Quote from: SatelliteClock;1901372@Astronaut: This is definitely true. I'm thinking about making a small percentage of people dismiss you when you say hello, but I feel like if too many do that then the player will get discouraged. People not stopping is one of the absolute least fun parts of canvassing, so I hope the player will be fine with that stretch of reality.

how about some people dismiss you completely no matter what. but others dismiss you based on how high your ??? stat is. or they stop dismissing you after youve said hi to them 3 or so times. but yeah it might discourage people. maybe something for in later levels only? idk how you plan to do this though

Chalk Clock

im confused as to witch part of the bar im suposed to be going for and what it actully does when i hit it. there is only one that i can tell is larger than the others and hitting it seems almost imposible as the lights move so quickly. even when i did hit it i wasnt even sure if it was doing anything to effect the conversation. Maybe you should only have it there on the ends of convorsation chains?

Got it. There are actually four different levels of bar height but obviously I need to make that more pronounced. Also right now it adds a multiplier to how much you boost civ care and trust depending on which bar you hit. I just had a revelation though about how I'm going to make it much much more clear so hopefully it'll make more sense next build.

I don't like basing it on just a stat, it feels too arbitrary and I feel like the player would just get frustrated with the system. The 3 times thing doesn't really make sense and doesn't happen in real life. In later levels I'll prob have more dismissers. Would it bother you playing the game if not enough people were dismissing you?

not really I suppose. because when that happens in real life it sucks and you dont want to continue anymore after a while. I guess if that happens with your game you are a poor game designer lol

Mosrhun

It's pretty sweet man. Looking good.

Here is a new playable alpha! At the moment there are still no goals, this is very much a sandbox. So feel free to play around with the system and tell me what you think! I'm very interested to hear in what you think of the confidence meter, using topics, targeting, and whether you are having any semblance of fun! And let me know if you encounter any bugs or strange circumstances.

Protip: Care determines how much money a person is willing to give, and Trust determines how easy it is to get money from them.

Here's the alpha:

[flash=http://files.myfrogbag.com/csdp60/prealpha8-2.swf]width=640 height=400[/flash]

known bugs:
care and trust don't move or light up on 6th click, but do
spotlight doesn't always start on civilian and gets confused when civ.x is close to hero.x

AstronautClock

how to get money. everyone is a member of oonga and doesnt have money on them.

dang you're right, I was testing no money civs and forgot to reset that variable. I'll have a new version up soon.

edit: okay you should be able to make some dough now

AstronautClock

ahaha okay so I'm getting the hang of this.

the more trust the more likely they will give you money. and the care is how much they will give if you land the marker in the green zone. I see.
There are a couple of things though that bugged me still though.

so after a few customers I began to try and retalk to customers that just gave me money. to see if they would do it again.
their stats are randomised obviously so they acted as if I had never talked to them before. I could just talk to the same person forever and take money from them each time I'd talk to them.
it would help if you could make it so that the people would notice that you had already spoke to them or that they had already given you money or not.

also what do I do with all this money

and it would be neat if I could walk around too though thats not really necesary I suppose

Yes this definitely happens. You know how I'm going to make certain random civs not want to talk to you? When I make that script, I'm going to apply it to civs that you have already talked to also.
Quotealso what do I do with all this money
that's gonna be challenging for me. I'm thinking about letting the player buy new clothes and buy haircuts, and maybe harder difficulties... do you have any ideas?
Quoteand it would be neat if I could walk around too though thats not really necesary I suppose
I'm thinking about doing this by letting the player press a "move" button and then clicking on the map where they want to go.

AstronautClock

alright nice one

Quote from: SatelliteClock;1902213that's gonna be challenging for me. I'm thinking about letting the player buy new clothes and buy haircuts, and maybe harder difficulties... do you have any ideas?

hmm that aesthetics sound good. maybe you could buy some sort things so you are more eye catching too or something.
Also you arent allowed to question people anywhere probably. so maybe you could buy some permits for places where alot of people usually go?
So with the permits you could pretty much buy permits so you get access to new levels.
corrupt police officers to arrest the competition thats also trying to get people to give money to their cause.
maybe that oonga organisation could be your competition.
to be honest I was pretty annoyed that first time I played your game and everyone said. "I already gave money to oonga".
but it also motivated me to try and convince them otherwise for a while. so maybe that would give you some ideas but idk. that reminds me of the team rocket gag that pokemon has a little bit, some sort of pseudo competition that never actually stops you but always provides some sort of challenge throughout the game to keep it interesting.

Quote from: SatelliteClock;1902213I'm thinking about doing this by letting the player press a "move" button and then clicking on the map where they want to go.

oh I just think it would be funny to follow people around like a creepy stalker :gl:
also if I could walk around. and since talking is a big part of your game.
maybe you could talk to shady figures that you could give money to in exchange for rumours about the area. what people are concerned about the most, and things like that. basically to help you earn even more cash and help you get through the level.

AmberArachnidClock

Astronaut, that post is a goldmine of ideas, I seriously can't thank you enough for that. I especially like the shady figure idea.

AstronautClock

sweet cant wait to see an update.

AmberArachnidClock

messing with trust and care....

AstronautClock

lol her trust and care are pretty high yet she remains extremely skeptical. what a cunt

Hey, I just want to stop by and tell you to keep it up. You're doing great.

I wasn't sure where you were going with the game when you released that first alpha but things seem to have progressed incredibly well. I imagine this game will really take off after it's been released and word gets around. You could easily have a FarmVille/TinyTower on your hands here, what with seemingly-tedious-but-so-addictive-wth-is-happening-to-me gameplay.

Here's a new BG I've been working on

Thanks a bunch! It really means a lot to hear that.
