What a huge void of really dull, mediocre shit the world of videogames is. I just finished playing LA Noire and I thought that it was mostly really good. It had lots of problems but it was involving and unusual. Before that I think the last decent game I played was... Arkham Asylum maybe. I can't think of a game since then I thought was really worthwhile. The next game that looks worth investing any time is is Arkham City. That's pretty pathetic. A good game roughly every 6 months. Videogame companies need to get their shit together.
Oh, I didn't play Portal 2 yet but I'm sure it's got to be a pretty good since Valve are pretty much incapable of doing anything wrong.

I used to love fighting games but I'm a bit bored of them now. I've played all the games you mentioned there. Everything I haven't played in the top 10 lists just seem to be reiterations of Halo or Call of Duty.

Suggesting specific games is probably a bad idea since I have no idea what you like or what you've already played, but I assure you there ARE still good games out there, and they're still coming out. You just may have to do some research to separate the wheat from the chaff
Avoiding FPS games is a good way to expedite the process these days.

Thirding this, I've just finished Luigi's Mansion and I'm now just playing through God Hand on an emulator. These games own hard.

Well there's always Phoenix Wright if you liked the interrogation parts of LA Noire. I can't remember if you've played those or not.

GTA4 was dull as shit, Rockstar forgot it was supposed to be funny and all the reviewers were constantly going on about how it's "SO DEEP MAN"

I agree in that most games with a story are pretty poorly written and rarely explore areas other then good/evil.
I thought Red Dead Redemption was fantastic. I know people will say "Cowboy GTA" but I thought it had great writing and was in an interesting setting ie the transitional period between the 19th century to the 20th, leading to WW1 which has started by the end of the game.
Although it was glitchy as hell and added nothing new gameplay-wise, I loved Fallout New Vegas because it had a game based on political ideas, both for the factions and the player. The NCR want a democratic republic, The Legion want a Pax Romana, Mr House wants to be almost a demigod/dictator and New Vegas Independence can be achieved for either the idea of freedom and/or anarchy. And also the courier can choose their side based on personal ideals, personal gain or just for the hell of it. Depending on how involved you get when you play RPGs.
I think Agent, the next game from Rockstar, about espionage during the cold war will throw some new ideas for video games. Especially after the success of LA Noire.
My favorite game genre, the 3D adventure/platformer, is almost completely defunct. The only thing left of interest to me are physics experiments, which are isolated events by nature.

Diablo 2 is still a nice game. Have been playing it a couple of days, last month.
I've been playing Demon Souls as of late and that game is pretty fun, even if it is slow going and unforgiving as all hell.
Also I finally got Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and if you haven't played that yet I highly recommend it. It's fun and surprisingly deep.

gta 4 isnt the strongest R* sandbox but theres some things i still really like (ie the driving mechanics)
its still better than pretty much every other sandbox game not including rockstar
i think the problem with games nowadays is that they either try to be as visually pleasing as possible or that they're trying to have a story that is as elaborate as possible, without focusing on the game-play at all.
Kind of like a very well made DVD menu.

Rockstar sucks at it IMO. RDR was probably their best work and that's not saying much. After the initial WOW factor that GTA3 had, I could care less about sandbox games. Assassins creed does a decent job but after 2 and Brotherhood i'm kinda burnt out on the franchise. Infamous left a really bad taste in my mouth with its repetitive missions and boring story/setting.
I hear Infamous 2 is pretty good but I have yet to play it.
Imo rockstar doesnt make the best sandbox games. They're deep, rich and full of events, sure.
But personally nothing compares to a power-fantasy open world game ( prototype, infamous ).
Prototype, through it's flawed AI, general repetitiveness and terrible graphics still manages to shine by the fact that moving around NEVER once feels like a chore. Wanna get from point A to B? Fuck cars, jump over 3 streets and keep running at 60mph over any obstacle.
In my eyes, thats a true sandbox game
on the note of sandbox, Spider-Man 2 is still the best superhero game that-is-also-open-world ever. If you think of grinding through the story missions you'll miss out on just how much there is to find in the world. It's completely ridiculous how much they stuck into that game.
also, Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is a close contender. HULK HEADBUTT WHOOOSH KABOOOM SMASH RIP AND TEAR CAR BOXING GLOVES
but I haven't really been playing those games recently sadly, I've been catching up on old things people always praise, like Myst and Another World and KOTOR and Outcast and The Longest Journey et all

Infamous sucks though. All the side missions are the same 4 things over and over and no matter what you do it doesn't matter and there's no repercussions. At least in Rockstar games the cops come after you if you're a megatwat.
