Reboots can bring new life to a dying/dead series when done right, as can sequels.
Remakes have also proven they can be quite good when done right. (See: Bionic Commando Rearmed)
My question to you is, what games or game series do you think hold a lot of potential for a remake/reboot/sequel on today's systems? Also, give reasons as to why.
I'll list a few of mine here and I'll post more when I think of them.
Suikoden (Reboot)
I think Suikoden holds enormous potential for a reboot on today's systems. The first Suikoden on the PS1 was great for its time. I've only played the first one but I heard 2 and 3 were good followups, 4 sucked, and 5 was better than 4 but not as good as the first three.
Even if you weren't a fan of the original, you've got to admit the concepts for the game hold a lot of promise even by today's standards. It was a long fantasy RPG, with a 6 man party battle system. What really set it apart from the other popular RPGs at the time, was the fact that you had a castle. In that castle you had up to 108 characters (that you could recruit throughout the course of the game's story) and any 6 of them (one has to be your main character) can be in your party at any given time. In your castle, if my memory serves correct, you could shop and upgrade things, among other things. Aside from the 108 characters in your castle, you had an army. This army was used for large scale battles. I think a modern day reboot of the Suikoden series using these things to their full potential on the 360/PS3/PC could be amazing, and I would buy it in a heartbeat.
If the original game intrigues you, you can get it on PSN for $6 I believe.
Jet Set Radio series (Sequel)
Not a sequel that continues any story. There really isn't a story to continue. I don't think it needs a reboot though, because the core gameplay was great. Jet Set Radio (Jet Grind Radio in North America) was the first Cel Shaded game ever. (I believe it was the first at least) and its gameplay was very unique, unlike anything I had ever played before. Jet Set Radio Future took everything good about the first game and improved it, got rid of the time limits on each level, and overall just made the series more fun. Unfortunately, Jet Set Radio was released for the Dreamcast, and therefore never really sold too much. Even more unfortunately, its sequel didn't sell well and was overlooked, despite being better than the first game. They canned the planned Wii sequel and we have never heard anything about it since. Jet Set was a whole lot of fun and I think it deserves another shot on today's consoles. However, with the lack up financial success of the first two games, I don't think it's likely we'll be seeing this series any time soon, which is a shame.
Final Fantasy Tactics (Reboot)
The original Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1 was my favorite Strategy-RPG ever, despite the bad translating. The gameplay was so much fun, the job system was fantastic, everything about the game besides the bad translating was pure SRPG excellence. Naturally, I really like its PSP Remake, Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. It was esentially unchanged from the first game only with a completely rewritten (read: well written) script, and a few extra job classes and missions. Liking the original and its remake so much, I turned to the Nintendo handheld exclusive series: Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. These were pretty disappointing. Not only was the story no longer a medieval fantasy, it was about a few kids who got trapped in a book containing the Final Fantasy world. I didn't really care for it, and the race specific classes, weapon based skill learning, and unnecessary battle rules/judging system made for an experience that was still good, but not as good as the original. I want a Reboot of the series in the same vein as the original. Mostly everything the advance series added made the game worse. I don't want people warping from the real world to a final fantasy word, I want a pure medieval fantasy setting. I don't want a completely unnecessary and arbitrary battle rules judge, and I want a better skill learning system than that 'use-a-weapon-learn-the-weapon's-skill' system. I just want a reboot that returns the series to its roots and improves upon it, rather than making it worse.
I'll post more later when I have more time.
Also, they gave us that one trailer for the Mechwarrior reboot back in 2009 and never said anything about it ever again. Mechwarrior was one of my favorite PC game series back when I was a kid, and it needs to come back. It hasn't been reported as canceled so it's still coming. I just want it to come sooner.
James Pond (Reboot)
I just remember spending countless hours as a kid playing James Pond 3 on the Sega Genesis and I would love to see it come back with some new graphics. There's not really much to elaborate on, but here's some info on the original games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Pond_3:_Operation_Starfish
Cool Spot
Because this game was fucking great.

Also, I bet someone is going to say Battletoads in this thread.[/size]
After Diablo III comes out they should remake it but do a good job this time.
A new Darkstalkers game would be pretty rad. I think it might happen too because a lot of people have been wanting it and Capcom tends to listen to their fans and loves making sequels. The fighting game market is sort of flooded right now though...
I'd like to see a remake of Mother 1, because it's terrible and I can't play it. Making NEW mother games would be bad though, it should stay a trilogy.
I REALLY want to see a new Ghosts n Goblins game for console. Maybe a downloadable one?
Honestly it's hard to think of anything because the best games almost always get remakes and sequels these days. A year ago I would have said "donkey kong country" or "Marvel vs Capcom" but I can't any more. Sometimes I love the game industry :)

