I have been thinking of this the past month, i think its absurd to take a life in exchange of another as depending on the psychology and reason of the culript.

I think I would only find it acceptable if the guy is fucking balls insane

Pin Clock

Nice 3 year bump

Also,m the death penalty should only be used if it is the last solution to a problem possible.
if there were two guys on the moon and one of them killed the other with a rock that'd be pretty fucked up wouldn't it?

Quote from: DiscoBall;1387132I agree with Death Penalty, but only in serious cases. Think about it. People who do those hideous crimes can't go to rehab, they won't get better. And prison is just for less important crimes. Why should someone who killed people or something of the sort get free food, water and a place to stay? If they die, they will learn their lesson, even though they can't take any benefit from it anymore. Plus it'll make the criminals or the insane think twice before committing these crimes.

Stop bumping, seriously.

The whole system of crime and punishment is counterintuitive -- you fix nothing and cause more suffering, whether it be through putting the individual in prison to rot, or by just killing them all together. You are fighting fire with fire.

The only reasonable solution is that YOU as an individual take the person who committed the crime and help them to see the error of their ways -- the causes of suffering and how they are adding to it and in turn hurting not only others, but themselves as well. There should be no "system" of judging or fixing people, but rather the "good" people should fix themselves, then fix those around them, then those around them fix those around them and so on.

In this way , both "good" and "evil" benefit bringing about true good, rather than evil that is just called good.

If you can't convince me then you certainly won't convince a murderer.

How I see it:  As long as an individual poses no harm to a society, that society has no right to kill him.

We have prison and mental institutions available to remove a person's ability to damage a society. I see no reason for a death penalty on top of that.

Unfortunately on the christian society families go insane by watching the murderer once again (or at least as I am aware, heck knows how other families go by that) I don't think as fresh-and-new Billy Bob Doe can truck down the avenue saying hello to the Forrester's after killing their child 25 years ago.

I'm assuming that someone being considered for the death penalty would be serving a life sentence in prison otherwise.

Quote from: RomanClock;1387528If you can't convince me then you certainly won't convince a murderer.

The trick is that it is equally hard to convince both that they are wrong. Really though, it isn't a matter of convincing -- it is not my job, all one has to do is live like a truly good person and touch those around them who are willing to listen, and not look down on those who won't listen.

To relate it to Christianity, as I know you can well relate to it, it is all about being JUST LIKE Jesus. If you know him well, then you know how to rightly act.

>>For others who want to jump on me for talking about a Christian perspective, I am just going to make it clear to you that I am not a Christian, I just agree with the religion if practiced correctly. That is to say, being just like Jesus is undeniably a good thing.

Um, I don't know what you're saying but it sounds like you're attacking religion and has nothing to do with the death penalty, if not please clarify.

Our entire approach to the criminal justice system is a bit off-kilter anyway. It seems to be mostly a tool of moralistic revenge, not a method of actually repairing situations and ensuring safety. This is especially so in the case of "victimless crimes", most notably the consumption of illegal intoxicants. Nonviolent individuals are placed in situations where they are surrounded by violent individuals and often become violent. Prison doesn't cure crime, it escalates it, causing already traumatized people to become more damaged before letting them back out into society.

This is no solution. I agree whole-heartedly that violent individuals need to be kept from the rest of society for our safety, but if a person's not actually physically dangerous to those around him, there's no reason to lock him up. Aside from doing him wrong personally, you may very well make a monster.

That said, a change in policies on non-violent crime would likely decrease congestion in prisons and in turn decrease violent crime. Still, I don't think you should kill fluke offenders or expose them to real hardened killers, so the death penalty might be sensible with those who aren't going to get better, to prevent them from rubbing off on the rest of the population. In every case, though, I think it's important that society address the root of the behavior and not just lash out in anger. If you have any intention of helping them become less of a danger to their peers, violent people need therapy, not more violence.

AvocadoClock

Economically it doesn't make sense. It costs more to kill someone than to put them away for life. And I don't approve of it ethically either. Eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

Quote from: DiscoBall;1387132they won't get better.

Because you have no faith in them. And even if they don't get better, there's life in prison already for those extreme sentences.

QuoteAnd prison is just for less important crimes.

Because we have the death penalty for more extreme ones. Circular dependency.

QuoteWhy should someone who killed people or something of the sort get free food, water and a place to stay?

Spend a week in prison, why don't you, and then complain about how fucking nice a hotel it is.

QuoteIf they die, they will learn their lesson

No they won't because there is no lesson to learn and they will cease to exist in any form which means all you did is make sure they were criminals to their very last.

QuotePlus it'll make the criminals

You think they don't think twice before making a choice that could render the next few decades of if not the entirety of their lives meaningless and painful?

Quotethe insane think twice before committing these crimes.

You don't seem to understand the word insane.

Quote from: Zombie Lincoln;1387531We have prison and mental institutions available to remove a person's ability to damage a society. I see no reason for a death penalty on top of that.

I would go so far as to say even prison fails to hit the mark. It started off with a cute idea: put all these dysfunctional people together in a little "mini society" and let them learn how to properly act within real society. But of course, there was no way for this to work because you are asking dysfunctional people to learn from other dysfunctional people, so really all they learn is how to become better at being dysfunctional!

Meanwhile, society has shifted it's intention of prison from being a place where criminals can learn how to act to looking at it as a means of revenge. It is no longer meant to help criminals in any way, and it is built in such a way that very few actually come out better off than how they came in, and many repeatedly return.

People need to be able to look at criminals as just people -- the ferry scene in Batman demonstrates this whole subject pretty darn well.

That is just kinda what I see observing from the outside and based on what i've been told by people who have actually been in prison.

>>as for mental institutions, I just don't know enough at all about them, or the people who are placed in them to say anything, so I'm not gunna touch that one with a 10-foot pole!

RomanClock

Prisons cost too much. They should separate crimes that involve physical assault, terrorizing, arson, some cases of theft, drug dealers, rapists and murderers and then the other group like druggies, small thieves, minor vandalism, etc.

Yeah, cost is definitely a huge problem with all this as well. I personally don't want my tax money going into an ineffective system.

My beef is that they get better medical dental and food paid for by the government than the homeless on the streets, now there is something wrong with that
