Could tablets replace laptops as portable gaming solutions?

The reason why I ask this is because with the Tegra APU looking pretty badass in terms of graphics, and with Windows 8 supporting ARM processors, I'm unsure if we'll start seeing people playing Skyrim on tablets with USB keyboards and mice.

Tablets are a bad choice for gaming because the only input they have is a touch screen. There's a reason every purpose built game controller has buttons and sticks to protrude from the surface. A laptop keyboard is vastly superior as a control mechanism than a touch screen for most game types. If you stick a usb keyboard on a tablet you end up with an abomination that is just worse than a laptop with no advantages.

You also seem to be forgetting that neither tablets NOR laptops are the kings of portable gaming. That distinction goes to portable consoles like the 3DS and the PSP Vita. They are both so vastly superior to tablets and, to a lesser extent, laptops, that I doubt they'll be overtaken any time soon. Not only do they have superior controls when it comes to gaming and hardware better optimized for video games, but they also have much more support from game software developers, both first and third party.

To be fair, you don't have anything. Clocks are just machines that tick.

One of the big parts of tablets (in my mind at least) is their low cost, which is partially enabled by their low specs. I doubt that tablets will become the big thing for portable pc gaming, though I wouldn't be surprised if they continue to become more popular with gamers in the near future.

I can see some tablets being made that have a keyboard that you could slide out. (like with slidephones)
I can see them replacing laptops at some point. I dont know how soon that would be though. it will still be alot of years before we refine tablets.

I've tried a few tablets now but the only one worth buying is still the ipad imo and that one is still more expensive then your psvita and 3ds combined.
Its having a pretty good game library at the moment, but probably not enough to please hardcore gamers.
Again the only gimmick is its touch screen which lends itself perfectly to casual play and JRPG's (I've heard the chrono trigger and Final Fantasy Tactics ports work well) but aside from that I don't know.

Media don't actually cease to be when new ones come to be, they more often than not mutually exist and overlap

I don't think they are the best choice for portable gaming and i am sorry if i talk as if they are.

I'm just asking if the idea for tablets designed with gaming specs will reach the same level of popularity as gaming notebooks.

Though personally, I can see that if given the proper specifications and if the problem of right-clicking can be resolved, tablets would be able to play strategy games, though other genres may have issues with a GUI relying solely on a touch screen.

I'm pretty sure the only things that tablets and smart phones aren't going to replace are big professional work computers and games consoles/gaming PCs.

Also cars and food and all that other stuff.

The only way a tablet could compete as a portable gaming platform with purpose built devices like the PSP and 3DS is if it had tactile controls, at which point it would no longer be a tablet PC.

EDIT: Unless you include portable consoles as "game consoles"

The ipad is already leading the way for PDA's, I mean they're supposed to do a huge amount of tasks for you. That's why they are PDA's, but hardcore gaming on one of those things, though likely inevitable, just doesn't seem fitting. It's more meant as a day-to-day assistant, be it in the professional work place or in the home. The fact that games are even featured on it right now is so that you can spend downtime in public areas without looking like a "kid". That's all just societal BS anyway.

Ultimately, if something like a gaming tablet were to exist it would, like stated before, be more of a refurbished model of a laptop and not even called a tablet at all. One technology improves the other, but they won't become the same thing.
