Or: A step closer to the nightmare of The Matrix.
I have been always fascinated to the idea of getting energy through metabolism and digestion. And this is a very grim and yet amazing approach towards this method of transforming energy.

QuoteYou're not going to like this. I didn't. Nobody I've shown it to has. But the designers who thought it up, James Auger and Jimmy Loizeau, are provocateurs, so they don't mind if you hate what they've done.
So here it is: meat-eating furniture.
Let's begin with their digital wall clock, which doesn't need a battery or a plug because it gets its energy from eating flies.
This carnivorous clock ("8 dead flies makes it work for about 12 days," says co-designer Professor Chris Melhuish, of Bristol Robotics) is just a prototype. It doesn't catch enough flies to power the motor on top and the digital clock. But this is just a first step.
What we have here is a belt. The white thing is a belt that's covered in honey. So it operates just like standard flypaper. Flies would be attracted to that honey. They'd land on the belt, get stuck, as you can see it is moving down very, very slowly, and right underneath here there's a blade and the blade scrapes off any insects that have become stuck to the honey. They fall into the microbial fuel cell underneath. And this is the device that turns that organic matter into electrical energy.
I know there's a notion (popular with the sci-fi crowd and especially with "singularity" enthusiasts) that one day machines are going to develop primitive minds of their own, learn how to repair themselves, copy themselves and find their own energy sources. At which point, they will become our evolutionary successors and rapidly evolve into some sort of uber-beings. I am privately wary of this idea, but Auger & Loizeau clearly find it intriguing to think about.

Did you know that scientists are making an Internet for robots so that the robots can upload how to do shit so that other robots can download and do them to learn new things (http://gizmodo.com/#!5755916/scientists-building-robots-an-internet-of-their-own)?
This is a thing that is happening.
did you know dogs can talk you just cant hear them
I'm really not sure about Biomass-fuelled technology. Although, as was said, trash/compost powered devices could be very useful
I wonder if it could be upgraded to take on things like dead rats, or other types of pests.
Quote from: AbsintheClock;1806729I wonder if it could be upgraded to take on things like dead rats, or other types of pests.
I don't see why not.
With all the HFCS and sugar we got, it won't be hard to lure them after all.
Well we all know that this stuff is already around for ages (just like solar energy n stuff) but the word need to be spread and our cash needs to be invested. The next fly powered clock i see will be bought.
I don't understand why we feel the need to develop AI when the possibility for human casualty is there. It's like we can't help but play with fire.
What we need is a real corpsegrinder to generate all the electricity. Should sell this idea to North Korea. I hear they have plenty of dead and half dead political prisoners. Dystopian future money here I come!

I was. I thought for sure we were all gonna die. I went ahead and got my dick wet in a cornfield one last time before they used it.
seriously though, watch this fellas

The History channel has been going down hill for the past couple of years but this was a really interesting program. Usually the whole dooms day thing doesn't appeal to me as most of it is just bullshit used to draw in viewers. That being said, I did enjoy this program and actually watched quite a bit of it mostly because of Michael Ruppert (of Collapse fame).
Obviously it's not as if any form of advanced AI is definitely going to attack but is it far fetched to believe that it very well could be a possibility?
We're gonna run out of oil long before we'd be able to make machines that intelligent.

yeah probably. If you guys haven't seen Collapse i'd suggest giving it a watch. It's on XBL marketplace.

for sure its also instant on netflix

Why in the living hell do we need advanced AI capable of doing everyday tasks which we can already perform ourselves? Sure we could use it in some practical way but making humanoid AI or advanced military AI is fucking stupid.
Clam, I know what this is really about.
You just want a robot sex companion! You perverted dick!

Quote from: clammo;1806983robotics are incredibly more efficient, cost less versus employee salary, and are incapable of being injured in workplace accidents
case and point: look at an automotive manufacturing plant.
Right, so why do we have too keep going is my point. In what way is creating advanced AI justified? What are its uses? What is the point? Would it be beneficial or detrimental? Why would we want to replace jobs with robots?
answer me this. oh wait you cant.
Nintendo the robots are being made because corporations are the ones that can pay for the development of them, and in the end not having to pay people is their primary goal since they like to hold on to the money they have. It doesn't make sense from a moral "give people jobs" standpoint but, really, corporations can give fuck-all about that shit.
Quote from: clammo;1807117i already answered all of these questions with the first sentence of the post you quoted
So then you agree that it's obviously detrimental to the human race to develop advanced AI?
My post came off sounding like I didn't advocate the advancement of technology, but I think as technology improves people can devote their time to more worthwhile things.
There are tons of jobs that don't need advanced AI to be replaced. Starbucks could be run by a manager and coffee machines. Factories only need human quality checkers.
Developing advanced AI to make complex decisions would only be necessary to replace managers and other workers whose decisions actually affect a company. We really don't need to replace these guys, because there aren't that many of them compared to easily replaceable mindless worker drones.
Edit: So in other words, Advanced AI is detrimental because the money it would cost to develop and test would not be worth the relatively small amount of managers' salaries it would replace, except maybe in the long run, but companies could really care less about "the long run".
Quote from: clammo;1807158*lists benefits to developing AI*
a benefit is machines replacing jobs? Oh ok.
Quote from: clammo;1807197i still dont see why people should just be handed jobs when there is a more cost efficient, less error prone, faster alternative out there. every person has the resources available to them to learn skills or knowledge that is required for most available jobs out there.
Quotetldr;
so forgive me if i have absolutely no sympathy for uneducated high school graduates who feel that they are entitled to jobs that meet their skill set, instead of gaining new skills to become qualified for one of the many jobs that are available.
You have no faith in humanity. Awesome. Only a sad sack of shit who sits on his computer all day would hold this view. I'd imagine this generalization fits you quite well.
If you are indeed suggesting that the broad spectrum of the current young adult population is undeserving of jobs then perhaps the answer isn't AI but a more sensible approach that challenges these social norms that you are suggesting exist. I am not saying however that there are not pockets of people our age who just don't give a fuck however I don't think the problem is unsolvable and in need of artificial replacement. I for one prefer to believe in human ingenuity (and by this I
don't mean developing advanced AI to replace jobs) rather then some kind of farcical existence where we give up on our own youth and submit to the will of our future robotic overlords...
