Quote from: FlossClock;1725795Dude, fuck "Up". It was good, but it can suck a fat dick compared to "Coraline" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox". I'm still pissed about shit balls "Ratatouille" beating out "Persepolis" a couple years back.

Pixar is great and has yet to release a truly bad film, but they don't deserve half of the shit they get.

you forget that Oscar voters are spineless idiots and it's only thanks to Pixar's excellent reputation that they've been able to man up and admit they liked an animated film. Just be happy animation is starting to rise above its kiddy reputation.

but yeah Persepolis should have beaten Ratatouille.

Quote from: PatriotClock;1724920The Phantom Menace wasn't a good movie. Avatar however was a great movie. Just because it didn't reinvent the wheel with its script doesn't mean it isn't deserving of a nomination. The movie was groundbreaking and will influence movies for years to come.

The movie is an overrated shiny turd.

Get ready to explode because Up is better and will win.

Persepolis was a fantastic movie, and it's deffintly better than Ratatouille, but you liked Coraline better than Up? Shit man, I think they just deserve it this year.

1. Up receiving nominations in best film and script. I'm not going to claim it should win but it's a great step forward for animated films being as accepted as live action.
More like we're just gaining back old ground after animations got cornered into the "Best Animated Feature" category. Remember, in 1991, Beauty and the Beast might have won if not for Silence of the Lambs.

Am I just the only person with grandparents close to death? I thought the whole idea of this trip letting him get over the passing of his wife to be really touching. He had so many regrets for what he never did he forgot about what he already had done, and that's what he needed to realize.

It's hardly old ground, it's not like animation in the oscars used to be a regular occurrence. Beauty and the Beast was a fluke and mostly got in because the voters were so wowed by that ugly CGI ballroom. Animation has never been as respected in America as it is now.

I would say between Snow White and Bambi was the peak, or around that time. Not only because it was nominated for an Oscar but because it really is one of the nicest looking Disney films, and Disney was releasing some great shorts at the time too. I would agree that animation is becoming a more respected art form now; that's mostly because it's getting easier and easier to make animated films and more and more talented writers are getting the chance.

EDIT Snow White wasn't even nominated? I thoguht it won best picture :/ What Disney film am I thinking of?

EDIT EDIT Has Disney seriously never gotten best picture and how didn't I know this asjn[fo

Hmmm never watched Persepolis.
Nah Coraline wasn't that amazing, it was abit to much tried and true although "not even that... anymore" is one of the best things to ever have been.
Though I forgot it came out the same year as Up. I find myself ambivalent at this moment.
Quote from: PEYOTE;1725071and it was a great film in every aspect of the word, you're an anti-semite and a nazi fetishist so of course you don't like it.
Also I'm a shitty poster

Quote from: Clay Puffington;1725257Propoganda you missed the point of the movie absolutely entirely jesus christ. The Nazi's are WAY more empathetic and even likable characters than the basterds - if Tarintino WANTED you to like them he wouldn't have called it "inglorious basterds" - he's not naming the film after a Nzai sentiment, but the truth about the "heroes". They're savages without honour or even a real understanding of morality.

As said before, I still think it is an entertaining movie.
However those who share your opinion seem to analyze it in the movies favour, seeing depth in how the germans were portraid as other than monsters. That is acceptable and a good viewpoint, however when reading/listening to reviews who reference it to other "Jew fight back/get revenge movies" it feels hollow. Yes, I repeat your mistake and analyze it in negative favour but; We all know most people who go see it go "Fuck yeah! Nazi's are getting what they deserve!" which is why I don't feel like it is a good movie or deserves movie of the year.
It does nothing to the average person to create a new opinion but instead builds on old ideas.

The Pianist was great because for once
A: You had no proud americans
B: It portraid the disgust of the getto standards in a humane and realistic way. It wasn't a huge deal when people were rottening in the streets and the main character didn't cry every half hour about how horrible something was; It was war and he did what he could to survive.

I find Inglorious basterds lacking this. Now mind you I don't sit and think this far when watching the movie but this is what I find myself thinking when it is nominated to the most prestigious award there is.
The least I can demand from it is that it brings something new to the table, asshole arsonists has already been done by the Dirty Dussin and portraying germans as anything but monsters aswell. It was abit tasteless with gore and used it not with finesse as in District 9 (yes, shitloads but with realistic background) but in shallow shock purpose.

Nah, the closest it got was the Beauty and the Beast nomination. Disney was definitely at its peak back in the 40s-60s kind of era but I think animation as a whole is doing pretty well these days.

Can someone explain to me how Avatar was groundbreaking? People seem to throw that around a lot without knowing what the groundbreaking part is, besides making a lot of money.

I don't think any part of the entire movie was original.
Anyone who would say such a thing needs a huge beating.

Poltergeist

I dunno Props, I think most people were pretty shocked when Wilheim got shot.

It wasn't groundbreaking, however it had an undeniably large scale. Sadly because of this most cinema-goers would say that Avatar was far more "groundbreaking" than say, Citizen Kane.

Thing is, despite going to other planets and having giant robot/catpeople on dragon fights, I still think Lawrence of Arabia has a far larger scale and epic feel than Avatar. I don't think it'll be dethroned anytime soon in that regard, either

The only thing I thought was pretty new about Avatar was the way it was filmed, where they were able to see what it would basically look like when the movie was finished. Like while filming they were able to see what was up in Pandora etc. But I doubt many of the movie goers know about that.
