Title: The Elder Scrolls V - SKYRIM Megathread
Post by: WrenchClock on August 17, 2010, 06:19:43 AM
Holy shit there's been some news!
Taking this from uesp.net
QuoteThe only important news to come out of QuakeCon so far this year is a statement from Todd Howard that Bethesda has a new project in development (http://www.vg247.com/2010/08/13/bethesda-confirms-new-project-in-development/) and that it has been in development for two years.

Previous rumors had suggested that a new installment of The Elder Scrolls would be announced at QuakeCon, which finishes on Sunday, August 15 this year. The last installment of the series, Oblivion was released over four years ago, so a new game is well overdue.

UPDATE: In a EuroGamer interview (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-08-16-bethesdas-todd-howard-interview) released on 16 August, Todd Howard gives a few more details. "One thing I can say is that from when you first hear about it to when it's out will be the shortest it's been for us. It's pretty far along. When we show it, we want to show a lot, because there's a lot of game there to play right now.

"You know, if Pete Hines came in and said, "I want you to show it," I'd be like, "Okay, I'm ready to show it." But we've just decided for now not to yet."

ngghhhh i really hope they show it soon, and it better not be an MMO. I'm pumped!

I hope they use a better engine then the one they used for Oblivion. I tried to go back to that game over the summer and the character models are creepy as fuck.

I mean yeah back in 2006 it was amazing, not so much today.

I they don't use a new engine I will mail anthrax to the whole development team. But I know they will so I won't have to worry about how to buy deadly viruses.

Also I hope they bring back the level of complexity i felt in TES III but not in IV.

Also yeah it better not be an MMO

Sounds awesome! I really enjoyed played Morrowind, not as much as I did Oblivion but I'm greatly looking forward to TESV. Also maybe a new TES Construction Set will be released. If so I think I'd be willing to invest some monez into getting it.

Never played morrowind, but I loved Oblivion and I'm usually not that big on RPGs. Can't waaaaaitt!

EDIT: Except for the main quest, that sucked.

Two things I really want in this game and that I need to really enjoy it

1 player
no leveling content

sadly bethesda has a hardon for leveling content these days for some fucking reason

I dont think Bethesda will take any major steps forward with this one in terms of the core RPG gameplay. It'd be nice if you couldn't survive a certain cave or fortress until you reached a certain level...

Monsters that level up with you is kinda lame.

Since there doesn't seem to be any more information, probably for a long time, why don't we talk about what we want to see in ESV?

I personally liked the simplified skill system in Oblivion because it meant less grinding and more versatility. You didn't just have to focus on one weapon FOREVER to be competent like Morrowind. I just hope they don't simplify it more. In the last game it was pretty much perfect IMO.

As I said I REALLY hope they back off on the leveling content.

I hope they have a new engine as somebody else already said.

I hope they make quicktravel harder or at least make the scenery interesting enough to make walking worthwhile. The limits of quicktravel in morrowind made me go out and explore more, and that added a lot of fun and immersion to the game and gave a sense of scale.

I hope the game has more topographical variety. Oblivion only had grassy plains, grassy plains with swamp-like features, grassy hills with a bunch of trees, and snowy mountains with nothing on them. They also had the "oblivion realm" but that place is such a piece of shit I prefer to pretend it doesn't exist.

that's all I got for now. I could go on but people won't read my post if it's too long

I want better spell management, more effects and uses, and better conjouration/enchanting. Also I want all the old armor pieces back, I liked having different gloves and vambraces and stuff. More interesting loot. Overhaul archery, make it faster. Let me shoot arrows like an elf not a barbarian that is most familiar with his axe. Needs to be one player, or SMALL (2-4) adventuring parties at most. No MMO crap! Yes more limited quick travel.

I would like to see an absence of load times, and actually show your character and npcs opening doors! And attacking while on horses would be nice, as would more realistic horses (red dead redemption-like horses would be aaaaaaaawesome)
Just streamlining the entire experience would be great so it feels less like a game.

yeah I thought the whole instanced towns thing was dumb. I would have gladly excepted lower quality graphics in towns if they could be more seamlessly merged with the environment.

You know you can create your own spells in Oblivion? You have complete freedom. The system let you have pretty much any effect you could want. I always assumed that the vendor spells are just for people doing some "on the side" spellcasting and people who want to make serious wizard characters where assumed to go for spell making at their first chance. Then again it was kind of a pain in the ass to get to the point where you could make spells...

I beat the mages guild quests and have never made a spell because of the mana costs... I always felt like I didn't have enough

Lot of oblivion bashing in this thread, I feel it needs to be pointed out oblivion WAS a very good game. It improved on Morrowind in many ways, especially combat. The physics engine was fun, but underutilized. It had lots of interesting characters and the quests were often very unique and unexpectedly funny at times (the mage quest where you had to get the ring from the bottom of the well was fucking genius). In fact I'd go so far as to say the sidequests in Oblivion are better than Morrowinds.

still though IMO morrowind > oblivion

Morrowind had a lot more stuff, whereas Oblivion had a bigger world with basically nothing in it. Closing an Oblivion gate always felt like a chore, but the memorable side quests are what made the game great.

Yeah, Oblivion's guilds were fantastic, I played through each quest tree.

I feel about the game like I feel about Hitman (of which I've also only played the most recent game). There's a lot of really, really, really good stuff there, and if they just clean it up, polish it, and rework it a little bit, it could be absolutely brilliant.

Oblivion definitely had some awesome quests. The problem is, once you've done every quest and plowed to the top of every guild, there's not much left to do aside from explore cave #394

Oblivion was definitely an amazing game, I found and did just about everything I possibly could with it (300+ hours worth of playtime between 3 different characters).

That being said, Oblivion did some things great and some things just plain awful. The main quest sticks out in my head as the best example.

