Would anybody know about where to start programming file converters?

Well I've been noticing that so many file converters are freeware with trials and limits and stuff and I'm getting annoyed. So that is why I want to create a free file converter and stuff for all video files, music, etc. Would anybody know how to start going about doing this? I know it's a handful to start all this from nothing, but might as well try.
