alright so I bought minecraft sunday. its awesome

I can open minecraft.jar and I tried to put in a mod but when I did it my screen turned black and  couldnt play minecraft anymore. I redownloaded it and kept my save so its all fine but how do I get those mods to work. anybody that has minecraft here knows?