i owned a dreamcast and this, crazy taxi, and powerstone were the only games i played
Conker sequel, won't happen though because Rare sucks ass now.
A real Chrono Trigger sequel would be good, not saying Chrono Cross was bad or anything, it just wasn't the original :|
Several have been striking off my wish list the past years (oh man Punch-Out!!, Donkey Kong Country? KID ICARUS?!)
Stillllll, let's see...
Psychonauts 2
Many say that the end of Psychonauts was wrapped enough, but I am REALLY curious about this psychic agency and the other cases they have to confront. Razputin is a kid with a lot of future, but I really want to see some of it.
A new canon Pokemon game.
Yeah, you know something that fucking ruled about Pokemon G/S/C? It was canon. We saw how everything changed from three years ago on Kanto. The trainers themselves became stronger and you even had a battle with the freaking previous trainer. There are rumors that say the first gym leader of Sinnoh is an older rival (Silver), but I dunno if it's true. So yeah, a new Pokemon game where the tracks of the past are actually visible.
A new Donkey Kong game that ties the mystery of Donkey Kong Jr.
I will say it, as much DKC ruled, Rare completely fucked the deal of DK and DK Jr. It is commonly accepted that Cranky is the old DK and that Donkey Kong is really Jr. But it was originally planned that Diddy was going to be Jr., and gorillas =/= chimpanzees, so yeah, odd.
[/bigfuckingnerd]
Also, yeah, Mother/Earthbound Zero is hard as fuck. Maybe just a remake/re-release of the trilogy.
oh and a few days ago i was thinking about a new Mach Rider game, because I am that much of a big Nintendo nerd fanboy piece of shit

Agree with you hardcore

Diddy's not a chimpanzee, he's a
human monkey, he has a tail.
Go ahead and call me a nerd and/or a Japanophile for saying this, but I want a sequel for The World Ends With You. Yes, it's a JRPG, but it was well-written and fun. I loved the gameplay, where you fight on both screens at the same time (and they set it up so that at the beginning you can ignore it if it is too overwhelming, but as you get more skilled it is better to set it to manual than to leave it on autopilot). The Item system was fun, as was collecting/evolving pins. It also had some great mechanics that should be incorporated into more games, such as chapter select (after you beat the game, you can go back to a certain segment and replay it with your current items and setup, with also cool things added in) and adjustable difficulty and levels (harder difficulty means better drops, and lower levels mean higher drop chances. You can adjust this between battles). I'm surprised there isn't a sequel/spinoff, it was pretty popular, and one of the few games I've actually gone and gotten 100% completion.

Well, ok but he aint a gorilla
also that link you posted felt 20 times more racist than it was supposed to be haha

Lol yeah, whoops.
EDIT: I forgot about Warlords 2. Warlords 2 will always be at the very top of my list. Don't change the way the game plays at all, just bring the game to the 21st century (and on digital platforms like Steam, iPhone, Xbox) please. You tried to mess with the formula in Warlords 3 and it didn't work as well. Now that the (excellent) Puzzle Quest series has kept your company alive, please get to work on this. Don't try to give everything full animations, either. The game needs to play lightning quick accommodate for the vast amount of tactical decisions that have to be made each turn.
[u2]8LKhqR8TPIM[/u2]
Jet Set Radio is top of my list. JSRF is amazing, but it could use an HD treatment, a couple more extra-imaginative levels, and an expanded soundtrack. Sega needs to make this happen. If I was their CEO, this would be my top priority.
Alundra is number 2. It got a terrible sequel that killed the series prematurely, and the series looks like it got lost in 'game rights' hell (Sony has the rights to it and decided not to do anything with it in 10 years besides release the first game as a PSOne classic in Japan only). The first game is my favorite game on the PSOne, though, and my favorite Zelda-style game.
Dynasty Warriors. The game is still getting releases like crazy, but they do almost nothing to it year after year. They should take a year or two break and really work on improving the technology in it to make it a much more dynamic and exciting experience, as what they have right now is very samey and hasn't changed significantly since Dynasty Warriors 3 (Empires doesn't count; its battles are more bland and diluted than the original games).
Enclave(Xbox) - got lost in game rights hell also. It was published by a company that went under, and then it got stuck in limbo somewhere. Starbreeze was working on a sequel to it and was forced to can it, also. Although if it didn't happen we might not have gotten an awesome Chronicles of Riddick, so I guess that's a fair trade-off. I still want to see it redone, though.
Deathrow(Xbox) - didn't sell that well, and I think the company went under. Who knows who owns the rights to the series now, and even if they did, they probably wouldn't bother trying to reboot it. I think now that the Xbox is a popular system (and now that Xbox Live exists; it didn't when that game came out) it would find a good audience on the 360.
DKC used to be on my list but it looks like it doesn't need to be now.
Yoshi's Island could use a straight sequel. There's Yoshi's Island DS, and that game's okay, but I don't like how they added the baby management system. That was stupid and distracted from the rest of the game. The levels don't feel as well designed or epic, either. I love the original, I just would like more levels.