I loved Oblivion so much. One thing they must improve on: The NPC conversation system. That needs an overhaul.

Also, the fact that if guards are like 100 feet away and they stop you from there, total BS.

Also, make sure there are no infinite cash/duplication bugs. When I find them, I can't help but use them. Then I feel bad about it.

For me, playing Morrowind is the following:

1: Start game
2: Call character "Faggot" or something.
3: Glitch through the outside wall before getting my papers stamped so I can't be arrested.
4: Use the colsole to unlock the guard's tower door.
5: Steal a sword and kill the guard, then take everything else.
6: Leave and run straight to Balmora
7: Use the console to get Uber powerful.
8: Kill everyone in Balmora
9: Get bored and quit.
10: Say to myself "I'll actually start a real game this time!" and go back to step 2.

Holy shit, there's more.
QuoteThe Bethesda Blog has been around for ages, but there's now a new podcast too (RSS). The first one includes an interview with id software's Tim Willits and Todd Howard, Executive Producer of Oblivion and several other TES games.

An interesting comment from Howard is that he has been writing "relatively the same type of game for a very long time ... consoles are powerful enough now that we can do some pretty deep, dynamic kind of games", which could be taken to suggest that the previous news that a new game is "ready to show" means the new game is TES V.

Howard also says that he and the Bethesda development team have been working on the game since they finished Fallout 3. He adds that they are "not ready to talk about it yet but we are really excited with how it looks. I mean, if we were forced to show it right now we'd be proud to show it, but we just don't feel the timing's quite right yet to show it." and "It's the game everybody in the team really wants to play."

anyway, fantastic news on the new engine. One thing that everybody failed to mention was those damn loading screens. They're all over Oblivion (and FO3/NV) and they're really annoying. It'd be awesome if I could walk into an INN seamlessly rather than having to stare at a load screen.

Eh, the soundtracks from Morrowind - Oblivion - Fallout 3 seemed too similar to me. At times I would swear that the background song I heard in Fallout 3 was taken straight out of Morrowind.

Well Jeremy Soule does the music for most online games (to be best of my knowledge), including Dark Allience & Guild Wars. So could it be possible that he also does the music for Fallout 3?

I enjoyed the depth of Morrowind, I was disappointed with the omission of certain Morrowind skills/things in oblivion such as polearms, throwing weapons, and unarmored. With that being said, I really enjoyed oblivion and I think the combat in oblivion was much better than morrowind, and overall made the experience more enjoyable. If they improve the combat more, re-add some of the things from morrowind like the stuff I mentioned, and especially if they make a new engine that could support stuff like dual wielding, ladders, and a better conversation system (I hated that persuasion wheel thing) I would buy The Elder Scrolls V in a heartbeat.

Well, as long as it's at least as good or better than Oblivion and Fallout 3, even if they keep using the same engine, I'll buy it anyway.

Hell yeah! I had no clue about this!
Morrowind wasn't my favorite, but the bloodmoon expansion made the whole game better.
As for Oblivion, I loved everything except how dull everything is.
Something about TES is just so unimaginative or dull/colorless, even with the Shivering Isles which was pretty trippy.
It's just like, the color palette or something...
I say the new installment should focus on making more things interactive, like when you're walking around and you see logs it would be pretty cool to cast your fire spell and have a camp fire.
NPC's could use more depth too, NPC's should vary more in age, the NPC's should vary in body shape and even though voice acting is probably really expensive, give the npcs more than 3 voices...

I think multiplayer would ruin the unique feel of TES series. Open world games were you're in a generic tolken fantasy setting and fight alongside other champions are a dime a dozen, but open world games designed specifically around the player being the ONE and ONLY chosen one, who with proper training more powerful than anyone else on the planet, are relatively rare. If it's a multiplayer you are instantly not the most powerful being, just another hero, only on par with many others in your realm.

At the highest levels of Morrowind you are LITERALLY more powerful than GODS. If there was a multiplayer TES that would mean that there are hundreds of random warriors who are more powerful than gods, and that's just fucking I'm a edgy teen

I am also a purist when it comes to TES being one-player. I think companies believing that EVERY game must have a form of multipayer no matter how slapdash is wrong. Once you introduce multiple players, you also introduce a whole host of new problems like loot sharing and balancing.

In my opinion Oblivion already did (or tried to) do away with the All-Powerful player with the enemies that scaled with your character. Granted, once you get to level 30 or something you can still trounce all the enemies, but even then my character still easily gets his ass whooped by a single ogre.

Yes, in all the Elder Scrolls games your character is The One or the Nerevarine, but I wouldn't mind a change-up to the formula. That's just personal preference though, so don't regard that as an argument.

Quote from: ButtplugClock;1800987I am also a purist when it comes to TES being one-player. I think companies believing that EVERY game must have a form of multipayer no matter how slapdash is wrong. Once you introduce multiple players, you also introduce a whole host of new problems like loot sharing and balancing.
I can understand that, I thought the multiplayer in Metal Gear Solid 4 (or 3, but I never played Subsistence) was completely unnecessary and shoe-horned in.

However, whenever I played Metal Gear Solid I don't play it thinking "Man, I wish I was playing this with friends."

When I play The Elder Scrolls (or Fallout 3), I think that.

This is just preference, though, and I can understand why you wouldn't want it to have multiplayer. If it turns out it's not in the game, I won't think any less of it.  But, if they announce that it's going to have co-op I will grow such a boner, oh man.

This is the only game in the last 2-3 years that has made me want to buy a console.

It looks like it's from the gaming era where you couldn't always beat the games you bought.

