Seargant Major told me about this, it is a compilation of a bunch of incoming freeware programs on pretty much everything Adobe does.

The incoming product information is still not so clear but so far it is looking great, check out the product blog.

Kind of nice, hopefully it will lower Adobe's ridiculous prices.

I wonder how much longer will they be creating them bedore releasing them?
Can't wait to try some of them.

I signed up for the beta a while ago. It kind of sucks because you can't gain access to the beta versions of some programs without contributing content created by using other programs.

To tell the truth, the interfaces are kind of confusing to me - they don't work exactly the same way Photoshop or The GIMP does, which makes me just want to use The GIMP and forget Aviary even exists. Unfortunately, that means I can't obtain access to other Aviary programs I might potentially be interested in... oh well. Maybe they'll open up the beta a bit someday. :(

Edit Also, there's a news post on their site about "competing" with Adobe.
<Marlin Clock> This thread seems proof positive that divisiveness at any level is usually bad for the Clock Crew.
<PhantomCatClock> are we talking about the same clock crew

Wow, this means a lot for public education!  The state college where I work can't afford a lot of things.  My department asked for a technology grant which included a bunch of Adobe programs.  We did not get the grant.

If we had these programs, we wouldn't even care about Adobe.  And I'll bet other instututions would do the same.  Plenty of schools have already abandoned the costly course management software "Blackboard" in favor of the open-source "Moodle."

From what it sounds like I probably wouldn't ever use the image editor, but a lot of the other programs sound pretty great.

Why not? It's better than most online image editors.

Probably because most of the time, online image editors aren't necessary when you have offline ones.

Not all people have Photoshop and this is a fanstastic replacement. But I agree that if you do have a normal image editor, save yourself some time and use a more powerful offline editor.
