You have to collapse the dashboard before changing to the cabinfever skin (since it doesn't exist on the cabinfever skin), otherwise it acts as if it's still there, and makes room for it on the layout.

I began making one last month but discovered it's quite difficult to make an elegant - or at least nice to look at - design that's also very simple. I got frustrated and put it aside. But I have some free time coming up soon and I'll give it another stab.

Try your best, sure. However, if it's between looking like crap or not having one at all, I think the best thing to do would be to implement it looking like crap. The people who are going to be using it honestly don't seem like they give two shits about what it looks like.

Why not make it a contest for people who know how to design forum layouts? Have regular members take a shot at designing the best looking yet most efficient layout.

Seems like a lot, but  like Triangle's been saying, we don't even use 100% of the page width, and there's plenty of room at the top of the page If we had a simple layout.

I don't want a cool layout I just want something simple I can use at work and run on my pc while downloading or doing other things, you can set the default skin to anything fancy you want but some people just want a simple skin they can use if they don't care about fancy backgrounds and purrrrrdy colours. It would take 5 seconds to enable the default forum skin.
