this is a quote from The Elements of Style by Strunk and White. I've replaced all the "writing"s with "drawing"s.

Quote"Draw in a way that draws the viewer's attention to the sense and substance of the drawing, rather than to the mood and temper of the artist.  If the drawing is solid and good, the mood and temper of the artist will eventually be revealed and not at the expense of the work.  Therefore, the first piece of advice is this: to achieve style, begin by affecting none--that is, place yourself in the background.  A careful and honest artist does not need to worry about style.  As you become proficient in the use of your medium, your style will emerge, because you yourself will emerge, and when this happens you will find it increasingly easy to break through the barriers that separate you from other minds, other hearts--which is, of course, the purpose of drawing, as well as its principal reward."

I don't know if any of that rings with you but I always think of it whenever the idea of acquiring style comes up :)

Quote from: Golden Clock;1747039The very fact you're deliberately trying to get a personal style might keep you from getting a good one. A personal style develops out of having drawn so much that you develop it naturally, as your preferred way of drawing. What you've shown here isn't stylish, it's all just ugly imo. Just keep drawing and practicing, and your style will emerge one day. It might not be for another 10 years for all anyone knows.
i realized this when zombie lincoln posted the same thing, but thank you for reiterating!!

first post wasn't great example, but I'm now not focused on making my stuff look like "so-and-so" and simply what I want it to look like

maybe I should rename the thread my art thread
