. This is our first release, just in time for the indiePub contest. There will be more stuff and more animations in further releases. It's a free download and I think it's pretty fun. Try it out and lemme know what you think.

It's very cool.  Neat concept for the puzzles.  The flipping the world aspect has been done before, so it remains to be seen how well you guys utilized it for your level design.

Some suggestions:

1.) Make the sprites a higher resolution.  Crisper sprites would help aid the game visually.  Right now it doesn't strike me as the most visually pleasing game.  I don't really like the background to the cube (the village bitmap).  It just seems to bright and distracting when compared to the bricks.  Perhaps make the image a bit darker (try changing the hue to a blue, like, #1d578c or something.  I'm not sure if you're in charge of that).

Here's a quick Photoshop I did to show you kinda what that would look like.

Original

Blue-ish version.

That's not entirely perfect either, you could change that plenty too to make it better.

2.) More level design than visual design, but you could probably combine the first 5 levels to make one longer tutorial level.  There's probably too much to combine all 5 into one level, but at the very least you can combine the first 2 or 3 and then combine the other 2, and possibly levels later than 5 (I don't know for sure, the demo only goes to level 5).  That way you could kinda get the tutorial levels faster to either get them to the harder concepts in the tutorials before they start thinking everything is too tedious, or just get them ready for the actual game later.

Either way, looks promising, I look forward to seeing the full thing.

I'm just looking at the screenshots, but maybe have more than one brick sprite?

This is great feedback, thank you. I'll bring these things up to my dev. If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to play all the way to level 36? If you want, check it again and let me know if it's not letting you. I don't have a special version or anything, I downloaded it from that link, so it should play all the way through.

Didn't really like that trailer. Way too artsy-fartsy for my tastes. Also, the upstanding tone of the guy's voice really clashes with some of the words he says, like when he said something about "stupid peers".

Looks neat. I'll check it out when I get the chance. Best of luck on the IndiePub contest.

What sort of environment is the company you're interning at (if you can say)? I'm always curious how smaller indie devs operate to keep their costs down.

Well my dev guy is in Orlando Florida. I'm working with him across the internet. I do the sprites in flash and update him regularly. He pretty much does everything else himself. He has another lead artist who did all the original concept art and the opening cinematic seen on that youtube clip, and one other programmer, but that's about it. This is the website for Bad Pilcrow http://www.badpilcrow.com/index.php?action=vspd

It's funny looking back at some of the older games, (even major ones like sonic the hedgehog), from the 80s and 90s and seeing they were fundamentally only made by like 5 people

Also I'm liking this software thread trend I'm seeing on the CC here.

Okay, yeah, my bad, there are more levels after 5.  I guess I accidentally hit down before I pressed enter when I was at the level complete screen.  I'll give you more feedback when I finish the rest of the levels.

It happened again.  When I played level 16, I pressed next and then it played level 16 again.  However, after I pressed Next after that it went to level 17.

Are you saying that the game shuts down when you pick one of the options on this screen? Or does it go to the main menu?

I'm saying I'll click next and it'll replay the level I just finished, as if I clicked the replay button.  Then, when I beat it again and click next, it'll move on to the next level.