Paraphrased from the magazine

QuoteMelee combat is very revamped. Expanded move sets including shield bashing and finishing moves. It's heavily based on timing and the offense defense back & forth. Common "Cheap tactics" such as back pedaling have been nerfed. Dual wielding isn't just a nice option, it's integral to the gameplay. You can assign any combination of weapons, shields, or spells to either of the two hands. (e.g. a mage can equip a different spell in each hand and go to town.) You weapon combinations will play a big role to how effective you are and how quickly particular skills increase.

Bows have longer load and fire times, but dramatically increased damage to make it a good weapon for stealth characters.

The class sytem (which specializes your skills) has been replaced with a perk system similar to fallout. You choose which skills to upgrade yourself to specialization is at your own disgretion.

5 schools of magic, mysticism is gone and it's spells are dispersed to the other schools of magic. Spell number is similar or greater than Oblivion.

I'm glad they got rid of mysticism because that school was fucking ass and never worth leveling up

EDIT: Everything in the article summarized nicely

I think the stat screen is overwrought

Any word on if they will still use the boring armor system from TES4?

The more I look at it the more I'm glad they got rid of Mysticism. I mean, seriously, reflecting damage, telekineses, soultrap, detect, and absorb spells in the same group? What the hell were they thinking? Where's the common thread?

Hell, a good half of Mysticism spells would make far more sense in Alteration

The recap got me excited in some sense but I got the feeling that perhaps they're dumbing it down a little bit...

whatever, still excited. Those screens look pretty damn good.

Daggerfall was pathetic, as far as I am concerned the last game Bethesda made was TES: Arena.

New spell like ability that every character has, known as "dragon shout". It's collectable powerup attacks that you gain by killing dragons, doing a side questline, or just discover with exploration. They're used as somewhat of a "collection" mechanic.

I'm sure the menu will be alright. Also:

Quote* Before Skyrim development started, Bethesda considered to wait for the next generation of consoles. Instead, they chose to reboot the visuals and gameplay and rewrite the engine (now called Creation Engine).
    * The province of Skyrim is about the size of Cyrodiil. Thereââ,¬â,,¢s five big cities and at least 130 dungeons and other points of interest. Skyrim is inhabited by Nords and dwarves.
    * Your character Dragonborn has a dragon soul, which allows you to use dragon shouts. Dragon shouts can be learned by reading them from walls and consist of up to three words, the shouts will get more powerful when you learn more words. Youââ,¬â,,¢ll meet dragons regularly while playing Skyrim.
    * Unlike Oblivion, Skyrimââ,¬â,,¢s main quest isnââ,¬â,,¢t featured by huge hell gates in the landscape. Instead, there is a less obvious division between main and side quests. Thereââ,¬â,,¢s ââ,¬Å"hundreds of hoursââ,¬Â of quests in Skyrim, the main quest is twenty hours.
    * Enemies donââ,¬â,,¢t level endlessly with you anymore. The moment you enter a dungeon, the level of the enemies in it is fixed at your level at that time.
    * Dungeons feature more puzzles and booby traps than in Oblivion.
    * Active blocking means that melee gets more interesting to play. All melee weapons have special perks (Fallout-style).
    * Skyrim is still meant to play in first person view, but third person view should now look a lot better.
    * The interface shows every inventory item in 3D.
    * Thereââ,¬â,,¢s eighteen skills, divided in warrior, thief and mage categories. You can mix and match them in the gameââ,¬â,,¢s nebula skill interface.

Todd Howard interview:

    * Every attack can be done from stealth, but some are more effective. Some have special animations too.
    * Graphically, Bethesda are trying to minimise popup and to make the graphics look the same across all platforms (apart from the pc versionââ,¬â,,¢s higher resolution and AA settings). Compared to Oblivion, they want to improve the faces and animations.
    * No more Speedtree for foliage, but hand made.
    * Bethesda looked at Kinect for Xbox 360, but decided it uses too much memory to implement it in Skyrim.
    * The pace at which they released dlc for Fallout was too high, so at this point theyââ,¬â,,¢d like to keep the expectations low.

Enchanting is back as a skill (I think it was in oblivion) along with blacksmithing, so we have that to look forward to. Alchemy is back too but as a stealth skill instead of a magic skill (even though that's I'm a edgy teen because the entire point of elder scrolls alchemy is harnessing and refining magic inherent in plants and animals, not making poison with base chemistry).

True that.

Sometimes it was fun just adding tiny details to make the spells look cooler like applying chameleon to a shock spell or adding a 1-damage/5 second duration fire spell to yourself while simultaneously summoning a dremora so you look all badass when summoning.

assuming those are even in there. Oblivion focused heavily on the Daedra as it made sense to the overall plot of the game but Skyrim is taking an entirely different approach. I'd be surprised if we even see Daedra in Skyrim (other then the ones that are Conjured) due to the planes of oblivion being forever sealed with the death of Martin Septim.

They've been in every TES since Daggerfall so it would be a shit move to cut them out. If anything there is more reason for shrine quests with the daedra trapped in oblivion. They'll need mortals to do their bidding. I'll even go as far to say that Mehrunes Dagon will probably have a shrine quest in Skyrim.

eh that was kinda vague I suppose.

What I meant was that I don't think they'll spend as much time on daedra shrine quests as they did in Oblivion. Cyrodiil is naturally going to have shrines of Daedra as the Ayleids worshiped the Daedra as opposed to the eight divines. When men drove the Ayleids out of Cyrodiil most of their culture, structures, and shrines remained.

Ayleids are not native to Skyrim, though interestingly enough I don't think they were native to the Vvardenfell province of Morrowind yet Azura has a shrine on the southeastern coast of the region...

I dont know. We'll see.

"Magnetism", fancy way to say extreme aim assist

They probably removed friendly fire because bethesda sucks too much at programming to make AI that doesn't blindly run through your line of fire.

