Terrorist is dead, world benefits.
I wasn't totally sure if it was true. But I just turned on CNN. Holy shit.
Quote from: RibsClock;1818498Apparently this is based on twitter rumors based on the fact that the President is holding a sudden press conference.
This is not sufficient basis for me to jump to conclusions.
I don't even know what's going on or how we got to the conclusions, so maybe my opinion is excluded but still... I thought he had been dead for much longer.
I've always held that he died back in '01. I'm gonna need pictures to believe it.
Osama Bin Laden is dead
You can thank me later.
CNN is all bonkers over this right now, and the prez is supposed to make a speech any time now. http://www.whitehouse.gov/live?utm_source=wh.gov&utm_medium=shorturl&utm_campaign=shorturl

Obama is so going to get re-elected.
Not that I'm giving him personal responsibility for it, it's just the whole Herbert Hoover-Great Depression effect I can see happening. Hoover wasn't directly responsible for the Great Depression, but he was president when it happened and it really screwed him and he ended up getting blamed for it.
I imagine the reverse happening with Obama, where it's totally awesome and he gets re-elected and I don't have to hear words coming out of Sarah Palin's stupid face hole for a couple of years (in a perfect world).

I was going to major in English before I realized it was a terrible idea, but I never actually took any classes for it.
I read a lot, but mostly I'm an amateur writer, and the vocabulary is an attribute that arose from my desire to textually communicate with clarity and concision without sacrificing brevity. I write a lot, but I
rewrite a lot more, and my vocabulary is something I strengthen, usually subconsciously, in order to improve my diction and phrasing. I have an unquenchable thirst to be understood.
I've spent hours ruminating on the effect not contracting "I'm" can have on verbal demeanor.
it's a private lunacy.

And you're right, being a religious nutter probably does play a big part in that.
Yeah I mean I get all that. But that's not really what I feel. if it helps, and this is not specifically directed at you, but all the people that are feeling kind of jaded and cynical and not really feeling the fireworks:
the word is "closure".
it's not that we've been thirsting viciously for the tall orange wizard's blood over close to a decade of bloody vengeance.
well, not all of us, anyway.
to put it as neutrally as I can manage,
bin laden represented humanity's deepest failures in the public conscience, and a lot of us were resigned to his presence forever looming as a grim symbol of unrestrained inhumanity.
he was where he was in part due to our actions during the cold war, and he hated us for our support of israel, and our military presence in saudi arabia- a failure of foreign policy and of diplomacy. he was a multimillionaire from inherited wealth- a failure of unchecked privilege. he believed he was killing in God's will, and hated us for not conforming to qutbism- a failure of religious belief.
clinton failed to capture him, a failure of military action. bush sat on the intelligence documents predicting the attack, a failure of national security.
then, over 10 agonizing years, bin laden remained a failure of our intelligence, and military prowess, a gangrenous hemorrhoid on the ass the world, a reminder not only of man's inhumanity to man, but our inability to set things right.
peripheral to that, 9/11 kicked off a terribly shitty decade.
war, recession, hurricanes, tsunamis, michael jackson died. I don't have to tell you, you lived it. the oughts sucked.
and now, it's like... we've put a button on all that.
and I know the war isn't over, and I know we need to be responsible and reasonable, and there are a lot of things we still need to worry about, and it's not going to be easy to get everybody's noses pointed in the same direction to really move forward, and I'm a big pollyandy douchebag that doesn't support capital punishment and thinks human life is sacred, but
something has ended here. something BAD.and we can be glad that it's over. I think we've earned that.

But that's exactly the thing. So many proud Christians too are reveling at God losing another soul to the devil and gosh darn it it's really hypocritical.
It's revenge. Pure and simple. How many people lost relatives in 9/11? How many people know people that lost relatives?
Of course they're happy. It's human nature. The man that they hold responsible for hurting people close to them is dead. Let them be happy. There's precious little to celebrate these days. Why cheat them of the joy of vengeance?

Real talk, whether or not you think he deserved to die there's no argument he had it coming. I would have liked to see him captured alive to rot in a cell for the rest of his life. I suppose this is probably the second best thing. I'm not complaining either. He was a terrible human being who did a lot of terrible shit. I believe very strongly in karma, and clearly Osama Bin Laden got what he deserved. Now that he's dead people are going to celebrate, and eventually they'll put him in the history book next to Hitler, Nero, and all the other misguided assholes in history.

It isn't that your statements are invalid. It's that they're irrelevant. Yeah, it's harmful. Did I ever say it wasn't? People are having a good time, and this is a rarity. In my mind, at least, fun is more valuable than human life.
EDIT: Fuck, that reads as horribly callous and borderline sociopathic. Horrible.
Look, what I'm trying to say is that it's rare for anyone to be honestly happy about something. Not contented, not complacent, happy. The cause of it is irrelevant. People are celebrating for once, and you're complaining about the morality of the celebrations? Fuck that.

