Toshiba Laptop Blackscreen after boot.

ok my brother's laptop boots up fine, albeit slowly. after login his screen goes black, the laptop is still on though as the backlights are still shining and the power lights etc. are still on. after he opened a SOF2 name creator.

i did a few quick google searches and tried a fix, didn't seem to work, i'll try and get my hands on a windows disc and do a fresh install hopefully that helps.

any of you have any ideas?

I assume you've tried safe mode
Can the laptop hook up to an external display?
If you must save critical data, get an external enclosure and move the files to a different computer.  Then it's safe to do all kinds of messing around.