The rest of it sounds very nice though. Especially the parts about the vendettas and the towns actually being different (rather than the same town over and over like in Oblivion)

the magentism feature makes sense to me

with a gun you can aim with x,y coordinates to a specific place

with a melee weapon you make a line across the screen, causing damage in a places you might not intend to

I have always been a big fan of Bethesda, I played every single Fallout (Even the shitty and inconsistent Bos and tactics), but I have never played Elder scrolls, my friend wants me to by Skyrim when it comes out. I always thought it would be like some WOW stuff, so I didn't get into it. If I buy skyrim, will I understand anything, or do I have to play through earlier games?

Bethesda has nothing to do with Fallout 1, Fallout 2, or Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel. They just bought the name and used it to make a mediocre TES clone with guns.

And then Obsidian came along and showed Bethesda that they actually still own Fallout.

The way I worded that was pretty confusing, im bad at late night and drunk posting. What I meant was I liked all the Fallouts, and I like what Bethesda did with the series when they got their Bethesdian hands on it, and they didn't screw all the time line up. And even if its a TES with guns, at least there are FUCKING LASER BEAMS. I mean looking at the earlier fallouts and the newer ones, were comparing turn based crap to actually fighting (cept Tactics),
Also, if you were trying to name all the Fallout games you missed Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. Obsidian screwed that game up bad, IMO. I think Obsidian made more mistakes with the series than Bethesda.

Black Isle made the only old fallout games that count. The tactics bullshit was just third party crap to cash in on the franchise. Black Isle is the indisputably the best RPG developer ever. Deal with it, nerds.

Obsidian was formed partially from people from Black Isles but for the most part is a new company as the MAJORITY of black isle went off to make some other company that went bankrupt in like a year. Saying Obsidian is just a renamed Black Isle is simply not true.

The only Fallout that Bethesda made was fallout 3, which was full of plot holes, removed all tactics from the game, and made the game obscenely linear for a fallout game. As many people say it's just oblivion with guns. I consider it a spinoff more than a real fallout game. New Vegas is the true successor.

Edit: anyway this is an TES thread, lets stop talking about how stupid Extinguisher is

Quote from: TequilaClock;1808862Ok let me be that guy saying, what is so great about The Elder Scrolls that everyone is going crazy about? I am not saying it sucks, I am just ignorant.

EDIT: byyyy looking at the trailer, I will admit, it does look pretty darn cool. So is it pretty much first person sandbox set in a mythologic land?

Basically it's a really addictive and immersive first person RPG series that normally takes place in expansive open worlds with nearly limitless quests, npcs, secrets and items to discover. It also has excellent lore that's really easy to get into.

If you're new to the series I would suggest giving Oblivion a try but if you're up to the challenge and can handle last gen graphics definitely give Morrowind a shot as well. Both games have numerous mods on PC but also handle pretty well on consoles. Cheap and easy to find nowadays.

Oh, and the music.. The fucking music..

Oblivion on the PS3 got me into the series. I brought Morrowind a while after and it's just as good, if a little harder.

The trailer on that site looks awesome, they really refined it from Oblivion's shoddy animation

@ Tequila:

You really get the feeling like no matter how much you do, you're nowhere near done the game, but you never lose that sense of progression, so it's like... Yeah. I played oblivion for almost a whole year and i stopped playing having not even finishing everything

If I can't get to the top of every single faction in this game I am going to be so MAD, bros. SO MAD.

I hope they don't put in any effort to their quests or writing, either. Nothing annoys me more than when a game forces me to stop pretending I'm doing whatever I want. Oblivion was perfect because I could pretend! I don't need the game to confirm any of my choices fuck you fuck games that think I should roleplay their way I roleplay MY way I ROLEPLAY SO THE GAME DOESN'T NEED TO TRY

AUUUUGGGGH DON'T RUIN THIS

Going to roleplay myself as a grandma who got herself into the wrong car and now finds herself on Silverstone, guys. FORZA AS GOOD AN RPG AS OBLIVION, I LOVE IT

Or do it like Fallout New Vegas where you don't have to choose a side with the factions until you decide to beat the game, and then the faction you choose helps determine the ending. And then you can reload an older save and try out the other endings. I'd be cool with that too.

I just watched the trailer again. This has probably been the most giddy I've been about a game coming out.

Quote from: PC GamerCreative director on The Elder Srolls V, Todd Howard, wants to bring Morrowindââ,¬â,,¢s ââ,¬Å"wonder of discoveryââ,¬Â to Skyrim. He admits that Oblivion lacked some of the imagination of its predecessor, but wants to ensure that the world of Skyrim ââ,¬Å"has its own unique culture.ââ,¬Â

Speaking to OXM about the world of Skyrim, Howard said ââ,¬Å"it should feel alien, kind of ââ,¬â,,¢stranger in a strange landââ,¬â,,¢ ââ,¬â€œ with familiar looking elements only rooting you early in the game.ââ,¬Â Howard likens the tone of Morrowind to that of being ââ,¬Å"an outsider.ââ,¬Â

ââ,¬Å"With Oblivion, weââ,¬â,,¢re dealing with the capital province, and we wanted to get back to the more classic Arena and Daggerfall feel of a fantasy world that felt more refined and welcoming, a place that you instantly understood. But in that, we sacrificed some of what made Morrowind special: the wonder of discovery.

ââ,¬Å"With Skyrim, weââ,¬â,,¢re trying to bring some of that back and walk the line between Morrowind and Oblivion. Where itââ,¬â,,¢s at first familiar looking, but has its own unique culture and spin on it.ââ,¬Â

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is due out on November 11 this year. If you havenââ,¬â,,¢t seen it already, itââ,¬â,,¢s well worth checking out the first Skyrim trailer.

I'm so ready for it to be November.

