If they get at least 1 vote, it's essentially the same thing anyway. If people could choose to be directly on the main election ballot, then I can see an issue, but that isn't the case, regardless of who exactly nominates the person, they go through this preliminary vote, which is the buffer itself to decide who gets on the ballot.
Plus it makes it more likely to get a lot of candidates which increases the choice voters have and the chance they'll see a combination of candidates they're truly happy with, and it's more fun that way.
