Why do people hate philosophy?

philosophy is actually an incredibly broad term, with tons of diverse complexities within it.

 I agree with this. I’ve heard philosophy called “the first science,” ‘cause in its earliest form, it meant dealing with the way the world worked. If someone said, “why does this rock fall to the ground when I let go of it?” they were doing philosophy. The questions man had about the world constituted philosophy as a whole. However, over time, a lot of specific disciplines developed from this general inquiry about the worldâ€"disciplines such as math, physics, biology, etc.â€"and kind of found their own niches in terms of what they specifically look at regarding the world.
   
  I think a lot of people dislike philosophy today because of this. Since disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc. have basically been completely separated from what we now know as “philosophy” (I’ll agree that a lot of people today think of philosophy as mainly metaphysics and maybe some epistemology), it’s difficult to find practical, everyday uses for it, at least in comparison to these other disciplines. I’m a philosophy major, and a lot of the classes I take (aside from the logic classes) further emphasize this shift in how philosophy is viewed today. Most of them are history of philosophy classes, or classes exploring certain aspects of philosophy (metaphysics, epistemology, ethics) that seem irrelevant, impractical, or just like “well, that’s just common sense, why teach a class on it?” I just think many people have trouble finding the practical applications of a lot of what we call “philosophy” today, and that’s why a lot of people dislike it.

Well, i may tell, that maltese seems to be like this all the way. like from day one in the forumz. i dont know, he just seems to be quite challenging, and passionate with his right to have a philosophy discussion, yet his arrogance stops his way to have a decent conversation with any other! ofcourse i mean, for the forum. in rl, he may be quite an exellent debator, but still, he needs to lower his high profile, and better try and argue with others, in order to approach better some others view.

Maltese, I think the entire problem that everyone has with philosophy is what every single person has been repeating in this thread. It isn't the thought itself; it's the way you communicate it. You can't expect ordinary people to know abstract or even basic philosophical terminology. When you use it, it makes it seem like you're intentionally trying to look smarter, and I think it is probably rather intimidating. I really respect you, but I honestly don't see why you can't understand this. Use simple, ordinary language and take others' opinions into consideration, and they might be willing to discuss things with you. Jargon doesn't mean anything if the person you're talking to doesn't understand it.

True anti-intellectualism is really just stupid people in large groups. I don't think anyone really hates knowledge. Although it is certainly trendy to use the word in a bad way usually with the word "elite" behind it. I never really understood any of that crap. According to smarterchild the first definition of philosophy is "Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline." I can see conservatives not being so big on the first part, and more liberal folks lacking the latter. Both are entirely stupid. This also includes the initial spark of debate. Anyone who says learning, intellectualism, and scholarly activities are "elite" or something worthy of hate should probably remove themselves from the gene pool.

On another note... Roman you can't just say "Occam's razor" like it's fucking Dungeons and Dragons.

Philosophy isn't the love of anything. It is the study of general matters and problems with topics spanning from metaphysics to logic and ethics. It is too broad a subject to say that people hate it, because chances are if they think they hate it, they don't know what it is.

I think that we can agree that most of the Clock Crew members are in school, and in that school, there are always complete idiots that will never catch on and always need help. These are the people who "hate" philosophy. They don't understand it, hence they "hate" it. Its the same hate they share for math or science classes.

As for the douchebag aspect, I don't think it applies to philosophy itself as much as it does to debates regarding philosophical issues.