I'd assume he's supposed to, a lot of Morrowind seems to be based on Middle Eastern culture and architecture, just like Cyrodiil is inspired by European culture.

Edit: Most of the provinces in The Elder Scrolls are based on real world cultures and locations. Skyrim = Scandinavia, Cyrodiil = Western Europe, Morrowind = Middle East/Asia, Akavir= Japan

I always liked the "standard" because I could get in there and get creative, do something funny. There are countless memories of doing as many different combinations of actions, abilities, and item types to make my experiences unique each restart within the same exact universe. I expect only more of this, with at least twice as many new areas to explore. I guess it takes a little bit of creative thinking for games that give you lots of options for them to be really fun.

The fact that you're free to play out the story you want is something that I really like about these games, the problem is there's no way I would ever come up with a story set in a watered-down version of Middle Earth otherwise. I just don't see how you can be excited to discover stuff if you've seen it all in a hundred games and movies already.

Also for you Munglai: While the Elder Scrolls appears to be very "eastern fantasy", the lore definitely has it's own twists on the genre (Wood elves are cannibalistic, "Dwarves" were actually just a different technologically advanced race of elves that left behind huge steampunk ruins and haven't been seen again, the whole continent was colonized by Nords and Imperials I believe, and is a huge source of tension, and racism abounds.) Of course, most of this is subtext and not brought up in most of your conversations, but that's basically what our history is like anyway. And if THAT doesn't satisfy you I don't know what will.

Friend of mine got his copy early from play.com, disappointed I ordered it on Amazon. Also there was a demo in HMV so I spent half an hour playing it in my lunch break.
Guess how good it is.
It's fucking awesome.

Got this and just did my first quest (which took about an hour, long ass dungeon)

Combat feels pretty satisfying. Finishing moves, critical attacks, sneak attacks, blood splatters are all awesome. The first dungeon I went into (Golden Claw quest) was amazing! Hope the rest of the game is like this.

The game looks pretty damn good aside from the plantlife which still looks pretty oblivionish. I hear a lot of people complaining about textures but they haven't been bothering me any. Wish I had more time to play but I gotta get some sleep :/

Man steampunk is the most overplayed concept. I wish nerds wouldn't latch on to stuff so fucking hard, even the best ideas can only stand up to so much repetition.

See that sounds interesting. They should bring stuff like that into the foreground instead of just going BATTLE MAGE YONDER FROST DRAGON INTIMIDATING SHOUT all the time. Fantasy and sci-fi are interesting because they raise questions that don't show up in realistic storytelling. It's a shame to see that side of it drowned out by cliched cool shit.

I'll probably still give this game a shot though. It's got my attention gameplaywise at least.

Yeah that's why I liked the colonial aspect so much. Apparently that was really prevalent in Morrowind's story, I'm hoping it is in Skyrim's as well.

So I tried this thing where you put buckets over peoples heads and it becomes easier to steal things, and kill people undetected. Instead of what was supposed to happen (I kill somebody undetected with another in the room, and loot their shit) something else completely different happened. I killed the brother shopkeep, then the girl who has the bucket on her head somehow detected me. Here's where it gets weird. After I kill her, the brother comes back from the dead, attacks me, and then stops attacking me acting like nothing happened.

I've only killed the first dragon so far, which had assistance from town guards and some random lady-head-guard. IT was pretty easy, but the giants have lots of health and do ridiculous damage. So far they seem stronger than the first dragon, but IDK about the rest.

Yeah I do that too. I use archery for long range and then healing or warding and unarmed for close range. I'm also learning enchanting and conjuration because unarmed is kind of hard now that I've leveled up a lot. And also I sneak around and pick locks.

I really like being able to have skills in magic, fighting, and theif without any penalties.

Bows don't have the special kills, but they can get some serious boosts with sneak attacks and perks. My bowhunting khajiit can destroy people at far distances with a bow, and then when they get close I just do some conjuration

Also, I love how some of the guys have slight Danish accents, and the cat people have a slight accent, but everyone else just talks like a well spoken American, even the Redguards, who to me look like Muslim / north african influenced.

There are definitely some british accents in there too. I like the American accents though, it separates the Elder Scrolls from the generic Tolkein stuff.

I wouldn't mind starting a new character to join the stormcloaks instead of imperials and do a totally different build, but I'll be damned if I'm not terrified of saving over my character somehow. I've heard it's bugged to do so, but it could just be people accidentally overwriting their main saves like your friend.

It seems lame to complain about this game at all since I am enjoying it so much BUT-

I was walking around yesterday and ran into Talsgar (I think?) the wanderering Bard dude being attacked by a troll. Looked like he was on his last legs, I ran in there and smacked that bitch up. Thinking he might befriend me and give me something/unlock a quest, I blasted him with heal others. Next thing I know, he's drawing his sword and attacking me. Because he... interpreted my healing as an attack? Anyways, couldn't get him to calm down, ended up loading an old save because I'm trying to play role-play this character right. People should not get pissed off at you when you save their life and then heal them mmm'kay.

EDIT: Oh and this made me re-load my save too - I fast traveled to a little mining town I forget the name of that immediately gets attacked by a dragon. It's one of those annoying-ass ones that refuses to land on the ground. It finally does and I'm running around bashing it to bits - all of a sudden the owner of the town runs right in front of me and takes a mace to the back of the skull. Now he and the rest of the town are pissed at me, trying to kill me, meanwhile there's a FUCKING DRAGON behind them blowing fire at their stupid backs. Re-load saaave.

