Unless someone upstanding is willing to take the reigns by then.

I know I said the same thing a few months ago, but nobody really stepped up with a definite yes.

You will be applying to be owner and operator. There are no perks (except that you could spy on people's uploads I guess). It will cost money to run, but very little.

RobClock

what's the cost on keeping it up?

I'd really hate to see it go down after all these years, and there's very few other hosting sites i can think of that are actually decent. but at the same time, I have a shit minimum wage job and my hours are going to be more than halved in 2 weeks when school starts. :wiebel:

It's with bluehost.com, so you can see their pricing.

It's from $4.95 to about $10.00 depending on how many months you pay for in advanced.

EvilBeanClock

thanks for hosting it as long as you did

d u m p y

fuck if i had a job i would ;_; i would however be willing to donate money or something if that helps

RobClock

Quote from: IronClock;1918607I would have to speak with the staff but if no one's willing to pay then i would like to use some of the funds to keep it online

I think that's a pretty good idea.

I'd be willing to pay for it, but with my financial situation, it'd only be part time. As of right now I'm waiting on my mastercard to arrive in the mail so I can't even make online transactions, or I'd jump at the opportunity to help.

Yea, it is an account that's grandfather'd in so that it is totally abusing their "unlimited" policy.

Also it has Cloudflare in front of it to keep the bandwidth manageable.

As a prominent and influential and handsome and modest member of staff I vote in favor of using donations to run it and have it become an official part of the Clock Crew Network

Is shared hosting really capable of handling the # of requests you get? I always thought you'd need some kind of VPS or something more.

e (2 posts above): oh, I see what's happening.

What kind of revenue are you currently generating with ads (if any)?

I hope my questions aren't too forward, but I assume it's important to get some numbers in so people can figure out how much of the cc funds they'll need to dig into per year.

I've offered to take up the project before, and I'm still up for it if anyone needs a hand with the code. I can help with PHP, Javascript (also Node and jQuery), HTML5, and CSS3. Myfrogbag is full of clock history and I'd hate to see it go.

i might be willing to chip in a little every once and a while to keep it alive.

It is shared hosting, but I am pretty certain that myfrogbag is eating the lion's share of the box it's on. It handles it easily because a) the program is rediculously simple, and b) Cloudflare is acting as a free CDN to the frequently accessed files, saving gigs of bandwidth a day.

It has earned a grand total of $71 in it's lifespan... It has had 800 unique users in the past month, but the click through rate is so tiny that you might as well not count it.

I didn't know Cloudflare worked so well.

hmm, is there any way we can increase revenue with this thing? Paid accounts for those who'd want them, ads at the bottom of direct-link pages (as illustrated here), some kind of chrome extension for easy uploads, a shorter URL that also acts as an advertising agent (eg: //frogb.ag (for $90/yr, yikes)), ????.

There are a lot of things that could be done (and if you like I'll list them), but I doubt it will ever be monetarily successful. The business model of image hosts is not an easy thing to make work.

And about Cloudflare... this is one of those perfect-use-cases for something like their proxy, since the vast majority (95%) of all traffic is from the most recent/popular SWF uploads... Single files that are easily offloaded to the cloudflare CDN.

a private torrent site i'm a member of has an img host site run by, i think, 2 members. no ads on the site. runs purely off donations, mainly because no one is going to click ads because the torrent site is the only site use can hotlink to.

so yeah, that would probably be the best way to go. not the hotlinking restriction, but the donation based one. with a meter and monthly goals.

clockradioclock

Yeah, I can't imagine running a file host is easy these days. I'm just looking for the means to keep the project self-sustaining, or, at the very least, semi-self-sustaining.

buttplug

Too be honest I use Imgur for everything now.

anyway i can chip in and we can also dip into the funds to help keep it afloat. also i vote to have crc maintain it along with me and clam and anyone else who can code a php or 2

I love imgur, and it's one of the goodies. I could recreate it in a week (no doubt better), but it's sort of unique and I'd hate to compete.

AnkhClock

Shit, I'd pay ten bucks to see Frogbag live another year.

I use Imgur quite a bit (it's the easiest imagehost to use at Something Awful) but I still use Frogbag to upload a lot of ClockCrew related things. Especially my sig.

I'd hate to see FrogBag go. It wouldn't be the end of the world but it's convenient.

This might be a good idea. I don't think hotlinking restriction actually helps at all. I know the most popular imagehost that was only available for Something Awful ended up shutting down due to shoddy management, yet at the same time I've seen people I don't think were Clocks using FrogBag at other sites (those sites were also Something Awful).
