Pennsylvania has some shitty alcohol laws, but it's really not as bad as everybody makes it out to be.  It sounds tedious, but when you live here it's actually easy to adjust to.  Yes, all wine and liquor is sold by the state at state stores called "Wine and Spirits."  State stores are generally open from 9am until 9pm, with more restricted hours on Sundays, usually noon-5.  Beer distributors, however, are privately owned and can operate on different schedules but with some limitations on the times.  Beer distributors sell cases of beer (there is no limit on how many you can buy lol), cases of wine coolers, kegs and stuff like that.  Six packs, twelve packs, 40's or anything like that can only be sold at bars and restaurants.  However, grocery stores and other places get around it by having a "restaurant section" and acquiring a liquor license.  Also, many grocery stores are located only a couple doors down from a state store, so it's not much of a hassle to do your grocery shopping and wine shopping at the same time.  There's a good number of grocery stores which actually have a wine and spirits shop inside them.

Also, there are plenty of bars in Pennsylvania, which operate virtually the same as bars in other states.  At least it isn't Utah where you're stuck drinking 3% pisswater all night.

I don't frequent the bar, and the beer is mostly common brand names like Budweiser and Miller.  Typically I prefer Lagers and IPAs from micro breweries, but if you're looking for a cheap night of drinking and some good company the bar is perfect.  There are always people there but it's never too crowded.

Yes. We have plenty of good beer. All that schwilly pisswater has lost a huge part of the market share in the past decade. Microbreweries are huge, and there are a number of somewhat larger high-quality beers. It's definitely true that some areas have more good beer than others.
