I really like the two friends I have left here in Rome, but something tells me it's going to be hard for us to keep ourselves company for three weeks minimum. I've already talked about beans and lentils more times in the last two weeks than I'd ever expected in my entire life.

AbsintheClock

I hope I'm wrong, but I got bets on Marlin. Nothing personal, just the location he's in.

NintendrCkolc

I'm in Central IL and I work at a local prison with close to 2000 inmates. I can't work from home so uh...

And it's now officially in my area.

it depends on your definition of "safe"

strictly speaking, as an individual, your odds of contracting it right now are still low. it's not a particularly hardy or infectious virus, and, depending where you live, the number of infected people is proportionally very small

the problem is:
1) it takes a long time to show symptoms- you could have it already and not know, so it has a large window of opportunity to spread
and
2) it's "novel" to humans, meaning it's never spread to people before, so no part of the global human population has existing antibodies to counteract it. nobody is immune

the reason everybody who knows what they're talking about recommends limiting your travel to necessities is that, even though the chances of any individual getting it are low, when you roll those dice for the entire population, it's pretty much guaranteed that somebody will get it. (it might be more practical to think of it not as "the odds that you're going to get the disease" and more "the odds that one of the people who gets the disease will happen to be you.") every time that happens, it increases the number of infected people, and worsens the odds for everybody else. this is what they call exponential growth. the faster this happens, the more our medical infrastructure is threatened- there simply aren't enough doctors, treatments, and hospital beds available to treat the portion of the population that, mathematically speaking, are going to be simultaneously in need of treatment... unless we can slow the spread
that's what social distancing is for. the fewer people are moving within a population, the fewer contacts there'll be between any two individuals, which means the rate of infection slows down, hopefully to manageable numbers
wapo made a visual sim to illustrate the effect:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/

but it's a bit like voting; the individual's ability to affect the result one way or the other is so small and so abstract, that many individuals make the decision to ignore it. so many individuals, in fact, that together they threaten to make the practice worthless

tl;dr:
if you go to 7-11, you probably will not contract covid-19
but if everybody just keeps going to 7-11 whenever the fuck they feel like, a lot of people are going to die unnecessarily

so it kinda depends on how you feel about other people dying who aren't you. is it worth missing a trip to 7-11? most people say "no". that's democracy

this happened to me when I had a "sit in a chair all day" job and thought I could just wear jeans

it might also help to adjust the height of your seat, I forget how that works

<PhantomCatClock> are we talking about the same clock crew

PhantomCatClock

I... have been wearing jeans for the last couple days and I haven't worn jeans in years. I think that was the tip I needed

why would wearing jeans make a difference?

I'm assuming you ask this question because you only wear jncos

in short, the jeans I was wearing (just, like, 501s ok) didn't have a lot of room in the crotch, so when sitting down, the fabric in the gooch area would be completely taut and putting pressure on the 'nads, affecting, uh, circulation I assume

issue resolved by wearing looser or lower waisted jeans, or slacks that were more flexible or generously cut

and raising my seat height, 'cause if it's too low and your knees are higher than your pelvis, all that pressure is on the bottom of your pelvis
