Wavedashing eh? Never herd of it, but it doesnt really look like it would be that helpfull.

Me and my friend just finished playing the 1st smash bros. It took a lot of getting used to after playing melee for so long.

AdrenalineClock

The only time it's really useful seems to be with Luigi, who's slides a lot.  Otherwise, it's a lot of work to go slightly faster.

NesquikClock

Well, it is useful because you're moving as fast as when you're running and you can perform any attack while gliding.

Also I think it's only good with Lugi too, since his normal running attack sucks.

Dragonbladeclock

"Hey guess what?  No, not a new character, no no no, the game is being delayed lol."

jk.  I can wavedash but I'm not very good at it.  My main is Roy, Link, Dr. Mario, and Sheik
Horrible name amirite?

Poltergeist

Quote from: Damon Gant;818995I don't wavedash, doesn't seem like a very popular technique anyway, so it lets you run up a little bit faster.

I mean, I think snaking must've at least been a lot more intentional than wavedashing was in the programming.

Are you serious? Go on any forum with a smash bros. topic, if you say you don't wavedash you'll get your account laughed into oblivion. Anyway, wavedashing allows you to move faster, while being invunerable to most attacks, plus it's an excellent way to counter.

Anyway, have you seen the videos of Ken? He's won almost every torny he's entered, pretty much everyone considers him the best.

Yeah, ownage:

Wavedashing is the Smash Bros. equivalent of breeding pokemon for IVs. It's for those nerds that get hella fucking pro at this game for god knows what reason.

For most people, there's absolutely no reason to do half the shit these guys come up with just to be a little bit better at what's basically just a well-balanced party game.

Those matches on youtube always drive me nuts. Items off, and only boring flat stages, and 9/10 of the characters' moves being ignored because they're less viable in 1 on 1 matches. Where is the fun in that?

i agree, those matches dont even look fun to play. When I get Brawl. it will only to be to play with my mates and have some fun, not to get ridiculously good at it.

AdrenalineClock

I don't play at nearly that level but I've gotten in plenty of competitive, heated no-item matches and believe me, they're fun.  A different kind of fun, sure.

RupeeClock

I think that's part of the beauty of it, there are many ways to enjoy the game by simple party games that everyone likes to extreme skill and 1 on 1 challenge, each to their own preference I say and I like playing it as a party.

Frankly though, everyone who is absolute pro at this game seems to have a real superiority complex that pisses you off.
Knowing basic techniques like air-dodges and quick recoveries is great, but get this. Apparently you can use Capt Falcon's taunt to do something weird on edges and this classified as a technique by these people on the 64 version, WHYYYYYY, something so minimal is a technique?!

I was asking myself when someone could come up on this board and say that those 'professional' matches suck, because I couldn't agree more.

Also, while Bowser is low in the tier list because he's slow in 1 vs 1 his strength makes him very good in 4 player matches.

RupeeClock

Again supporting another point of the game in that Novices and experts (button mashers and tacticians) can play the game, some characters are much better for either kind of player.

Tiers are worthless to me as they focus solely on things like 1 on 1 matches.

NesquikClock

Actually, SSB is near-useless for your average Beat 'Em Up button masher because the controls will make their characters move senselessly around.

same. I fight almost all my matches without items, because they can completely change the output of a match.
if there were two guys on the moon and one of them killed the other with a rock that'd be pretty fucked up wouldn't it?

RupeeClock

You ever played the original smash bros? All of the stages have different item chances, I notice a lot of hearts appearing on Hyrule castle (seriously, like 5 hearts appearing during one of my online matches and it gave my opponent too much of an advantage.), along with a load of shells and bomb-ombs on Mushroom Kingdom and beam sabres on Starfox.

Healing items really can fuck you over.

Turning off ALL the items though takes the fun out of it though, otherwise the most skilled person is bound to win almost every single time.
Actual tournaments I would understand having no items, but I wish people would stop treating their living room as a pro-tourny.

I can't believe they took out Hyrule castle and Saffron city in melee.

I think Smash bros is great because it feels like a game rather than the pointless remembering in every other fighting game. Seriously, I can't see the funn in remembering to push X four times then run forward and guard and press triangle six times.

RupeeClock

I know what you mean, other fighting games just feel so damn restricted.
ESPECIALLY 3d ones like tekken.
Makes me look forward to the "more freedom in aerial combat" that they're trying to implement.

The 3 past stages in Melee were disapointing to an extreme, Kongo Jungle and Yoshi's Story were not memorable stages, Dream Land was though.
I love Hyrule castle and Saffron city, really do.
