Quote from: Losperman;1970243But, as she pointed out, it was a Japanese creative team behind the video. So I think it was more like she showed up and her Japanese label had organized a video shoot that they thought would make her Japanese fans happy, and she went along with it. She has never seemed the type to be sensitive about doing whatever her labels want, even if she acts rebellious.

It's my mistake for not realizing there were more Japanese involved, though I award her no credit for the "specifically for my Japanese fans" excuse. I can't really fault Lavigne or Sony USA for the video if the choreography was someone else's (still bad, even if they're Japanese) decision. (Still terrible lyrics, though, not that Japan would care.) I'm just sort of incredulous that nobody stopped it.

At the same time, I think it's totally possible to shoot a video for a Western performer, in Japan, today, without triggering my gag reflex. Basically, I've been trained to look for people romanticizing/fetishizing/trainwrecking Japan, and this is it -- but the thing is that Japan totally romanticizes/fetishizes itself for international audiences sometimes, too. That doesn't make it less embarrassing or unrealistic when it's this bad. It's going to look "racist" if it's a white person taking top billing for it. So far, I haven't seen any other people's names come up, but "racist" or not, it's still either an Orientalist or reverse-Orientalist fuckwreck.

it is at times like this that i wish i had studied something other than "how to sound like tumblr any time someone mentions japan"

I don't even need to be spouting this shit I should have just left it at "this video blows for several reasons including brostep and an aging avril lavigne being dp'd by ke$ha and kyary pamyu pamyu"

Yeah, I'm not defending much other than it not being as racist as people are making it out to be. You're the first person I've heard actually make a decent argument for it. Most articles/posts I've read have been like "it's racist... like Gwen Stefani's stuff..." And that's something totally different.

Either way, the video itself is fucking terrible. At least we can all agree on that, it seems.

in all honesty, despite my true hate/dislike of avril lavigne, i cant find anything racist in her music video.

except maybe that its a horrible video, and that the song itself sucks donkey balls.

but! maybe people should stop overracting over an avril lavigne video with awful music.
they should just protest because she made a new song.

i know rite?

however, to be fair, she is very pretty, so if you ignore her awful music and personality, she's cute.
