Are the following philosophies on clock crew group dynamics improvements or not? If not, why not?
1. Independence from the outside. Not in a cultish "you may not communicate with the outside" or vice versa, but in more of a self-respectful way: in practice, it would mean a general silence regarding outside influences which do not bear any importance or influence on matters which began within.
Example: you can post a youtube video if it references an idea that began within the community, but if that video is simply something that's doing the rounds in general society, then it is regarded as irrelevant. Likewise for discussion of politics -- and possibly video games and music (these things could be discussed in the chat room or IM but not on the forum).
Why all this? What's the advantage? To keep the Clock Crew unemulsified with the greater society and in doing so promote independent, alternative thinking and originality, and to maintain the sense of humour, tradition and unique community experience as opposed to that of "just another forum".
And equally important, if not more important: to encourage a greater sense of mystique surrounding our individual clock personas. I think when our knowledge of one another is based more on our actions and creative output rather than on our general tastes and social prowess, we are bound to be much more appreciative of one another and this should result in less animosity and more group cohesion and collaboration.
If we keep a distance from eachother's personal lives -- using our clock characters as Venetian masks -- I think we are more likely to want to express ourselves through our animations. And to express ourselves more freely. Not only because it becomes one of the only modes of expression available to us in the group, but also because we drop the restrictions of our social self image.
Naturally we can still be friends on instant messaging or skype or what-have-you; the masks are for community-level interactions. It doesn't matter if you already know many clocks personally, as new members will fill the gaps of the illusion in time and lead to increased productivity and a group generated Clock Crew identity.
I think if this one-way cultural valve were installed, the rest would gradually fall into place.
2. Actually that's all for now.
TLDR: I don't want to see what you look like or hear about your favourite band. I'm more likely to like you based on your actions and creative outpourings. Which is certainly the case for every great or iconic clock I can think of -- they don't reveal an awful lot about themselves and we love them all the more for it.
ps i love you

I, being my lowly self, already adopt this sort of self-policy, for the most part. It makes sense that we shouldn't really just use these forums as another place to discuss our lives.
My life already sucks and I'd rather not discuss it on the internet.
Quote from: clammo;1782396an open letter about being more reclusive...wat?
It's not a rundown of what I ate today (but add me on facebook and find out!!), it's a relevant clock crew topic. It's not hypocritical according to the points I set out ktnx.
While I can agree on some of your points, I think that the posting of some of our personal affairs lets us relate better to one another and form a sense of community. That would be impossible if we were all just "roleplaying" our clock personas, which is almost what this would result in. While I would agree that more focus on the community rather than the external community would be nice, I don't think that cutting out what makes us as individuals would be a wise choice.
Feel free to rebut that if you'd like.
Quote from: clammo;1782398so i guess what youre saying is that we dont post pictures of our tattoos or videos of us going around town handing out fliers?
Good point -- I'm speaking with the benefit of hindsight! I dislike that version of me as much as you did and as much as you continue to do so even though I've changed (and now disclose less). Even more reason not to divulge personal information.

It's not roleplaying, it's just being more selective. In the earlier incarnations of the community, there seemed to be, for the most part, an unspoken feeling of what was cool to post and what was not. I don't think there was as much journal posting as there is now.
nostalgia edit: in fact, I recall clearly that whenever such a post were made, a moderator would usually post just the word "livejournal" and gas the thread.
But one thing that defines the Clock Crew and every group from NG, freedom. Restricting us this dramatically could cause utter chaos.

I don't entirely disagree with you Paranoid but dude, you
just joined, you don't really know all the machinations of things here yet. I sure as hell don't.

Touche, but online I am no good at acting like a new person should.
When I use the Clock Crew as my "General" forums, its hard not to post some stupid shit every now and again.
Especially since I weened myself off of being a NG "Regular", this is about my only place to go besides specialized game forums, which the term "General" can not be applied to.
this look p easy to me since i already go to like 5 different "general" forums
way to everyone talk about what you do in your external cc lives
Quote from: clockradioclock;1782466way to everyone talk about what you do in your external cc lives
yeah how dare you think we are interested in you, all we care about is your movies!!

But this is my only forum. D;
So let me get this straight, we are not talking about anything except ClockCrew material now?

