Never heard of TVPaint, wasn't even aware Amiga still did anything, but I've been tempted to try out Toonboom. It looks interesting, I just never got around to it over the years out of sheer laziness. What exactly makes Toonboom better than Flash anyways? I imagine it's less clunky than any of the adobe versions of flash at the very least.

I haven't actually used it much, but I know people who do. First big thing is that it's actually software designed for animators to make animations, rather than Flash, which was designed to make web advertising a much more unpleasant experience. Adobe has not designed and will never design flash for animation, it's designed for interactive media and that's really all they care about. You probably already know the millions of things that flash does wrong, glitchy vectors, bad line smoothing, shitty masking, terrible handing of raster images, with terrible nearest neighbour scaling which looks terrible, you can't fucking tween a png without it looking so fucking terrible.

It doesn't use actionscript, but rather an intuitive node-based system that most modern animation suites use, such as Maya, Nuke, Houdini, and all that, so you'd also be learning some fundamental ideas that will allow you to pick up other rendering, animation and compositing software.

It has the pencil tool with variable line width, that alone should tell you the difference. You can only make shitty flash drawings in Flash, like no matter how good something is, someone will always be able to tell you made it in Flash unless you spent hundreds of hours tweaking each vertice and creating a gb file that will crash Flash when you load it.

When I said you can't grow as an animator, what I meant was that Flash will teach you a lot of bad habits, it will get you used to Flash and it's terribleness and lock you in to it's badness. Learning with actual animation software will help you loads. Once you've gotten to grips with it, which probably will only take a week or two, you will save so much time and anger, and you'll be able to create new effects that you never thought were possible before, because in Flash, they weren't.

The way you describe that pencil tool has me intrigued. When I first started using flash I actually did zoom in and get obsessive over cleaning up vertices. And if it's actually designed for animation setting up the audio might not be a huge chore like in Flash. I'll definitely check out Toonboom, thanks Sinister!

blender is alright if for some reason you don't want to pirate maya. It can do a bunch of stuff but it does everything in weird non-industry-standard ways so you get locked in with the software. Just pirate maya, it'll do you better in the long and short run anyway.

Not heard of vectorian giotto, I've not really been into flash for ages. From the website it looks really shit, I'm not sure why you'd use it over Flash.

Not particularly, Flash will always be the best Flash out there.
