It's a matter of my opinion that gloss is ugly and gaudy. I would find it acceptable iff the material being drawn is a glossy thing, like pearls. But then I hate the look of pearls, too.

"Needless" is an arbitrary assessment, not to mention a pompous one -- if the artist feels it is needed to convey what they want, then how can another person say it is needless?

I don't even use gloss anymore by the way because I have grown out of it, I am just playing devils advocate. I'd even go so far as to say I agree with you to a large extent, I just feel like it is wrong to be so imposing based your reasons.

Gloss when done correctly can look rather spiffy, take this 8ball I done about 2 years ago for an example.

The gloss just needs to be blended in correctly for it to look natural. You can achieve this by using lots of gradients and using soften fill edges.

Gloss is inherently not mild. Otherwise it's not glossy. It's intended to emulate paints in the glossy extreme of mattes, high gloss being that most extreme matte, which is incredibly unrealistic when drawing anything that isn't covered in extremely glossy paint, but which mediocre art faggots find incredibly convenient for polishing their turds and making their art faggot brand e-penis grow to Lock Legion calibur.

What you used in your signature was a very well executed imitation of radiosity effects, as well as the Phong shading model, not gloss, and while I admit that it can be a little drippy at times, it is still pretty damn well acceptable.