I also am very picky about the animations. I don't like how 90% of the animations are choppy as dogshit, and just completely unaligned with the actions. Its almost like there is no middle tween between animation steps, reminds me of Madden

So like ALL bethesda games, it's a decent game with lots of content and amazing mod support but its full of bugs and bad design choices

Luckily all the problems well be addressed by modders eventually, but it may take a while. We'll probably be getting 50 naked body mods before we get one that lets you kill the earl of windhelm

Quote from: BoomStick Clock;1876127the fighting mechanics for dual wielding are wonky as all fuck.

Dual wielding is entirely pointless unless you use the double attack every single time (both attack buttons at the same time). Power attack with two weapons should kill anything in the game in two hits unless your gear sucks

I was blowing my mind at how good the animation switching between the 8 directional running is, but then I tried it with walking and... ugg. The walking animations seriously look horrible. It was also really annoying to me how if you stand on stairs one of your feet just floats in the air and the other sinks through the stone of the steps. Dark souls could model standing on slopes and stairs correctly, why can't bethsda do it with 20 times their budget?
Title: The Elder Scrolls V - SKYRIM Megathread

I hate to be biased, but I really wish gaming companies would follow the steps of Blizzard and Infinity Ward. The reason I say this is if you look at the model animation ID's they dont do full model animations. They do regional action animations for different meshed limbs.

Example:

Grab a copy of WoW model Viewer, and then rip into the game files for WoW, you can view almost all the animations for a single skeleton rig. Mind you there are still a crap ton of animations that are not in there because they are sub-compacted in .ani files, or deep deep in the MPQ file and the ripped wont fully pull it all.

The animation sequences are built in doing IF, OR, XOR, WHILE at the same time, thus you can dance and jump and it will transition. Having this adds to the game.. where when you have something like Madden or Skyrim, an action happens it means jump to Keyframe X and it attempts to do a basic motion tween using a Shaped Distortion, thus making them look like retards.

Swapping engines isn't as easy as it sounds, you dont just drop a new engine into the game and it upgrades everything.

Most games, commercial that is, take 1-3 years to make from start to finish. Because of rapid prototyping and using premade engines, they are able to come out in about 1.3-1.5 as a standard release. But when they make sequels, you want to use alot of the same assets you used prior without having to reinvent the wheel, so your stuck on the same engine.

Its the same reason why CoD looks good but still feels the same, its not because it has tight controls, its because its on the same engine that the 1st one was. It was easier to rapidly develop and make the game using less money because of the fact that most of the assets were already generated.

Swapping over to iDtech5 from GameBroyo is equivalent to making a movie in flash, making awesome models, next after you did it I want you to make a sequal in 3dSM, but obviously I want it to have the same feel. I also want everything to be 2D not 3D so make sure you light it correctly.

It may not sound the same, but you have to look at now they are starting from scratch, building new tools, new custom scripts, going through the training, developing new modules, and they still have to pay out of pocket for the engine, where the Broyo engine is easier and can import the old assets and they can modify what they need. Sounds like $$$ which is what it almost always boils down to.

But they've been using the same broken engine for 10 years now. Sticking to what you know is one thing, but this is ridiculous. Even SOURCE isn't as old

edit: I suppose on the other hand Gamebryo has the advantage of being very easy to mod, so that way the fans can fix some of bethesdas constant fuckups.

edit: I suppose on the other hand Gamebryo has the advantage of being very easy to mod, so that way the fans can fix some of bethesdas constant fuckups.

The engine is far from broken, and the Source engine is a re-invention of an older engine, they just upped it. Valve created there own engine where Besthesda is still locked in to most likely a contract to continue using Gamebroyo until the lease is up.

Its a design choice, training choice and workflow choice. Simple things that are not included in GameBroyo for example would be jumping. The lack of physics engine forcing the flow of the HavoK or another engine to be used is a 'choice' by the developer. You have to look at alot of factors for people making decisions on games, if it worked once it will work again and don't fix what isn't broke.

They knew they could use the same old engine, they knew the engine was still worthy and could hold up to its name. If I am not mistaken RIFT used the Gamebroyo engine at one point... it might still and look how tight that game works. Mind you its major flaw is the .x factor of animation fractures. I already pointed out that animations in that engine is horrid but thats because of the way that .ani's are started and loaded, they are on fly vs preload like many other games. Thats a design choice, because loading other modules takes precedance over loading ani/cache's.

Theres always going to be issues with engines, heres an example. Duke Nukem Forever took FOREVER to come out. Most people hated it because the game ran on such an old ass graphics engine. That means the engine couldn't do alot. Not going to lie, I was impressed. I was salty about the game, but if you know anything about gaming engines and learn that, that game, runs off the same engine as Unreal 2, you will shit bricks! The amount of modifications needed to make that engine do 90% of what was done is nothing short of amazing. Althought the engine could not handle more than 3 baddies on screen at one time, or that smoke caused graphic lag, or animation's were hardlock repeats of key frames.... thats still impressive considering the old system was a 2D psuedo 3D doom style flat panel engine and they turned it into a qausi 3D voxel engine.

Honestly, considering how old gamebryo is, bethesda has done a lot with the current engine. Shit textures and wonky animations aside, Skyrim is their best looking game yet. The weather effects, faces, magic, third person perspective, and dragons/enemies all look pretty fantastic compared to both Obliv. and Fallout 3.

and anyway, who really cares about ladders and footprints in the snow? I don't.

I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert on making video games, especially compared to Cranberry who works in the industry, but the way I see it there are two possibilities:

either Gamebryo is a shit engine that they should stop using or bethesda is terrible at programming. Every game they ever release is full of an absurd amount of bugs and glitches, no ladders, clipping everywhere, bad animations, unrealistic physics, bad AI, pathing issues, and stupid restrictions like requiring every city to be enclosed in a wall.

About duke nukem, people dont hate that game because the engine is bad. They hate it because everything about it is bad.

Most of that stuff falls under the should have been beta tested theory of players. Its a funny concept when you have people that say "They should have beta tested this crap" and "They obviously didn't beta test this."

