You know I am getting one anyway, y'alls.

Ruby/Sapphire was the last time I liked all three starters, crappy internet memes be damned. These guys though? I'm skeptical.

I was thinking of the badass Torterra, one of the best starter designs yet IMO.

You're right, I mixed them up. In my opinion, Diamond/Pearl has the best starters of the entire series. I liked them even better than gen 1. They all had brilliant concepts and a solid design. Black/white starts are way overdesigned and the R/S final forms look kind of I'm a edgy teen apart from Blaziken.

I'm hopeful for these new starters though. They look pretty legit. I'll probably go with the frog in the hopes that he grows an epic beard thing

Quote from: FamineClock;1936418Why don't they die when they get hit by all those things?

I think Pokémon togheter with most of what Nintendo has made is quite overrated.
Mind you I dislike all rehashing of the old in the wake of neglecting innovation. I do enjoy when say they make Super Mario Galaxy as it has new features but I still don't get why the fuck you have to slap on "Mario" or "Pokémon" as if that made it somehow better. It's just an excuse to rehash an old concept and formula where the fans adore it instead of whine that it's a copy of "Game X".

EDIT: Not saying the first ones were not great games, I don't doubt that, I'm just doubting they are worth the zealous praise they get. Any game which does not hold a sway over our childhood memories does not get the same leniency when they do not deliver innovation to the same degree-

but pokemon isn't made by nintendo. It's made by Game Freak, a private company.

To be fair, you don't have anything. Clocks are just machines that tick.

Ack, well my mistake then.

Still the thesis remains. I always dislike when repetition goes in the way of innovation for the sake of pure milking of a concept/franchais. I hold the same standard to the CoD/BF/Moba/Etc. series and/or games.

But this is derailing so sorry for that :D

Pokemon is a very repetitive series indeed, especially with their habit of releasing games in 3 versions (two at first, then one improved later), which is obviously a scam. However, over the course of the series they have improved a bit and changed up the gameplay. Each generation added new things upon the next, like breeding in gen 2, double battles in gen 3, battle frontier in gen 4, etc. Actually, this latest update seems to be one of the biggest changes to date, with the conversion from 2D to full 3D graphics.

The thing is, with some games they just found a system that works perfectly so if they changed it too much it would be ruined. You can still have legitimately great games even if you don't do anything too crazy with it. This is a special style that the Pokemon, the Dragon Quest, Disgaea, and a few others have perfected. They keep the core gameplay that everybody loves and wants more of, and just spice it up with new locations, new content, bigger maps, and more to do.

It's not the same as Call of Duty, or the "new" Mario games that nintendo is shitting out these days. Those games never change anything or add to the amount of content in the game. It's just the exact same thing, but often WORSE than the original. And actually, if you play some of the new mario games to have added a lot of new features
