IRC, mIRC and you or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Chat

Now, I've heard through the grapevine that the staff may or may not be working on some new chat to implement directly into the site which may or may not also be integrated into the forthcoming arcade.  I don't give a shit about all that because it's time to talk about some motherfucking goddamn Clock Crew IRC bitch!!!!!!!!!

Really, though, more or less through all the various iterations of the website, we've always had an IRC chatroom to go along with it.  I fondly remember the days of yore back in 2003 when _altr_ and versusraven were the glue that held the Clock Crew together spammed swastikas all over chatroom.

For those not versed in how IRC works, look at the Wikipedia article or something.  To access the chat, you'll need an IRC client.  There are several to choose from, but most of us use mIRC (http://www.mirc.com) so any instructional screenshots from here on out will walk you through the process in that client.  I use an ooooold version, v6.16, so if it looks dated it's because it is.

Note: With mIRC, it says there's just a 30 day trial period then you have to pay to register, but it's actually freeware and the "trial" period never really runs out.

Open that bitch up and find yourself the main options window.  The icon should be the second one from the left or whichever one looks like a little hammer on top of a folder or something.  You'll want to hit the first tab as shown below.



For full name and email address, it doesn't matter what you put in.  You don't get any confirmation messages or anything so it really only affects your hostmask on whois commands.  Nickname and alt nickname are important since that's how your name will appear to everyone in the chat, so make sure you get those right or no one will know who the hell you are.



Next, navigate to the above tab to configure your server information.  Hit "add" then type in all the proper info.  It should appear as follows:

After that, make sure the server is selected from the dropdown box and hit connect (should be the first icon on the left or the one that's like little lightning bolts or something I don't know ok)!  Once you've connected to the server just type /join #clockcrew and you'll be in!  If you need to change your nickname while already connected, the command is /nick (without the brackets).

There are some who have already voiced their concerns about coming into a chat where Clammo, Roelie and I are OPs and to those people I... well, it's kind of absurd to worry about any of us going crazy or anything.  We're OPs because almost all of us are in the channel all the time and sometimes we have to kick and ban bots that come in en masse.  It's not really in any of our interests to antagonize anyone (especially now) and we've always welcomed and encouraged people to join the chat.  Roel spent a lot of time finding us a good server a while back and IRC is pretty fun!  Way better than using some dumb AIM blast.  Ninty and Marlin spend a lot of time with us, if that tells you anything, so I'd rather this thread not get clogged up with people worrying about how the OPs are going to drown themselves in IRC power and ban everyone for wanting to chat.  It's ridiculous and we just want people to utilize the chat since it's bar none the best way to communicate.

One more thing: if you come into the chat and no one says anything for a couple minutes, it's not because it's not active, it's because sometimes people are doing other things and we're not all keeping our eyes trained on IRC every minute of the day.  Don't just join and leave after a minute because no one responds to you!

Thanks for doing this Biggs! I just got the "theclockcrew.com" domain transferred over to the same host as my IRC, so soon it will also redirect to it. Unless of course everyone wants primebutt in which case I'll use clock crew.com for something else.