Most companies have a controlled group of beta testers for 2 reasons.

1. they know what they are looking for, are experianced with games, and beat the game fast so they can ensure that it hits the mark.
2. they are most of the time trusted so they don't leak plots/tips/games etc, ala GoW3.

When a paid beta tester plays the game, they usually have some sort of orientation and back fill as to whats going on with the controlled testing group. That being said they are expected to think like the developers that made the game and test that certain mechanic, not the entire game. A dry run of a level, a boss fight, fine tuning of spells and controls and mechanics.

Most if not always the game ships with bugs on purpose, some bugs just don't fix themselves, or the last build you had before it went gold was perfect and you changed a minute item which then some how gave you god powers in the game even though all you did was add a period at the end of sentance. The compiler was set up straight, the installer added some overhead when it installed, the compression format changed that value of 0 to a 1... simple dumb little tiny things that wont be caught. It happens. What alot of companies have started doing now is selective beta tests that are free and you are doing an NDA.

This takes me back to the controlled testing of Burning Crusade for WoW. During the development time frame of that while I was an MVP the Alpha of the game shifted enormously when it was in pre-beta. Everything you saw in the Beta of WoWBC was generated so late into the game that the F&F alpha we all had was no where near the beta. They decided because of this to have a controlled beta test group of 30,000 players. The idea which turned out to be correct is that not everyone plays the same. Not everyone gets it. Not everyone is going to follow the rules. Not everyone is going to obey the laws, and some people are just complete idiots and come up with some of the most idiotic ideas ever which become huge ground breaking things.

Heres a couple of my favorites *These are pulled from the Blizzard MVP boards under the Beta testing of Burning Crusade*

Quote-Critical
*Players can drink a mana potion of any type while facing the camera straight up and jump off a cliff creating the ability to walk on a clipped plane. (EXPLOITIVE) = FIXED 4/3/2005

-Critical
*Players are able to repair items log out and log back in with money being restored due to 5 minute rule. (EXPLOITIVE) = FIXED 4/19/2005

-Minor
*Players are able to wall walk still. (TERRAIN) = FIXED FUTURE PATCH 2.1

-IMMEDIATE
*Players are able to mind control other players and use the macro /debug pickupSpellByID(8291); allowing the creation of gold.

The reason I bring this up is that these were all controlled, by the controlled group. People figuring out simple errors. When they decided to have the OPEN beta test for WoTLK some of the most random set of bugs that players came up with happened. Some of the large ones:
Quote[DK]
Apparently players have gotten smart and figured out something we did not. It appears that players are going to graveyards to summon the ghoul as the spell takes a dead body and reanimates it. Something we did not think of was that when a player dies the body is auto transported to the graveyard. Players are spawning up to 255 ghouls (max units) on screen due to dead bodies.

[PRIEST]
Players are using Levitate to jump from Dalaran to IceCrown before its open.

As you can see, players think of shit beyond what the game developer inteded. This is why you cannot control test everything. Sometimes bugs are bugs are bugs and will happen no matter what you do.

This post is pretty excessively long. I mean, I read it and it was sort of interesting but thats well into "tl;dr" territory. You could have just said "It's impossible to properly beta test a game of this size and scope" and it would have gotten the same point across.

Anyway, to properly reply: the problems with bethesda games go above and beyond normal problems and glitches. Some of them, like dragons flying through mountains or the player getting killed by standing on a bucket, are so apparent and common that there's no way that it could have been missed by even a single beta tester playing through the game once. There's also the missing animations when changing walking directions, and being able to walk up nearly vertical cliff faces by walking sideways. Many quest lines also break seemingly at random. Do you know of any other game company which requires fan made patches on every one of their products in order for them to function properly? How do you explain them using the same engine for 10 years and STILL having basic problems like being able to walk on 90% angle cliffs?

3rd person attacking in the elder scrolls has always looked like shit/felt like shit and this game is no exception. i cant believe they would completely remove first person in an elder scrolls game. it baffles me

I've done this. I always pray for some kind of mind boggling discovery when I reach the edge, like they work in the edge of the world or there are giant sea monsters waiting to eat you, etc. There never is, but at least Skyrim is still beautiful throughout.

The actual full map for the game (viewable only via console commands) includes the entire continent of Tamriel, although in very minor detail. So hypothetically you could go south and reach Elsweyr, although it would require noclip and is probably super buggy. Going north just has nothing though. All the terrain up there is just randomly generated.

I am really really not into fantasy at all. I thought Skyrim was an amazing game because the fighting is fun, there's tons of cool areas to explore and only one or two quests sucked, though not terribly. The best thing about it you get to do everything however you want and the game doesn't ever force you to do something.

However, despite my hate for medieval fantasy, Skyrim shines alone for the adventuring/leveling of your character.

Elder Scrolls is pretty much the most generic fantasy ever. The farthest they ever got from generic was with Morrowind with their focus on the Tribunal Temple and the mystery of the dwemer (which IMO is one of the most interesting bits of backstory in videogame history). Skyrim is just Lord of the Rings with some norse stuff thrown in (which I dig, but it's still generic) plus lots and lots of dragons.

There's Orcs, there's elves, there's humans, there's giant spiders, trolls, giants, and wizards. There's even have Ainur and Maiar, renamed as Aedra and Daedra. Elder Scrolls is as Tolkien as you can get without getting sued by his estate. The only big difference is that ES is a higher magic setting.

EDIT: It occurs to me how nerdy it is that I know what both Ainur and Aedra are. Fuck.