All I know is our President is ice cold.
YO YOOO new insights from F U Clock the main man from Pakistan:
I think part of the reason I and other people feel happy about this is when it comes to Bin Laden specifically Americans have felt like they almost never do - the underdog. Because he's attacked us, made us feel weak and defenseless, and evaded capture for years. I think when insurgents win a skirmish against US soldiers they celebrate because they're the underdogs and they've managed to kill what to them are superhuman - better trained, better equipped soldiers. In a weird way I think to us Bin Laden because this inhuman symbolic evil thing that over the years turned kind of intangible. I honestly didn't think we'd ever catch him and based on a poll I read today, most people didn't. So I think that's where a lot of the celebration comes from. It feels like the rebels at the end of Star Wars. Which is weird considering we're the Empire.
Quote from: RadioTubeClock;1818746I'm sure quite a few of them have flown post 9/11. Going through an airport these days is definitely something that will not make you love your fellow man.

The taking of a life is the worst thing that can be done. The celebration of it is nothing but appalling and disgraceful for all involved. You have been told to love your friends and hate your enemies. How is that different from anyone else in the world? Do terrorists not love those that love them? Do they not hate those that hate them? We must strive to love all people that hate us, and hope that those who hate, those who wish death upon others, see that it is not the right way, see that the only good and just way is to live ones life in peace with his fellow man.
BTW I know that's all straight from Matthew corpsey I just wanna put that out there.
Quote from: RibsClock;1818741If you dislike my opinion on that point do feel at liberty to either explain logically the flaw in their reasoning or to agree to disagree.
Well, I think the main difference here is that we each have totally different values. You apparently place a lot of value on human life, regardless of the circumstances. Which I suppose I can respect.
I'm very relativistic when it comes to human life, however. And likewise, I'm relativistic when it comes to suffering. I think your view of things is overly black-and-white. After all, there is a significant difference between cheering at the death of a mastermind and actively torturing several soldiers for the fun of it. The mastermind orchestrates attacks; the soldiers are merely doing their jobs. That isn't even getting into the difference between torturing a person and merely celebrating the fact that they're no longer alive. The core drive behind it, seeing someone on the other side get hurt, may well be the same, but the consequences of the actions and the sources of satisfaction are very different.
Obviously, American soldiers torturing terrorists and suspected terrorists is just as horrible as when it happens the other way around. And just try to tell me that Iraqis wouldn't have been totally justified in cheering on the assassination of Bush. Or Cheney, I suppose.
I will admit that I was wrong about it being entirely based on vengeance. The closure aspect is important, and I think that to a lot of Americans the symbolic value of his death is what really
matters.To the rest, I think it's a case of
Kick The Son Of A Bitch.

hey look at that there was a whole second half to my post dealing with that exact issue incredible isn't it
I'm just glad the guy that caused us to go from peace time to war isn't able to cause any more trouble personally. I was just trying to get money for college, so he helped ruin the last 10 years of my life, albeit greed and prestige had a hand in it as well. Regardless, if he hadn't been born, there's a good chance I wouldn't have deployed 7 times.

this is what it's like to be on the staff
Quote from: Marlin Clock;1818763The taking of a life is the worst thing that can be done.
That's one of the biggest hypocrisies of supposedly "Christian" politicians. A true follower of Christ would, if attacked, do nothing. Or find some weird nation-wide means of turning the other cheek.
normative ethics and the political applications of it is such a fucking unwieldy topic

Actually, upon rereading your post, I sort of see your point, but I still say your morality is ridiculously oversimplistic. Killing someone and torturing them to death are two totally different actions with totally different implications. Killing is quick and to the point. It's functional. Torturing is the realm of complete monsters. And as I said in the section of my post that you continue to ignore, it doesn't matter which side the perpetrator is on. Torturing enemy soldiers-or worse, alleged enemy soldiers- is vile and despicable, and that doesn't change, whether it's Islamic extremists burning American troops to death in the desert or American troops waterboarding suspected terrorists in Gitmo.
Really, I don't see how my post could ever be construed as saying it's ok as long as Americans are doing it.

I don't think this is a matter of me being a dumbass as much as me being a bipolar cantankerous asshole who prefers a mutually antagonistic pissing contest over a civil debate.
That and I was chewing out some shithead anarchist on MSN over complaining about taxes instead of real acts of oppression like institutionalized torture. I've been stuck in that mindset of "YOU'RE COMPLETELY FULL OF SHIT AND HERE'S WHY" all day. So yeah, I've been a complete jackass, as I tend to do in debates, and for what it's worth I apologize. I do like and respect you, even though I still completely disagree with you on this subject.
And it's because I respect you that I'm disappointed in what you're doing. You're smarter than this. You have unfinished business here. Are you about to pussy out now, when you have the chance to completely humiliate your opponent? Because I don't mind being humiliated. Go ahead. Prove me wrong. Show us all what horrible monsters we've been. I'll wait. In the spirit of being a bipolar cantankerous asshole, I challenge you to finish what you've started.
