I can sort of agree with Castle Crashers being the best, because the others that come to mind don't really strike me as better than it. That said, Castle Crashers is a product of the current console generation, and most good beat em up were from old arcades and older consoles. That certainly allowed for a much bigger game than most of the competition when making Castle Crashers.
I thought for years that the old X-Men arcade beat-em-up was amazing but that's partly because I only played it as a kid. It's still okay to fire up with friends from time to time, but I didn't realize until playing it early this year that you can beat the entire game, start to finish, in a half hour. This makes me question my memory on some other beat-em-ups like the Simpsons that I played in arcades as a kid too.
why isnt the first street fighter or mortal kombat in there

because they are fighting games not beat em up games.

Once again professional game reviewers prove they don't know shit about video games
Castle crashers wasn't even that good, especially compared to Turtles in Time and Battletoads
besides, Altered Beast is clearly the best beat em up of all times

If you're not sure if a game is hack n slash or beat em up it's probably both. It doesn't have to just be one or the other

Like of real variety in the characters, and art I didn't particularly care for. It might have just been that the person I was playing with was annoying (she was)

Here comes the Game Guru to save the day.
Out of most genres to compare, the line between those two is pretty blurred.
A Hack-and-Slash typically coincides with the subgenre "Dungeon Crawler" which is used to describe games that are similar to the Diablo series, such as Titan Quest and Torchlight. A Beat-em-up typically coincides with many games modeled in the fashion of Castle Crashers from a gameplay standpoint. You can move in all 8 directions and fight tons of enemies, but game progression typically always moves to the right. Beat-em-ups are designed to offer an arcadey and almost always rather linear experience. Dungeon Crawlers are more action oriented RPGs that focus on character building, looting, and combat typically from an isometric perspective. Clearing dungeons is a staple of this genre, hence the genre's name. Co-op is pretty standard for both Dungeon Crawlers and Beat-em-ups. For more specfic gameplay comparisons, compare and contrast Castle Crashers and something like Titan Quest or Diablo 3.
The problem with the differences between the standards of these genres is when there are other types of games that fall between these categories. Hack-and-slash has been used to describe some rather shallow action adventures that really only have repetitive combat going for it. Heavenly Sword comes to mind. These are still considered Action adventures but the hack-and-slash label does get applied sometimes which can make it a bit confusing. Also, Dungeon crawlers aren't always hack and slash. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is technically a Dungeon Crawler due to its gameplay but it isn't hack and slash and it isn't technically an RPG. It also has some co-op platforming to navigate complex terrain. Critics regard it as one of the freshest games in the genre in years, but it does show that the genre isn't as rigid in definition. Another problem arises when it's pointed out that Borderlands, a game that essentially plays like a shooter with RPG elements is also essentially a dungeon crawler with how the questing and world works. It doesn't have the typical control style or camera perspective of what has been known as a Dungeon Crawler for years, but it can be considered one. Similar discrepancies can happen within the beat-em-up genre such as The Watchmen: The End is Nigh. This is a third person action game that might seem like a typical action adventure at first, but it's really just about beating people up. Because of the way the game plays and scales it's more often labeled as a beat-em-up rather than an action adventure.
Holy shit I'm still typing I'll stop here as I think I've said enough on the issue.
EDIT: There were like 7 replies in the time I typed this.
Golden Axe was my favorite game on the Genesis. I had that 6Pack cart. and I played it all the time
Is God Hand a beat-em-up or do they have to be 2D?
Cause I'd totally say God Hand.
Also hack-n-slash is like God of War, jezz guys get your terms right.

God hand is one of those instances like The Watchmen like I mentioned above. Yes, it is a beat-em-up.
EDIT: I think, it's also reminiscent of Fighting games and Action Adventures. I could be off on that initial statement.
God of War is typically classified as an "Action Adventure" rather than straight "Hack-and-slash."

I always find it weird when people complain that they are too good at a game on the normal difficulty but then never turn the difficulty up. Most games can be harder if you want them to be!
You'll probably still be able to grapple-kill enemies but it won't be as much of a win button if you're taking way more damage from any hits you suffer.
Quote from: RibsClock;1871947Sobe: nice
I assume you mean lack of.
What do you mean as far as variety, as in fighting styles or abilities or what
Sorry that post was rushed, I was (and still am) at work.
The lack of unique characters problem is that, while there are many reskins with minor abilities, they're all either identical to each other (ie the knights) or incredibly bad (like the bomb guy). Final Fight may have only had 3 characters but they were all very unique. Grinding stats also made it a SERIOUS pain in the ass if I got tired of one character and wanted to try somebody else. It was also piss easy at all points in the game.
Its not the worst game ever (I played through the whole thing after all), but I don't think it's up to par with classics like Turtles in Time or Godhand.
Wait... if godhand counts wouldn't that mean Devil May Cry, Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden Sigma count as Beat Em Ups?

Making a game "harder" by just increasing the enemy health and damage and doing nothing else (ie what almost every games "hard mode" does) is bullshit and NOT what people enjoy in hard games. It's "artificial difficulty". Real difficulty is from good AI programming, brain twisting puzzles, and insidious map design, none of which can be controlled by a difficulty slide bar.

