A lot of it was apparently made on an ipad. I'm up to the third track, and I'm digging it so far.
snore.
sounds just like their b-side eps. the sound is there, but there's no hook. there is not one hook on this album.
this is fifteen more of those 3-minute downbeat tracks of albarn talk-singing over underproduced drum loops, ambient noise, and farting brass sections. when you strip gorillaz of the strong vocal hooks, the raw sound isn't enough to carry an lp (especially with dan nakamura and danger mouse both out the door).
gorillaz is headed in the right direction when they're at most skirting the edges of pop (doncamatic was ok) but you don't trade hip-hop verses, memorable choruses, and the occasional drops of acoustic percussion or alt rock guitar for pretentious and frequently irritating experimental noise music without feeling some consequences.
you'd think after the singles off plastic beach underperformed so badly that EMI denied funding for the rhinestone eyes video, albarn would have gotten over his love affair with himself and dropped another clint eastwood or feel good inc like he's fully capable of doing.
if he starts falling into the brian wilson "search for a sound, fail to pop, nurse wounds, become a little bit crazier, repeat" pattern, I'm out.
Haven't heard it but I'll have to give it a listen. Hope it is better than plastic beach, and took down the preachiness a notch or two.

this is dumb and doesn't help my coincidence that it will be good.
old news yo.
its pretty good though
I did not like one song on this album, but for it being made on an iPad it was alright. All the songs were made on the road travelling from place to place so I doubted it would be brilliant, but it felt very dull and uninspiring.
Just listened to it and wasn't impressed. It was jammy but not in a interesting way, more like it was just hazy.
I think the album is good if you don't listen to it disappointed that it's not like the previous one or an advancement from that place. It's an experiment and there is merit in its intimacy and its honesty. I like Plastic Beach a lot too, but this album has its place. It's grown on me.
Here is a remix of Dirty Harry I heard on V-Sides. Really fuckin good. The chorus sounds like it could be a little louder and more clear, also I think it would have been better if he just cut the first 8 seconds, and cut or shortened the bit at the end. That's just me though.
