Civilization V

Yes, it's been years since Civ IV was released. Since then we've seen several Civ IV expansions and Civilization's first console title, Civilization Revolution. But now we're finally getting a proper Sequel (PC exclusive, sorry console fans) and so far I like what I'm hearing about it.

If you don't already know what Civilization is, allow me to explain. The civilization series is a turn-based strategy series based around the idea of controlling a civilization  all the way from the stone ages to the modern day. You compete with other civilizations to win, and there are several ways to win. Using Civilization IV as a reference, you can either:
Have the most points at the end of the game
Destroy all other civilizations
Complete a space ship that can reach another star before anyone else does
Control most of the world's population and land mass
And there are a few other ways too. You control your civilization's advancement through technology, expand and create new cities, manage an economy, and create and do battle with armies. There's also diplomacy and trade. The thing that sets Civilization apart from the other strategy franchises out there is that it has the perfect level of depth.(Civilization Revolution being unfortunately shallower than Civilization IV) It is such a well done and loved franchise that many strategy game fans regard it as the absolute king of strategy games.

Now, on to Civ V.
First and foremost what has changed about the series is the grid. No longer is the game running on square based grid, but now a hexagonal grid. (Picture linked below)

I personally think this will be a much better system.
Another big change is that the game will be using steamworks, which is a welcome addition to any game in my book.
There is also a tool in the game that allows you to port over and convert maps from Civ IV. It does all the work for you! This is great because there are a lot of great Civ IV maps that I would still like to play.
Also, the mechanics that drive the combat are said to be better than ever this time around, details on this and many other aspects of changes remain under wraps.

I will be updating this thread as we find out more. The game is set to be released this September for $50.

It's well worth it. Civilization IV with Warlords and Beyond the Sword is still to this day my favorite strategy game ever.

I used to play Civ all the time pre-Civ-V. I'm pretty sure it's my most played PC series alongside Starcraft just in terms of lifetime hours.

That being said, I burned out really fast on both release-Civ V as well as G&K. I probably just played so much Civ when I was younger that I can't really get into it any more.

It's a shame because I was hyped for Civ V too. I was hoping it would reinvigorate my enthusiasm for the series. I still appreciate how good it is, but it doesn't hold my attention any more.

i guess the modding in a deep way is more difficult with 5 than 4?