This is the problem with how vague the genre can be in cases like this. The Watchmen: The End is Nigh definitely counts so that sets a bit of a precedent. All I've ever seen of God Hand gameplay is just the main character fighting in an arena with whomever is the enemy at the time. I've never played the game so I'm going based off what little I've seen of it.
If there are levels to progress through like in Ninja Gaiden and others like that, and there is some noticeable level of character building, then it's an Action Adventure. If it really is just arena to arena like what I've seen in every video of the game that has ever been shown to me, it might fit in the beat-em-up category.
Well even on the hardest difficulty, it's just button mashing

I have to disagree there.
God of War controls are pretty damn good, much better than most of the games that have imitated it over the years. Ninja Gaiden requires more finesse and it seems bayonetta might be that way as well, but God of War has a lot more going for it than button mashing. Combos are generally not too hard but there really are a lot of moves you can pull off, particularly in GoW3. Also blocking and dodging are very responsive and generally good things to do.
You might be able to get by just pressing square for basic attack and circle for grapples, but anyone who just does that kind of sucks at the game.
Context: You could technically beat most enemies in a Ninja Gaiden game with just basic attack too, yet anyone who does that isn't playing very well.

I expected Punch Thor Clock to Death or one of its sequels to be on there.
Those are beat-em-ups right because you beat them up.
i think the best beat em up is masturbation
Quote from: Thor;1871984If character building, item collecting, and stats make a game not a beat em up then I guess Castle Crashers isn't a beat em up
Eugh, it's difficult to explain.
Castle Crashers does have those things, yes, but it still retains the classic Beat-Em-Up gameplay that is iconic of the genre.
In cases like Watchmen which i have to keep referencing but I don't want to, it is an 3d third person action game that doesn't have anything really going for it other than beating up dudes, so it's focus is entirelly on just beating up dudes. Hence the beat-em-up label gets used for games like that too.
It's very hard to put some games into specific genres, especially with how RPG elements like looting, character stat and skill building are making their way into every other genre. And as I said, I don't actually know much about God Hand.
The easiest way to classify a game is to take a look at what it's focus is. Skyrim is an action game, as you do fight a lot of things, it is an open world game, but its main focus is on being an RPG. RPG elements are things like what I mentioned above. This is also why things like Demon's Souls get put in the RPG category, because while Demon's Souls is heavy on the combat, the combat is a method to build your character. In a game like God of War, building your character is just to get better at the combat, because the combat is a heavy focus of the game. But it has more going for it than just combat, such as puzzles and platforming which are prevalent in it (though not so much as something like Zelda) so that is not a beat-em-up.
Castle Crashers does have RPG elements, but its focus is being a beat em up.
Games that have a lot of things going for it, such as Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (Platforming, Adventure, Combat, some light RPG elements with character building or in this case more city building, questing and side quests) these games are typically put under the broad category of "Action Adventure" Zelda also follows under this category, as it has platforming, puzzles, combat, adventure, etc. A common misconception from people that don't know what makes an RPG an RPG, is that Zelda is an RPG series. It is not. You may get new items, but whatever character building is in the game is not in an RPG style. Bayonetta which you have referenced in this thread is an Action Adventure.
An easy reference for the ambiguous term "RPG elements" is this: Character creation remeniscient of Dungeon's and Dragons. DnD invented the RPG, and as such things like Character leveling, character stat progression and skill progression, and usually an items system remeniscient of DnD in some way, are considered RPG elements.
EDIT: Throw "Questing" in there somewhere.
Done editing.

oh god yes
Quote from: RibsClock;1872004Increased health and damage are good in moderation, but only to the point where it makes it a little more intense to get through an area/puzzle/whatever. Ideally, a hard mode rewards the player by actually featuring more types of enemies and giving them more challenging content.
Diablo 2, for instance, added several incentives for beating harder levels and means of moving towards that, balancing skills, etc. and was thus a pretty good and rewarding game. And you're right, insane mode on Castle Crashers (so far) doesn't cut the mustard for me in that department.
And I hate to use the example, because it's a preposterously unoriginal game, but the Halo series had a good idea with its skulls. Yeah you have the tougher difficulty more damage thing, but you also get things like more abundant use of grenades, a higher likelihood of successfully dodging or using armor lock, suicide charging instead of fleeing, using better weapons, etc.
I agree some games have very well done difficulty settings, but it's pretty rare. Deus Ex: HR is another example of well done difficulty modes; it actually changed the GUI based on difficulty.

Speaking of bmups, Streets of Rage 2 is free on iPhone and iPod Touch for 24 hours. Just sayan.
Having Castle Crashers at #1 while having The Simpsons at #9 is bullshit. Fuck this list.
wait wait wait, are we talking about the arcade simpsons? where maggy gets stolen???
Dan Paladin was in the CC for a while right? It's pretty cool to see a former cc member being this successful.
Of course Tom Fulp was a cc member too
