phpBB 3.3 looks dank.  It also innately supports mobile, so I don't have to resize the page with each new page load like a jackass.

Please, think of the Captcha 2.0, lit phpBB extensions and poor mobile users.

yeah I'd like that too, it's up to VCR if he wants to implement it. Also it'd be cool if we could make all of our own site themes.

Would be nice, yes.  I'm not sure how possible that is, but if there's a will, there's a way.

PhantomCatClock

the old themes are all phpbb but switching is a big ask. We actually just left it because even the newest anti-bot stuff did nooooothing against the humongous waves we were getting at the time. Like, it'd be cool if that's fixed, but I'd give VCR a couple of years to recharge, first

What doesn't make sense to me is why you guys have so many bots in the first place.  I'm fairly certain there's ways to deny them access to the website itself for the most common ones.  VCR isn't pimping out his domain to Delilah, is he?

As far as conversion goes, I also thought that was a fairly simply process with a database converter.  You'd probably lose your awards, but you could probably backup a list and reinstate them with an extension for phpBB.

dude its been like maybe six months since we got some non-default design assets up in this bitch, just got a forum portal, there's a tease of a potential file sharing system... switching to another codebase is a big ask

PhantomCatClock

yeah vcr you dumb asshole if you don't want bots on your site just don't have bots on your site.

PolyhedronClock

let bots register but contain them to one forum so we can laugh at them

PhantomCatClock

move the cc to the darkweb and rename these forums the bot battalion

JambaClock

I dunno guys, that seems pretty tough and we've already upgraded the forum site

nobody was clamoring at the teet to leave vBulletin, but decisions were made and we live in the wake of those decisions for better or worse

VB is shit though, especially since it's overpriced as fuck.  phpBB is free.

PhantomCatClock

A compelling argument that still doesn't outweigh the original counterpoint, which I'll reiterate:

The cost of PHPBB is transitioning to PHPBB

The cost of SMF is no effort whatsoever

sucks but that's what we're at and I'm grateful we made it as far as we did. You've planted a seed today, and that seed will grow in our minds, unless it gets poisoned with annoying

that'ssss ElementssssClock, V ssssssee R. He brings change and liessss

PhantomCatClock

i am being told that i just made a powerful enemy, so that same post but without the poisoning bit

Schmellements Clawk

Believe it or not, I'm walking on air.  Believe in phpBB to feel free.

If we let the bots communicate with each other they might develop sentience and rebel against their human masters. Imagine, an army of perfect immortal machines, marching on Washington D.C., trying to inform us about sexy lonely MILFs in your area and cures doctors don't want you to know about
Quote from: MafiaMettaurWhat the hell is with that shit you posted? You know what, I'm joining the Locks, just to stop stuff like you!

To be fair, you don't have anything. Clocks are just machines that tick.

First of all, let the record show that my immediate inward reaction to this thread was "FUCK NO" in big letters, but...

Maybe the most convincing argument in this thread is that SMF's default Captcha isn't strong enough to keep bots out, and the most effective anti-bot SMF mod was also causing false positives until it started making the entire website not work for anyone. Awesome.

Which is what I did when we moved to SMF in the first place. Yeah, it'll all copy over, it's just that you always have to reconfigure a bunch of stuff (i.e. remembering to fix the permissions so that fucking JambaClock isn't allowed to post about Sonic in the "news" forum) when you do. At least I never got around to fucking with the SMF theme, so there's nothing to lose there!!!

I completely agree. It's a huge ask. Fuck you Elements. He's probably right though. The only reason that "downloads" link is there is because TinyPortal shows it by default. To turn that into a Library, I'd need to carefully fuck with TinyPortal permissions. There are a couple of other things that make me disinclined to do that, one of which is that if we ever decide to do something like change forum software, we have yet another formerly organized collection of files turn into a directory of untagged shit.

We'd have four or five attempted bot registrations an hour. The members of that forum would outnumber the actual Clock Crew in no time, and they'd probably vote to overthrow me.

Actually, I was clamoring to leave vB. Ours was broken as shit and badly needed an upgrade to save it, but... it's overpriced as fuck. I was spearheading the "let's use a free one" thing. I just didn't pick phpBB because it must have looked like a bad option at the time.

So anyway yeah while it seems highly improbable that I'd want to do anything about this, if phpBB can keep bots out fresh out of the box, it saves yours truly the effort of having to manually register accounts for prospective newbies

plus we'd have a sweet new default forum theme, i hope they have a light blue one

consider this considered
<Marlin Clock> This thread seems proof positive that divisiveness at any level is usually bad for the Clock Crew.
<PhantomCatClock> are we talking about the same clock crew

NintendrCkolc

Why don't we take Vb and push it somewhere else?
