Necrapolis / Big Bang Theory and souls
April 27, 2008, 08:28:01 PM
Consciousness is indeed the brain functioning to gather information from the world around us and reacting accordingly. This is generally referred to as instinctual behavior. I touch the frying pan when it is on the stove, my fingers get burned and so I pull away and look for something to cool them in. Basic consciousness.

Self awareness however, allows us to override our gut reactions (often what some call our better judgment) and perform actions considered irrational. I touch the frying pan when it is on the stove, my fingers get burned but I keep my hand there because I can. This is self awareness. The ability to assess situations and do as we please, even if it is against our 'better judgment'. This sets us apart from many animals and artificial intelligences, who can only respond within a fixed set of parameters according to behavior. I say most animals because giant squid have been known to commit suicide by beaching themselves and closing their gills and further examination has shown that they were depressed.

Back to the point though, this behavior, erroneous from instinct creates the conditions under which we can postulate the presence of a higher 'mind' or 'soul' than the brain.

Check your mouse and tablet settings. There might be a mouse override setting, probably in the tablet settings.

Necrapolis / The Call Wizards: Telemarketers
April 21, 2008, 03:51:24 AM
Unsolicited phone calls, a.k.a Telemarketers.

Who here often dreads answering the phone in case it's someone who has called you for the sole purpose of selling you something that you know damn well you don't want or need? Late last year the number of these calls that I had to answer and hang up on was PHENOMENAL. I was infuriated, so when the next telemarketer rang, I decided to lead them on a merry dance.

For 2 months I kept them on the end of a long line, explaining that either the post had lost my cheque or that I had to close that account because someone was stealing money from it. Eventually I claimed that I'd never been contacted by their ridiculous company once I got tired of it and felt that I'd sufficiently pissed them off. For several months, telemarketer silence. Bliss!

Now again, the hounds are at my door. My question to you is this...is it strictly speaking ethical to do what I did again, and was I even justified the first time? I feel vindicated in my actions, as no matter how many times I politely requested the various agencies to blacklist my number they kept calling. And should they really be able to do this in the first place? Perhaps a restraining order would be appropriate against any and all organizations who call with the intent to sell me another dildo.

As has been said earlier, if it's a case of uncertainty, a pad is probably the best solution to your problem. Seriously, it isn't worth getting into a flap about.

Necrapolis / Ugh, Lame "Racism"

Roman, what I'm saying is that because Racism begets so much friction between peoples, it can lead to war and the development of technology for detrimental purposes. As opposed to more beneficial uses that would be good for ALL of humanity, and indeed the rest of the planet that we're clinging to.

You make a very good point, Albino. Personally speaking, I can't take any religious text at face value, simply because I know what humans are like. They will chop and change according to what suits them at the time, and this is particularly bothersome when it comes to these kinds of texts.

Necrapolis / Ugh, Lame "Racism"

That's one of the few interesting things about the anonymity of the internet. You can't be immediately judged on the basis of your race if you never disclose it, rather you're judged on your bearing and manner. Though there's obviously a flipside to that; Normal Person + Anonymity + Audience = Total F***wad , to use the Internet F***wad Theory as an example. Some individuals are prone to abuse that. But that's offtopic.

The point I'm trying to make is that the internet can benefit relations between different cultures/peoples because there's no immediate judgment based on appearance, vocal qualities etc, rather everyone is an individual human being and they are seen by quality of character, as opposed to anything visible.

Eh. I don't give a flying cat's ass about racism. It's a pointless waste of energy to discriminate rather than co-operate or at least tolerate. I mean, if we were more tolerant, I'm quite confident that technology would be advancing faster and in far more beneficial directions and we'd be a lot more mentally stable as a race.

I like those Belgian seashells. Though, I can't eat too many or I feel VERY ill. Like too much 70% Dark chocolate ill. Plus I'm a diabetic, so I guess I really should be eating them :/

Gaming & Technology / Toon Link Discussion
April 15, 2008, 08:16:45 AM
I shall explain the split timeline theory.

As we all know, in OOT Link travels through time in order to defeat Ganondorf (who later becomes Ganon) thus earning the title 'Hero of Time'. After doing so, Zelda sends Link back to his original time in order to have the life that was denied him. This time around, wise to the problems that occurred as a result of him opening the Sacred Realm, Link instead waits for Ganondorf to expose his treachery and he is captured and sort of brought to justice (sealed in the Twilight Realm). This goes on to the events of Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess.

Back in the timeline that Link left, Ganon is now sealed in the Sacred Realm, which has been twisted into the Dark World. From there, he eventually escapes and assaults Hyrule. As the Hero of Time's bloodline no longer exists in that timeline, the people of Hyrule are waiting for a man who no longer exists and thus are forced to put their fate in the hands of the powers that be, who decide to lock Hyrule away beneath the ocean. The Link of Windwaker is an inheritor of the garb of the Hero and the Triforce of Courage only. He has no relation to the ancient hero, which is why he does not understand Ancient Hylian. He is a reincarnation of sorts.

However, another thing to note about the MM TP continuity is that the title Hero of Time never existed, which is why in TP, the green clothing Link receives after freeing Ordonna (the first light spirit) is referred to as the 'garb of a hero chosen by the Gods'. It does not specify a title for the previous hero; indeed no mention is made of such a legend. Though it is probable that the Link who returned to the past made a name for himself in his own right as a warrior; he seemed to retain the knowledge of his future.

It could be the fact that it's in either a frame or table and is trying to load the hyperlinks within that frame or table cell. That would explain why it's not working inside that context. Try changing it so that it defaults to opening it in a new window or tab, or at least shifts the focus to the main part of the browser window.