Couldn't agree with you more. Alunda is fantastic.
Zone of the EndersWe need a new sequel already! 2nd runner was way too short and Kojima needs to focus his talents on something besides Metal Gear for awhile. I recently bought the 2 games off of ebay and have plowed through both of them. A bit repetitive but by and large, ZoE is a fucking awesome Mech Fighting series. A new next-gen version needs to happen now.
Shining ForceA new Camelot developed sequel would be fantastic. It'll never happen but it would be extremely cool to see. 1&2 on the genesis were some of my favorite games. Bought Shinging Force III (pt1) not too terribly long ago and enjoyed it immensely. It's a shame part 2 & 3 were never released stateside. Would almost recommend buying a Saturn for it if it wasn't so dated. I guess there's Golden Sun to keep me happy however..
Super MetroidREMAKE FOR SURE. Would like to see HD, Newer presentation/(if done right) updated graphics, orchestrated music, keep the same style(first person might be neat but nah) and maybe a prequel mission to fusion after the game is finished and the credits are done rolling. Shadow Complex comes close but it's definitely no Super Metroid. Favorite SNES game by and far.
If I think of others i'll edit this post.

Yeah but they made Diddy not Jr. so the continuity didn't get fucked over. The mystery of DK junior is that he grew up and became Donkey Kong. Diddy's just some annoying friend of his.
Mutant League Football (reboot)
Mother (sequel)
Dynamite Headdy (HD remake)

Second Sight: Holy shit this game made me like the Gamecube again. Psychic powers, violent outbursts of rage, and a simple story line that worked well for it. I'd love to see what happened to John after him and his "children" ate that guy
Quote from: Bulba;1776600You haven't even played it :grumpy:
I've seen the trailers and I can tell you that I don't like the graphics. Diablo should never look like WoW.
I want a 3d remake of the orignal Zelda just to see it
I'd also like a console version of Chinatown Wars with the whole 3D platforming.
Freakin' Pikmin. I need to throw cute plants. (On the topic of throwing cute things, I want Line Attack Heroes (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/wiiware/wc8j/index.html) to come to the States).
I would LOVE a sequel to Mechinarium. The other games by this company, although they have won awards for being "wonderful", didn't have the same feel to them--Mechinarium really felt uniquely challenging and thoughtful, and everything was very... cohesive, I guess.
Vagrant Story, whether it be a remake or a sequel, I just want to see that game get some more recognition. It was absolutely splendid, the weapon customization was RIDICULOUS. However, it was quite shorter than I had wanted.
I still have yet to play Sin & Punishment 2, but I've been waiting for that sequel for quite some time now, and I'm hoping that lives up to it's predecessor.
I also am hoping my dreams come true when the new Donkey Kong Country comes out.
Also: also: it would be nice to have a successful spin-off of the Ace Attorney series. I want Maya back. :[

Do not even look remotely similar.
Diablo III and WoW are completely different games with much different graphical styles.
Enough about that in my thread though, this is not the "whine about Diablo 3" thread.

Agreed, that game was fucking fantastic. But didn't the spirit realm get destroyed at the end of that? I don't see how a sequel would "work".
Plus, I seem to remember the game not having very good sales, due to widespread pirating.

HD Remake of Pendemonium! for PS1.

The ending was ambiguous, but it seems to imply that the spirit realm survived. Also, it was also implied that Shibuya wasn't the only underground realm, so they could also do a spinoff set in some other city.

It sold well in North America as far as I can remember.

I haven't played the first one but I always wanted to.
But it doesn't look like it's happening anytime soon :(
The Elder Scrolls (Sequel)
Metal Gear 1 & 2 (Remake)
Timesplitters (Sequel)
Warhawk (Sequel)
The PS3 already got a Warhawk reboot a few years ago. It ended up being a great multiplayer title that I really like. But the game was released in '07, and after three years its player activity has certainly declined. I think it's about time for a sequel. The controls on the warhawks are some of the best flight controls I've experienced to this day, so those really don't need to be tampered with. But I'd still like to see them make a new game with new and improved content, better graphics and physics, more game modes, more/new weapons and maybe a class based weapon system. Also, split screen multiplayer available on all servers instead of just unranked servers would be great. Maybe this time around they could include a single player/co-op campaign or at least some co-op game modes. The PS3 reboot of the series showed that Warhawk could be brought to today's consoles and work well. But it's been three years now, and I would like more.
WaveRace (Sequel)
WaveRace BlueStorm had really impressive graphics for its time, if Nintendo releases an HD console they should make one so the water looks really amazing again.
Ghosts 'n' Ghouls (Sequel/Reboot)
It's been a long time since Arthur had another entry of the ridiculously hard games of Ghosts N Ghouls. A new one in HD or for DS or PSP would be really cool.
Mega Man Legends (Sequel)
Long due for many fans, there are hints that say they could be working on this now.
Drill Dozer (sequel)
This game was pretty darn good, but it had so many plot holes in the story that it felt intentional so they would fill them on a sequel that never came.
Quote from: dill weed;1776784Giygas is dead, pokey is stuck in an unbreakable orb for all time, the world is saved for good, and the series never reuses playable characters, so they couldn't have a sequel without fucking up the story unless they started a completely new plot line with no connection to the last one. Actually that is a very good reason for not having a new Mother game. I'm going to have to agree with ya.
Anybody up for some Zone of the Enders or Blast Corps? Or maybe some Chrono Trigger?
