CD Clock

I can honestly say that I've never ever seen anyone dress like that.

AlbinoClock

That's some lame cyberpunk poser bullshit. It doesn't count as cyberpunk unless you're actually wearing working devices. I want an eye patch with a screen in it and a wrist-mounted minikeyboard or just a cord that plugs directly into my brain. That's cyberpunk.

Duh, of course! how could it slip out my head?

Cyberpunk is a philosophy, not a manner of dress.

No, I'm pretty sure it's a literary genre.

...I take that back.

Agreed with entirely.

People sometimes ask me why I dress so emo, but honestly jeans and a black t-shirt is constituted as emo? Wha-

Uh, no. It's a setting involving cybernetics, oppressive corporations, and a dirty, nearly post-apocalyptic world.

Quote from: ZeitmiserZeitmesser;1262022No, I'm pretty sure it's a literary genre.

It's evolved beyond that.

Earlier cyberpunk fiction now mirrors aspects of reality, notably Snowcrash.

Influences are seen in movies and graphic art, and some really godawful techno.

New architecture is conforming to the high tech aesthetic, and society is providing the low life to populate it.

Corporations are driving towards cyber-life. Most notably, Cisco and Google.

I could go on. Cyberpunk is becoming more of a framework than a genre.

I don't care what people have decided to call cyberpunk after reading novels with a cyberpunk setting. This world is not cyberpunk in any way. Some people think they're dragons.

escalation of technology != cyberpunk

My night-elf minions at my medieval roleplaying board would disagree.

There is a difference between cyberpunk and most other areas of fiction, and that is plausability. Cyber-culture is driving engineering, it wants to be realized.

I'm not saying it's impossible that we could end up in a cyberpunk culture, but it's not the case at the moment. Also, there's a difference between high technology and cyberpunk, namely the dystopian aspects.

Agreed, but the mindset is also carrying over into reality. Piracy, moral decay, corporatocracy, Japanophilia, etc, are all commonplace in society.

Those are aspects of society that existed at the time of the creation of cyberpunk fiction that it put emphasis on. It hasn't really changed much since then, though there are definitely more pirates now.
