As some of you may know, I came into the possession of a Sega Saturn a few months ago. Since then I've been trying to build a decent library for the system ranging from the classics such as Nights and Panzer Dragoon, too the more obscure such as Albert Odyssey, Clockwork Knight, and Galactic Attack. (AKA Rayforce)

During this time I've gained quite a bit of respect for the system. What I once considered gaming fodder, I now view as gaming gold. The Saturn is severely underrated and while it is a bit expensive to collect for, I'm having a blast playing some of these older games on the system.

TLDR: If you dont own a Saturn you probably should. Just be prepared to shell out some cash.

NOW moving on to what I originally created this thread for... One of the main reasons I bought a Saturn to begin with was its extensive SHMUP (Shoot'em up) and Fighting library. While I've already acquired a few SHMUPS I had a hell of a time finding a decent fighter that I knew I just had to have. After some recommendations from friends and some research I decided to grab a copy of Street Fighter Collection.

Some of you may own this for the PS1. What you may not know is that the Saturn version is indeed the superior of the two. The collection is compromised of 2 discs containing arcade perfect ports of Super Street Fighter II, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, and the US debut of Super Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold (Cammy makes her debut in the alpha series in this version of the game).

I already own Super Street Fighter II Turbo for the SNES but it is not an arcade perfect port. The Saturn version plays and sounds noticeably better and as i've always preferred the arcade version over the home console versions, I simply had to have this collection. Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold is also probably one of my favorite street fighter games hands down.

Another bonus is that the Saturn has one of the best controllers for fighting games.

And if nothing else, the cover art is extremely sexy.

Here's a quick vid showing all 3 games running on the Saturn.

If anyone has any recommendations for another good fighting game for the Saturn please feel free to let me know. I hear SNK has some pretty decent fighters for the system. I'm also curious as to whether anyone has played or heard of Waku Waku 7. I'd really like to get my hands on X-men Vs. Street Fighter but I have to find a copy of it and then I have to worry about how i'm going to play it.. The game requires a Ram Cart that I cant use on a regular North American Saturn..

X-men Vs. Street Fighter is my favorite fighting game on the Saturn. I use an action replay for imports. It works as a ram cart and gets around the region protection. Radiant Silvergun is also fantastic, but you'll have a hard time finding it at a decent price.

Well its the difference between "derp we should ban fatty foods" and "I am going to literally rape every american child after you vote me in"

I thought that you had to have the exclusive RAM cart inserted to play X-men vs street fighter? If it doesnt then I can totally get this as I have a useable gameshark for imports.

And yeah radiant silvergun is incredibly pricey... I spent 60 for SF collection and I thought I was overspending a bit but yeah. From what I'm hearing I got a pretty good deal considering its a complete copy.

The action replay I linked is a cheat device and a ram cart, so I don't think a gameshark works. Ram carts (in most cases) only add memory, like the Nintendo 64's expansion pak. Games require either a 1MB or a 4MB cartridge. However, newer third party cartridges will work with both types of games. The only games that require an exclusive cart are King of Fighters '95 and Ultraman; those games have data on the cartridges.

Also, look into the Darkstalkers series and Street Fighter Zero 3. I haven't played the Saturn versions personally (I have the cheap PS2 anthologies :wiebel:), but Street Fighter is supposed to run even better than the Dreamcast version of Alpha 3.

I wonder if it'll work on my gameshark then. Its pretty similiar to an action replay. Plays imports, cheat device, saves games, etc. Really, I'd like to get a action replay 4in1 but if my gameshark will work i'd rather just use it.

Street Fighter Zero 3 is essentially Alpha 3 isnt it? Is there an Alpha 3 or do I need to import it? Is it really that much better then alpha 2 gold?

And i'm not surprised the Saturn version runs better. As I stated before, it probably has one of the best 2D processors of any home system out there.

GameSlave

Yeah, Zero 3 and Alpha 3 are the same game. It was only released for the Saturn in Japan, though. Alpha 3 is fantastic. It has lots of characters, great music, and three different fighting styles (like Marvel Vs. Capcom 2).

You can get Alpha 1 & 2 by them selves extremely cheap for the Saturn. Like under 10 dollars cheap. For about $40 you can buy a Saturn and Alpha 2 on Ebay.

Pretty sweet deal I think.

Also i'm gonna have to buy an action replay. The gameshark has no RAM on it. :/

Another great series on the Saturn is Parodius. It's like Gradius except awesome. I've also heard that DoDonPachi is excellent. I'm looking to buy that next.

Fuck yeah, I love vertical shooters like that. All the power you get but watching out for the smallest damn bullet and you lose everything. I play lots of Star Prince when I play Retro Game Challenge; and I was addicted to the Raiden tribute that is on Newgrounds.

EDIT: Damn, with the graphics card and processor I got now, Flash is so fast that the game is much harder to control and grasp now.

This is why I made my sig. Also it's not a fighting game but you should totally get your hands on Castlevania: Symphony of the night. Aside the shit load times it the better version of the the two between it and the PS1 version.
If you haven't already done so, you have GOT to get your hands on Virtua fighter. I don't know if you will have the same experience but that thing just opens up a world of nostalgia for me.
