External hard drive keeps ticking

and won't start up for me. I have to switch the drive on and off to make it work, but I'm worried that it'll be completely inactive soon

What kinda external drive? Does it have its own power cord or get it from USB? Also, have you tried switching it to another USB port?

has it always done this or has it just started? if its new return it and ask if its kinda old and the sound is new stop useing it and buy a new one.