The combat in Skyrim is vastly superior to other elder scrolls games. The only thing thats worse is that there's no magic customization, but only nerds used that anyway.

idk thor man it is pretty generic but its also kind of not

ive read a lot of lore (http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Main_Page) & history (http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:History) on uesp.net in the weeks anticipating oblivion/skyrim and there is a fucking ridiculous amount of backstory that dates back thousands of years before the first game and serves no purpose other than to be the history of tamriel. well i shouldnt say tamriel because it covers Nirn (the planet) and the entire elder scrolls physical universe and planes of oblivion and whatnot. it makes tolkien look lazy

its really easy to say "oh look magic elves and orcs how typical" rather than understand them for what they are in this particular game. im not going to get into it but all orcs and elves are from the same bloodline yadda yadda natural selection and daedric curses and magicka stuff

also theres that unique racial and political tension in the elder scrolls games which i really ahvent seen in any other fantasy setting

My problem with it is that none of it means anything. In sci-fi, world building always starts from the same point - reality. It's always going to have some kind of meaning to it because it's speculating about the world we all live in. With fantasy, pretty much everything starts from the world Tolkein invented decades ago and every bit of backstory they layer on top of it just takes it further away from reality. It pisses me off to see people spending so much time jizzing out lore when it doesn't have any purpose other than to sound kind of cool.

Post by: Thor on December 31, 2011, 02:24:11 AM
Yes there is a lot of backstory, but most of it is just copy pasted from Tolkien. For example, the origin of the Orcs in Elder Scrolls is that they are corrupted elves because their god got eaten by another god. Sounds like a unique spin on things right? Only it's not, because in LotR the origin of the first Orcs is that they're corrupted elves. Also like LotR the elves are timeless and magical and predate humans by a large amount of time. The only thing ES changed was splitting elves down the middle to make "magical elves" and "woodsy elves". They then did the unprecedented and copied Dungeons and Dragons instead of LotR and added Dark Elves, Catmen and Lizardmen.

Onto the next point: the geography of ES. You claim that there is a huge world compared to Middle Earth but really it's not. There is effectively only one continent in Nirn; the ones that aren't actually shown ingame have virtually no details given and exist only in name, similar to how the Undying Lands worked in LotR. Like Lord of the Rings everything is focused on one very small continent with very little information about everywhere else. Detail is so sketchy that nobody IRL even knows what lives on Akavir because the lore is inconsistent and alternates between claiming there's snake monsters that ate every man, vampires, or a race of men. Virtually nothing is known about Atmora and the other continent doesn't even exist any more. So effectively all of Nirn is one continent, so the "history of Nirn" is really just "the history of tamriel".

But what of the creation myth of Nirn? How the evil god Lorkhan tricked the Aedra into creating earth, and then being "killed" by them? Sounds an awful lot like when the evil god Melkor inspired the creation of Middle Earth by the Ainur and later became the enemy of all the gods. The multiple plains of existence which are home to gods idea is not from Tolkien, I'll give you that; instead it's from Dungeons and Dragons. However the idea of gods representing one aspect of reality and that being the source of their power IS from Tolkien.

In conclusion, the Elder Scrolls backstory is entirely unoriginal and mostly stolen from Tolkien and D&D

Quote from: Thor;1884726Yes there is a lot of backstory, but most of it is just copy pasted from Tolkien.

Pretty much every fantasy thing is lifted from Tolkien because he defined the genre. It's like saying every shooter is ripping off Doom.

That's beside the point. I'm saying that The Elder Scrolls backstory is incredibly generic and thus probably wouldn't be liked by Munglai. Whether or not it's a bad thing that it's generic wasn't what I was talking about. Although in the specific case of Munglai it obviously is.

That's different. New games build upon what Doom had and made it better. Games that rip off the Middle Earth setting invariably make it worse.

It's not though. Lots of tropes come from him but it is all actually rooted in folklore and religions.

The difference is that Tolkein read the folklore and religion and developed it into Middle Earth whereas 90% of modern fantasy writers read Tolkein and develop it into their own version.

Can the fantasy video game genre as a whole just stop jacking off to Tolkien and start stealing from the Gor novels. I want a game with the depth of Elder Scrolls where I can spend weeks leveling up my ability to mercilessly subjugate women. And instead of using Dungeons and Dragons for the RPG mechanics like every other fantasy game does they can adapt the 900 page F.A.T.A.L. rulebook.

Well, to be honest I'm one of the people who loved Earth defence force (which is a ridiculously low-budget cheesy pos according to many others). That game had nothing going for it except for the feel. Shitty story, shitty graphics, shitty animation but was amazingly fun through simplicity.

Skyrim isn't simple for sure, but at least for me, I can admire it for select aspects.

Just my opinion, anyway. If a bad story is enough to keep you away and you dislike general folklore, then I'd suggest you pass. It's really up to you, I say at least try it, it's the only way to find out by yourself.

They basically improved everything. The only thing I still think it is missing is polearms. The quick menu is great, although I wish it let you map weapon and.or armor configurations to the number keys.

Over the previous elder scroll games? Pretty much the ONLY thing they improved was combat and graphics. Everything else is worse. No spellmaking AT ALL, gimped enchanting, less kinds of armor, less kinds of weapons, less spells, less skills, less attributes, speech craft is now worthless, quests are more generic and samey, same shitty game engine they've been using since 2002, no Jump or Levitate, the fighters guild is now furries, ect. Game is worse than Morrowind and Oblivion IMO

Honestly I'm sick of Oblivion and Morrowind I have played them so much. Enchanting is kind of annoying but I personally never got into spellmaking. Other than that I like it, I found this group called the companions who I assume are like the fighters guild. They are way more interesting that the FG ever was.

They are furries.

Also I was mad that there was no way to kill them all and purge the heretics when I found out, which is what I wanted to do. Game needed a Silver Sword questline BADLY. The best you can do is cure them all of furryitus but then they get mad at you and you still can't kill them.
