It's a legitimate reason. They're just measuring the dirt and vapor from the explosion to see if has enough water to sustain humanity. I wonder if we can see the explosion from earth.

I think in that video they say a regular telescope will be able to see it, but I'll be damned if I'm going to watch it again to be sure.
