Flash animation on the site should be our next priority

We've all noticed our numbers are slowly going down. I dread to think the amount of people that come here thinking we're a flash community, notice we have nothing to show for ourselves besides a bbs, and then quietly hit the back button.

We have some really good animators here, and have had many in the past, but we seem to be hiding all the talent. All of the thousands of brilliant flashes we've collectively made over the last 9 years are buried on a site that isn't even owned by us (we do run it, though)

We already have an upload system for comics which is about to be destroyed, can't we use that for flash? or something similar? Just a link to "animations" with something like this would be better than nothing. It would be ideal if there was a "top rated" section, either moved there manually by a selected team, or voted on by ourselves (there is already a voting system for the comics and library).

Even clocktopia.org has a scrolling banner at the top of the page that links to the latest flash with icons next to them.

I understand this might take some work but I just really, really think this is the next most important thing we need to do...

Sorry if I've missed some thread where this is already happening/been in production for ages.

I had this idea a little while back, I don't think it's original I think a few clocks have had at it themselves but none followed through so I gave it a go. Basically I was working on a database type thing which would collect all flash by all clocks that are on newgrounds. Not the actual swfs mind you, just pulls some info from newgrounds and provides a link to the newgrounds page.

Basically I got as far as a mySQL database to store title, flash id, author, score, review score and date submitted and I created a php file which would take in a newgrounds username and also allow you to associate it with a clockname (for those clocks who do not have their clockname as their newgrounds username) and then the php file would pull all flashes by that clock and add it to the database. Then I started work on another php that would scan through the newest flash in the portal and check if it was made by a clock and if it was add it to the database.

That was as far as I got but I had big plans, the idea was generally to get all clocks newgrounds accounts added and hence all their flash. Then there would be a page not unlike the newgrounds portal page with latest submissions down the left, highest ranked down the right and then in the middle I was thinking we could display the flash of the month which would now have a more automated method in that flashes submitted that month wouldn't need to added to a thread anywhere it would just automatically pull them and then users could vote then they'd be displayed in the center column. Also another idea was to have flashes that were most likely to win turd of the week review crew pick and the likes also listed to encourage people to go and vote on those and get some clocks some awards.

Oh yeah basically I was gonna say, if anyone really thought that idea would work/wanted to help me out on it I might get back to trying it. It was quite recently I abandoned it and only because I am hella busy.

But I think if anyone good at coding got in there to help they'd find themselves having to redo the whole thing because my methods are usually pretty rough cut.

EnglishClock

Cool, that sounds just like this thing called clockspace we used to have a while ago

I'd love to help but I don't know the first thing about coding, maybe you should team up with clam or piney or someone

From this thread I take it you don't have grid access anymore, English?

BootClock

I think I caught the tail end of clockspace, how did that work again?

Also I am reminded of another reason why I put the idea on the back burners, I believe piney and leek were working on something called the atrium and I think my idea kinda trod on it's toes. I don't know if that project is still going on or not and I think it would be wrong to push ahead with my concept if theirs is a bigger better all encompassing version of my idea.

I do. can you point me in the direction of something i might have blindly missed? (this thread can still be used to get public opinion and ideas)

Clam has brought this up about five million times.

EnglishClock

well ok then just delete this thread if it's redundant...

I think this is a great idea and I'm more than willing to help out if at all possible.

Of course we do, we have like 40 admins.