Well considering Leek is no longer a staff member, and this whole letter is just his suggestion...
What shocks me the most is to see Leek's user name plain black.
no offense man but all i read was "wouldn't it be groovey if the CC took up fascism? because i sure think so."
eh... maybe but then people would post even less
Personally I would be in full support of deleting livejournal threads again.
There aren't really that many of them though, except in the spam forum
I suppose the "stupid animations" and "videos" threads count
LeekClock AKA: JimJonesClock ?
But yeah, this just seems like a bad idea. Sorry leek.
Should we all be like pro wrestlers, crafting identities and never dropping the kayfabe?
this is a horrible idea
Quote from: clammo;1782513you mean every single tequila thread?
*sitcom laugh track*
I sorta like where this is going... I'm not saying I support the idea fully, but I do like some of the points. Leek, I envision your idea as a bunch of hipsters silently sitting in a cafe rolling out pieces of their own "artistic expression" and snobbishly critiquing each others work. Not sure if that's what you were going for but that is the impression that I'm getting (I'm also on 27 sleepless hours so forgive me).
But you're right, CC users do need to develop their own identities. Part of what made the original CC fun was that everybody had their own spin on what was good material and what wasn't, yet all animations could still be housed under one roof. Now all CC flashes seem to follow this artsy-British humor-nonsensical-lol-internet format and try to compete with other CC flashes of the same format to see who can do it better. (Anybody know what I mean by that?) It's as if people have narrowed the CC down to one style and it feels like every user shits out basically the same cartoon over and over again. (No offense guys <3)
Part of this problem I do see as coming from outside sources. Where the old CC used to formulate ideas on the inside which would either grow into fads or just be successful as a single piece, it now seems like we draw on ideas from other sources of media and scramble condense them into a bunch of works similar in appearance both visually and in genere. I don't know what I'm saying, goodnight. I made a point in my head at least.

He's been for a good half-year now.

I'm confused, do you believe that's a good thing?

I don't agree at all. When I watch flash it always seems like people have very different styles and themes.
I hardly see what makes them british either.

How old are we talking here? As long as I've been here the CC's always been about spinning stuff we found in the internet into our own fads and in-jokes. And that was five years ago.
I don't know if it's just my ladyparts talking, but I want to know people beyond their Clock personas.
Knowing that someone's going through med school or a Catholic or just got out of a hellish relationship gives me a better appreciation of them, and so it gives me a better idea of where their artistic work is coming from.
With conversation, you get in-jokes. And movies come out of those in-jokes. By killing or limiting the conversation, you're limiting the movies.
Think of all the fodder that came out of Heinekin's drama, or Dr's Vodka Ice photos. If they hadn't been allowed to talk about personal shit (fake or not), we wouldn't have gotten to experience that, and the movies that followed.
And that would be a damn shame.
^ and you might have never gotten married with Chalk, I guess
clockcrew aint swag

Uggggggggggggggggh don't be so dumb
Also, I generally trust Leek with Crew stuff so I'm interested to see where this goes

So Leek is preaching individualism so you respond with your willingness to act like a lemming. That's intelligent.
Ivy's got it exactly right. How many movies wouldn't exist if we had not built the rapports we have and gotten to know each other the way we do? Would I even be subject to inclusion in any of my "friend's" movies if I wasn't the "gangsta kid with the Lil Wayne haircut?" How many stories can you come up with about a toaster pastry by itself?
As far as all clock movies starting to gravitate towards a common style... that's just preposterous. I can immediately tell a Munglai from a Keltron from a Zen Micro. If you can't... you're crazy.
There was a reason I sorta disagreed with Leek's OP (nothing personal, Leek META JOKES) but I didn't quite know why, but I think Ivysaur did a pretty good job of explaining it for me so I don't have to.
While I think Leek is sort of right in that we need to do more personalized artistic projects without copying what's popular or hip, I think satire is a big part of comedy (not in the "Vampires Sucks" kind of sense but in a more "making a valid point" sort of way), and people can get inspiration from any kind of outside influences. I think, though, we have the Youwhore forum and the General forum for that kind of stuff, though. In Youwhore we post anything that amuses us and in General we post the stuff that we draw inspiration from (as well as other threads).
Also, Leek, when I read your post I think of this thing I read that Benjamin Franklin wrote about himself. He set out a strict regiment of things he would cut out from his life that he thought he didn't absolutely need, including drinking and small-talk. In the end he gave up the idea.
Quote from: Pop-Tart Clock;1782608So Leek is preaching individualism so you respond with your willingness to act like a lemming. That's intelligent.
No.
There's a big difference between trusting someone who's done right by you in the past and blindly following. All I said was I'd be interested in seeing where it goes, not "YA GREAT PLAN. ALL WHO DISAGREE ARE FOOLS."
Quote from: clammo;1782614It's not going anywhere.
Every individual person has the ability to decide how much or how little they want to reveal about themselves here. We aren't going to police that.
Well yes of course, but that doesn't mean it won't go anywhere. I'm interested to see if people take this on board and if they do what results will come of it. Hopefully positive either way.
so today i slept a lot in school.
my favorite band is Kraftwerk
i like to eat chinese but i never have enough money to go out and get it
It's all about the balance really. I don't want general discussion to look like my facebook homepage, but a big majority of our comedy material comes from the kind of stuff we're talking about here.
I still get the idea of keeping things a bit more cryptic, I'd rather not know *everything* about most people here
yeah i gotta admit that whole habit some of you have where you refer to each other by name kinda pisses me off.
oh and when i see pictures of any of you.
I'm having difficulty articulating this, so I'll just be brief: I've previously lamented the loss of the clock crew's mystique and uniqueness and uhhhhhh.... heterodoxy?
but I'm pretty sure we crossed the rubicon on this, like... at least 6 years ago.
I mean, I'm down for whatever- I just don't see how we could put the genie back into the bottle even if everybody wanted to.

Does this make me super cool mysterious person?
